10 Feral Children Raised by Actual Animals

There’s no such thing as a happy story about feral kids. Though films like The Jungle Book make life among the animals looks like carefree fun, the most famous feral humans have been left tragically scarred by their ordeal. Throughout modern history, several kids have for whatever reason been left to fend for themselves in the harsh world around us.

In each of these cases, the children learned to survive by relying on animals. They adopted the characteristics, diet, and behavior of whatever wild animal they spend the most time with. Even today, children find themselves lost among the animals for years at a time, only to be rescued almost against their will. These experiences have an indelible impact on the survivors who come out the other side. Even though they start with an animal taking pity on a poor, lost child, few of these stories have fairy tale endings.

Here is a group of children who managed to survive insurmountable odds in spite of the fact that they had no training and virtually no chance of surviving on their own. Though the real history of feral children is darker than the movies would have you believe, these stories of survival are no less astonishing.

10 Feral Children Raised by Actual Animals,

Sujit Kumar Was Locked in a Chicken Coop for Four Years

In 1977, Sujit Kumar’s mother committed suicide. Then, the six-year-old’s father was murdered. As a result, he was left in the care of his grandfather, who locked the poor boy in a chicken coop for four years. What’s worse, when he was found, he was sent to an asylum, where they tied him to the bed for the next 20 years.

When he was found in Fiji by philanthropist Elizabeth Clayton in 2004, she says that when she first encountered the boy, “he pecked at his food and would crouch down as if roosting. His fingers turn inward from scratching around in the dirt, he communicates by making a rapid clicking noise with his tongue and he seems detached from much that goes on around him.”

These days, Kumar is able to stand upright, and he’s attending school, but the damage of his previous abuse is still a huge part of his life.

John Ssebunya Survived a Civil War in a Ugandan Jungle Thanks to Some Monkeys

In the mid-1980s, as Uganda was in the throes of a violent civil war, young John Ssebunya was a mere toddler of two. One night, in a fit of rage, John’s father killed his mother, prompting the terrified child to flee into the jungle. There he stayed for the next year, surviving only thanks to the benevolence of a group of monkeys.

A few days into his feral life, Ssebunya was approached by a small family of monkeys who offered him roots, nuts, sweet potatoes, and cassava. Ssebunya also learned his behavior from the monkeys (for example, as a boy, he’d rarely meet people’s eyes). Fortunately, though, John survived and was raised by a new family. And though he’s happy where he is, John explains that he feels fortunate to have been found by the group of monkeys who would become his short-lived family.

“I am grateful, yes, I am,” he says. “Because... not because of love from them, from the monkeys. But because what they did made it possible for me to be loved by other people, by humans.”

Though Found and ‘Rehabilitated,’ Oxana Malaya Still Has More in Common with Animals

In 1986, three-year-old Ukrainian Oxana Malaya was left outside during a snowstorm by a pair of alcoholic parents. Young Oxana managed to walk into a nearby hovel where she was taken in by a pack of dogs. For some reason, her parents never actually went to retrieve their daughter, and the young girl was raised by the domestic canines for the next five years, until a neighbor reported the situation to authorities.

These days, the 33-year-old works with cows on a farm at the mental facility where she resides. Though she’s become somewhat comfortable with people, telling jokes and speaking regularly, she reportedly still favors the company of creatures to people.

The Palate Cleanser: One Argentinian Infant Was Kept Alive by Cats for Several Days

Okay, after all of that human tragedy, here’s a somewhat sweet story that likely won’t have a horrific impact on the victim. In 2008, a one-year-old from Argentina was found in the bottom of a gutter, being nurtured by a pack of eight feral cats.

According to the boy’s homeless father, the boy had gotten lost while the man was out looking for cardboard to sell for money. Missing during the coldest point of the year, the boy’s father had little hope for his son’s survival. Then, a band of cats found the infant.

Over the next several days, the cats brought the boy food, slept on and around him during the freezing nights, and protected him from the dangers surrounding him. When police finally found the kid, he was in near perfect health (and the cats were irritated about giving him up).

The Young Woman Known as Genie Was Raised by the Worst Kind of Animal

Okay, this is kind of a cheat, because the woman who was identified as Genie by the people who researched her wasn’t technically raised by animals. Technically.

When authorities in California first caught wind of Genie in 1970, it was only because her mother walked into the wrong doctor’s office and a physician noticed something fishy about the kid’s behavior. As it happens, welfare employees discovered that her father regularly kept the girl tied to a chair in a silent room from the time she was a toddler. She was beaten if she cried, spoke, or made any noise.

As a result, the young woman was unable to make any kind of noise or interaction for a large majority of her life. The time period in which she was found combined with diminishing interest in her story meant that Genie slipped into bureaucratic obscurity shortly after her initial brush with fame.

Ng Chhaidy Was Missing for Nearly 40 Years Before She Was Found

When she was just a little girl in 1974, Ng Chhaidy and her cousin Beirakhu wandered out into the jungle next to their village in India. Beirakhu was found some time later, spinning tales of a mysterious woman who lived in the woods and helped the kids survive. Though a search was mounted, neither the woman nor young Chhaidy was found… until 2012, after more than 38 years apart from her family.

In 2012, Chhaidy was found in the adoptive care of a woman living in Myanmar. She’d been found living naked in a cemetery four years earlier and had been in the woman’s home ever since. When she reunited with her mother, Chhaidy was (and is) a happy woman, though her personality is remarkably childlike. She’s still able to help her mother with chores, and she loves playing with the village kids.

Though He Never Left the City, One Russian Child Can Only Communicate with Birds

An anonymous seven-year-old Russian boy wasn't exactly abandoned by his mother, a 31-year-old Russian woman, but his life may have gone a little smoother had he been. Before he was discovered in 2008, the young man had been raised entirely as a bird.

According to Russian newspaper Pravda, the boy’s mother was infatuated with birds. She had a large collection of domestic birds and regularly fed wild birds, as well. As her son grew, she refused to speak to him or let him out of the apartment. Instead, she treated him just like one of her birds. As a result, when he was found by authorities at age seven, he was only able to communicate in bird chirps.

The boy was taken from his mother’s care and sent to live in a psychological care facility.

The Study of Victor, the Wild Boy of Aveyron, Impacted the Future of Linguistics

In 1797, 12-year-old Victor was found wandering the wilderness of France. He was captured twice over the next year, but he escaped quickly both times. In 1800, the 15-year-old emerged from the woods of his own accord.

Because schools for the deaf tended to specialize in helping people speak, the mute teenager was sent to a facility for deaf people. There, he was taken into the care of Jean Marc Gaspard Itard, who began to work with the boy. Unfortunately, Victor proved nearly incapable of learning to speak (he only ever learned two words). Itard’s studies were the first indication that the human brain has a natural cutoff in which the fundamentals of language needed to be imprinted.

Oh, also, a monk once took Victor out in the snow when the kid was bare-assed, apparently for reasons of scientific inquiry (suuuuuuuuure.) Surprisingly, though, Victor loved it, running and jumping through the snow happily.

Ivan Mishukov Escaped Rescue Three Times in Order to Be with His Pack

The mid-1990s were a pretty bleak time in Russia. The country was suffering turbulent political instability and a crippling economic depression. One of the human victims of these often generalized terms was Ivan Mishukov. In 1996, four-year-old Ivan ran away from an alcoholic father and took refuge in the city streets.

An avid animal lover, the young boy would spend his days begging for food on the Moscow streets before sharing his spoils with a pack of local dogs. In turn, the pack adopted the young boy, helping him to stave off the crushing Moscow winter, which can sometimes get colder than ten degrees below zero. For two years, Ivan lived with his pack, somehow thriving on the city’s streets. Every time authorities would come to collect him, Ivan’s pack would drive the people away. It took a bribe of steak to lure the dogs away long enough to rescue young Ivan.

Due to the fact that he was in human custody for the first four years of his life, Ivan was able to re-adapt to society with relative ease.

Living with Monkeys Was the Easiest Part of Marina Chapman’s Life

In 1959, Marina Chapman was kidnapped from her rural Colombian home and driven into the jungle. There, she was abandoned for apparently no reason. After hours of wandering and weeping, she managed to stumble upon a group of what are thought to be capuchin monkeys. Chapman followed the clan for days, learning to scavenge like they did, and surviving thanks to their help. At one point, one of the elder members of the family even helped save Chapman’s life when she got food poisoning.

Over time, Chapman began to miss human contact. Unfortunately, the first people she chose to reveal herself to sold her to a brothel. It was years before she was able to escape into the city streets by working as a domestic servant in people’s homes. Fortunately, these days Chapman is at the head of an extensive family of her own, having put the horrors of her life behind her.

To this day, Chapman says that she owes her life to the little family of monkeys that helped keep her alive.

Secrets Revealed by Google Maps
The Internet is an equally dark and entertaining place, where one can discover delights that you didn’t know existed alongside horrible things that you wish you could forget. It’s sort of like the Diagon Alley of the real world. For proof of this theory, you need only to look at the Google Maps secrets collected on this list. From a naked guy crawling out of the trunk of his car, to drug dealers getting caught in the middle of a sale, things found out by Google Maps are not only salacious, but they’ll make you wonder what you’ve been caught doing while the watchful eye of Google is upon you (and it's always upon you). To be safe, the next time you go out you should probably wear some kind of black shroud contraption, or just never go out again. That’s the only true way to avoid ending up on this list of secrets revealed by Google Maps.

Some of these secrets and things found on Google Maps are kind of fun, but a lot of them are going make you worry about what kind of people you share the Internet (and the world) with. They might even inspire you to start using Google Street View in new and inventive ways. If you’ve ever wondered if there was anything in the bottom of that old lake by your house, now you can find out! At least as long as Google’s flown one of their street view drones over it.

Secrets Revealed by Google Maps,

Smoking Husband Caught by Street View
If you're going to get caught lying to your wife, you should try to make it count. Not like Donald Ryding, who was caught smoking in his driveway by Google Street View long after he told his wife that he'd kicked the habit. Mrs. Ryding said, "I couldn't believe it - there was no denying it now we'd seen him smoking. When Street View first launched, they didn't blur out faces, but there was no need to with him - he was covered by a cloud of smoke anyway." Burn.
Google Street View Car Hits a Dog
Well, this is the worst thing ever. In 2013, while mapping a street in Chile, a Google Street View car appeared to hit a dog that was in the street. Google was contacted about the hit and run incident, but they had no comment. (Don't click that link unless you want to see a dead dog.)
Is That a Dead Body in Your Truck or Are You Just Happy to See Me?
In 2013 this image made its way onto the Internet and freaked out everybody who saw it. Why would there be a headless body in the back of a truck? Why would a woman catch some Zs at 70 mph? After a while, so much suspicion mounted that the police began looking into it.

Google Maps Sends Killer to the Wrong House
A killer who used Google Maps to plan his murder really bungled the deaths of Dennis and Merna Koula when he didn't double check the mapping app's work. In 2010, a murderer began sending death threats to the home of Steve Burgess, a man who lived next door to the two people who ended up being killed. How did this happen? His house is mislabeled as the Koula's on Google Earth.

Sunken Car with Dead Body Visible on Google Maps
A body and car that had both been missing since 2006 were found while employees at a Michigan funeral home were decorating their building for Christmas. While looking in a nearby pond they saw what looked like the roof of a car, promptly solving a nine-year-old missing persons case. It turns out that the car had been visible on Google Street View this whole time.
Teen Finds Bike Robbers on Street View
After a young boy in Holland had his bike stolen, he couldn't get the police to do anything about it. But six months later he found photo evidence of the robbery.

Murderer Determines Which House to Rob with Google Maps
Steve Hodgson, a "prolific burglar" used Google Earth in 2010 to case the home of an 85-year-old woman who he tortured, robbed, and killed. After the murder, Hodgson went on a spending spree using his victim’s bank card and persuaded his girlfriend to pawn stolen jewelry, including a wedding ring.
Drug Dealers Caught on Google Street View
Here's a helpful tip for any drug dealers who might be reading this: go inside. Also, stop dealing drugs. In 2010, some heroin dealers were caught on a street corner in NYC by Google Street View, and were then promptly busted in the easiest sting operation known to man.
Axe Murderer Prank Caught on Google Street View
Playing around with the Google Street View car can be fun, but as these mechanics from Edinburgh discovered, sometimes having too much fun can have consequences. The two goofs forgot about the pranks until the photos were uploaded to Google months later and a concerned citizen called the police. Luckily, one of the cops who "solved" the case had a friend who had his car serviced at the mechanic's shop where this took place, so everything had a happy ending.
Google Street View Is a Total Perv
Oops! While mapping Manchester, England, a Google Street View car captured a ~lady of the evening~ servicing a customer. The photos were removed by Google once they figured out what was going on, but the Internet is forever so the proof of Manchester's red-light district remains.

20 People Describe The Horrible Backstories Behind Houses Up For Sale

The next time you go house-hunting, be sure to thoroughly look into the backstory of the house you're interested in. These properties might have been inhabited by serial killers, used by members of the adult film industry, or contained the "essence" of the former (now deceased) owners. Real estate agents must, by law, disclose the truth about these potentially haunted houses, but some may not even know what happened there unless they speak to the neighbors.

These Reddit accounts detail what went down in homes before their current owners purchased them. Turn all of the lights on and remember that home isn't just where the heart is; there's plenty of horror, too.

20 People Describe The Horrible Backstories Behind Houses Up For Sale,

Former Resident Was A Child Pornographer

From youdirtynetwork:

"So two years ago my step dad was charged with some child porn offenses, not a great time, 0/10 would recommend. More to the point of this story, flash forward to this October and the police contact my sister wanting to ask some questions. As it turns out, he had little creepy cameras all over the house and had been filming her since she was in Grade 9 until she moved out! Needless to say my mother is selling the house. I feel bad for the next people who buy and possibly come across something the cops missed!"

Someone Committed Suicide In One Of The Rooms

From ControlYourPoison:

"When we were looking to buy a house we looked at one in which the father of the family committed suicide in. You could tell which room it was because it had clearly recently been sheet-rocked and painted. It didn't really bother us though and we didn't get any creepy feelings. We chose not to put an offer in because the rest of the house needed a lot of work.

And no, the realtor did not tell us that someone had committed suicide in it. I happened to know because it is very close to the house I grew up in and it's a very small town."

Old Tenants Locked Their Kids In The Closet

From JaytheFarmer:

"My parents were realtors, and also flipped houses. When I was growing up I used to help them a lot, usually by cleaning. When I was 12, I was helping with a house that was infested with roaches. I noticed the closets were smeared with shit and children's hand prints, with fingernail scratches on the insides of the doors as well. I asked my parents why this was the case. They told me the old tenants used to lock their toddlers in the closets for days."

They Dug A Basement

From _old:

"My grandma sells/rents houses in the Denver area. A few weeks ago I had to help her evict a few college bros from one of her properties. This is a cottage-style home, no second floor, no basement. These guys literally dug a hole in the wood floor and made a basement where they've been throwing trash away for the last year. Like it's a living room, complete with a tv, a couple arm chairs, and a giant hole in the ground filled with ice cream wrappers, pizza boxes, and cigarette butts."

A Lack Of Hobbies

From stuisthebest:

"My aunt is a realtor and was selling a house that a lady owned but had been renting out to her college-aged son and a few of his friends.

When they went to do the first walk through so my aunt could take pictures and such, it was apparent the lady hadn't been in the house in ages. Every single room had a tv, a chair, a box of Kleenex, and a bottle of lotion. They were literally just jacking it with each other all over the house all the time.

The lady was so embarrassed."

Two Homes With Previous Occurances

From WillSmiff:

"I photograph homes. It's normal, people die in homes. I've photographed a few homes where the reason for sale was a recent suicide in the home. I photographed a new home that the builder killed himself in the garage just before the project was complete.

The weirdest one was mostly very creepy and suspicious. I photographed a billionaire's compound where the guy had and absurd fascination with flesh. There were well over 50 heads mounted on walls from water buffalo to elephant. Five-to-10 large cats, stuffed. Chandeliers made from the feathers of rare birds. Stools made from elephant feet/legs. Paintings and abstract photos of oily skin, 'veiny' muscles of humans and animals etc etc. I looked for his kill room, but I never found it. In general I find billionaires don't behave like normal people, but this one was particularly weird."

Asked About A "Water Leak"

From tiberion:

"The lady next door to me died, and wasn't found until she was, well, more liquid than solid on her living room carpet. The family couldn't pay back taxes or something, and the house went to HUD to auction. HUD paid for some cleanup, but not to replace the carpet, only to steam clean it.

So it finally sold, and was talking to the guy who is flipping it. Before I could mention the death, he asked if the house had a water leak under the foundation, because when they ripped up the carpet and pad to put down the laminate floor, it was really dirty and got all over them and their clothes. I told him what happened and how HUD went cheap on what to fix before the auction; he got green as a pea and started puking right there on his side of the fence."

A Killer Of A Deal

From Yup4545:

"When I was looking for my last house, I went with my wife and realtor to look at several houses. We went to look at one house in particular because it didn't seem like the price they were asking for could be real: a huge house sitting on tons of land with outbuildings, going for millions under market value.

We got there, and the realtor said 'Oh, I should mention, a serial killer lived here and when he was put away cops found 11 bodies on the property.' Oh, well that'll do it."

A Porno Was Shot There

From Grandmastrgusto:

"An old friend of mine bought a nice house in a quiet neighborhood. The place is beautiful and has a really nice deck outback with a hot tub. About three weeks after closing he was cleaning out some previously owner junk in one of the closets and found an old DVD. It was a Bridget the Midget porno with a hot tub scene on the cover. His hot tub. It was epic."

A Converted Victorian Era Asylum

From Zutsky:

"Not a realtor, but I used to rent an apartment that was in a converted Victorian asylum. It was rumored to be haunted, but I never heard or saw anything whilst living there.

When I met with a leasing agent to hand the keys back at the property, and for him to run through a final inspection he asked if we had been 'happy' there. I said something to the effect of yes, but we were only moving as the landlord had it up for sale. It became clear he was after some kind of ghost story as he explained that none of his colleagues liked going to any apartments in the building because when taking photos to market one of them, the red eye detector kept triggering on his phone when no one was in frame!

The poor guy looked nervous as heck the whole time we were there."

Insane Rock Star Rumors That Are Actually True
As much as you may want to believe them, most rumors about famous celebrities are completely false. Considering all the sex, drugs, and rock and roll in rock music, it's not surprising that almost every rock star has a few rumors that surround them. But, again, most of these simply aren't true.

However, don't despair, because in the midst of the countless made-up or exaggerated tales out there, some of these rock star rumors are actually true! Hopefully, these 100%, actual, I'm-not-lying-at-all, real-life true stories about rock stars will give you your rumor fix.
Insane Rock Star Rumors That Are Actually True,

Jerry Lee Lewis Married His 13-Year-Old Cousin
Rock and roll great Jerry Lee Lewis was a pioneer of the genre, and a pioneer of the rock star rumor after word got out that he had married his 13-year-old cousin at the height of his fame. In 1958, Elvis was drafted into the military, and Lewis was poised to become the biggest star in rock music, but before embarking on a European tour, Lewis married his first cousin, Myra Gale Brown. When word got out, Lewis's fans deserted him, and it took years for him to shake off the stigma.
David Bowie and Mick Jagger Were Found Naked in Bed Together
David Bowie was one of the most sexually ambiguous musicians, so it's no surprise that there are countless rumors regarding his love life. But one that definitely seems to be true is that he and Mick Jagger were found in bed together. David Bowie's first wife Angie claims that she found the two rock icons naked in bed. However, it was much less sensational than it sounds: as she tells it, they were passed out and not doing anything sexual.
Michael Jackson Wrote Music for Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Michael Jackson might be the greatest pop star of all time, and Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most successful video game franchises of all time. But what you may not know is that Michael Jackson actually wrote music for the 1993 game Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

This rumor began with one young man who obsessively poured over MJ music and Sonic the Hedgehog background music, and discovered that they sounded way too similar to be just a coincidence. After years of existing only as an internet rumor, in January 2016, the composers for the soundtrack confirmed that the King of Pop really did write music for the Sega game.
Steven Tyler Adopted a Girl So He Could Date Her
Steven Tyler was known for having relationships with some of the most beautiful women of their day, but one of his most substantial relationships arose from much different beginnings. In 1975, Tyler somehow managed to have custody of a 14-year-old groupie signed over to him from her parents so they could live together. They were together for three years, during which time she drank, used drugs, and kept up with the wild rock star. They split when she was 18, partly due to the strain that an abortion put on their relationship
Led Zeppelin Defiled a Groupie With a Mudshark
On July 17, 1969, Led Zeppelin was staying at Seattle's famous Edgewater Inn, and from their balcony they could fish in Seattle's Puget Sound. So the story goes that after a few days of fishing, and a few days of rocking, the Zep had a raucous party at their hotel room. While there, a few bandmates stuck some of the fish that they caught into a groupie's um... sensitive areas. There are many versions of this story that differ on the particulars, but it is safe to assume that something fishy happened that night.
Rolling Stones's Bassist Bill Wyman Fell For a 13 Year Old
As a member of the Rolling Stones for 30 years, it's not surprising that bassist Bill Wyman had more than his share of relationships, but what may be surprising is that one of these relationships was with a 13-year-old. Yes, back at the height of the Rolling Stones's fame, the 48-year-old rocker was pursuing a relationship with the then 13-year-old Mandy Smith. Smith said they first slept together when she was 14, and married right after her 18th birthday.
Tupac Shakur's Friends Smoked His Ashes
While the Tupac is Alive rumors will undoubtedly live on, members of Tupac's rap group The Outlawz have stated that they smoked their fallen friend's ashes after mixing them with marijuana. It was said that the idea came from Tupac's song "Black Jesus," in which he rapped "Last wishes n****s, smoke my ashes."
Charles Manson Wrote a Song for The Beach Boys
This rumor has been bouncing around for a while, and it is in fact true. Well, it's sort of true. After Manson was released from prison in 1967, he began showing some of his songs around the LA music scene, and Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys got a hold of one and eventually recorded it, while keeping the song almost completely intact. After that, Manson started staying at Dennis's mansion, but he soon got sick of Manson's antics and kicked him out. And, well, we all know what happened after that.
Ozzy Osborne Will Apparently Bite the Head Off Anything With Wings
We've all heard the story of Ozzy Osborne biting the head off of a live bat while on stage, but that wasn't the first time that Ozzy decapitated a flying friend. Apparently, when first meeting with Columbia Records, Sharon Osborne told Ozzy that he would make an impression on the executives if he released two doves in the office. Instead of letting them go, Ozzy grabbed one and bit its head off in front of the executives. I'm sure he definitely made an impression.
Rapper Danny Brown Received Oral Sex While Performing
Certain musicians are known for pushing the envelope in regards to onstage sexuality; in 1956, "The Ed Sullivan Show" decided to only film Elvis from the waist up in order to censor his gyrating hips. In 2013, rapper Danny Brown untucked his shirt from his pants and received oral sex from a fan in the front row while performing. Apparently, he kept on singing during the act. If that's not rock and roll, I don't know what is...

People Who Killed Their Victims to Assume Their Identities
Police estimate that hundreds of thousands of dead people have their Social Security numbers and other aspects of their identities stolen every year, mostly for purposes of fraud. But a few identity thieves take their crime to the ultimate point: killing people just to steal their lives. Murdering someone AND stealing their ID is rare, but when it happens, it often is the result of a long and involved con.

Killers who became their victims include a woman who murdered her sister after pretending her house was firebombed by drug dealers; a career fraudster who sent his victim off to another country, then killed him when he came back; a convicted rapist who killed a homeless man in order to fake his own death; and a lesbian serial killer known as the most wanted woman in America.

Here are some of the stories of people who killed others to assume their identities.

People Who Killed Their Victims to Assume Their Identities,

The Husband and Wife Team Who Killed Three People for Their Identities
Julie and Dimitry Yakovlev were found guilty of a scheme wherein Dimitry murdered three people to obtain their identities, which they then used to pilfer bank accounts and open credit cards. Julie pleaded guilty to a slew of fraud charges, but wasn't a suspect in the murders. Dimitry was the main suspect in the disappearances of Michael Klein, Irina Malezhik and Viktor Alekseyev - two of whom have never been found, and the other was found dead in New Jersey.

All three had had their identities stolen after their death, netting the husband and wife over half a million dollars, which had to be forfeited. Dimitry was given 30 years in prison, while Julie pleaded guilty and got three years.

George Kalomeris, Who Killed Two People to Get Control of Their Million Dollar Estates
Kalomeris resided in multiple states, and therefore had no problem killing people in two different states and assuming their identities to get his hands on their money. The first person Kalomeris killed was Gary Wayne Thomas, a man who lived in his apartment complex and who had a million-dollar trust. The two got high together, whereby Kalomeris shot and killed Thomas, and over the next eight months, assumed the man's identity. He called Thomas's bank and told him he was moving to Maryland - and established an address there.

He blew through most of the money, the zeroed in on another man, Thomas Wayne Jones, a wealthy paraplegic. Kalomeris shot Jones in the neck, buried him, and took control of his estate, including a stash of rare gold coins. However, Jones was actually alive, and eventually able to testify against Kalomeris, who was sent to prison. While in prison, Kalomeris put out a hit on Jones, using money he was continuing to steal from Gary Wayne Thomas's estate. The inmate Kalomeris approached ratted on him, and while he was under investigation, Jones died of his injuries from the shooting. Kalomeris was sentenced to nearly 400 years in prison.

The Freeloader Who Murdered Her Sister and Bombed Her Own House
Stevie Allman became a minor celebrity in Oakland after she was rescued from her house, which had apparently been firebombed by drug dealers out to get revenge on her because of her anti-drug efforts. Money was raised to help treat her injuries, she spoke out against the arsonists, and even the state's governor got in on it, offering a reward for the capture of those who bombed Allman's house.

It sounded like good-old American heroism, except that Stevie Allman had set the fire herself, and wasn't Stevie at all, but her sister Sarah, who had murdered Stevie and stuffed her in a freezer. Sarah and Stevie lived together in the house, and while Stevie was known as an anti-drug crusader, Sarah was an unemployed freeloader who routinely stole from her sister - even forging her name to cash an inheritance check. Police speculated that Sarah killed Stevie and assumed her identity to gain access to the deed to the house, as well as Stevie's finances. Other family members noted that two women lived in the house, and when confronted, Sarah readily admitted what she did.

The Man Who Murdered a Mother and Child So His Girlfriend Could Take Her Identity
The 2010 double murder that gripped Australia, the case of the deaths of 22-year-old Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and her two-year-old daughter, took almost five years to finally unravel. Karie's bones were found in October 2010 in a forest in New South Wales, while her daughter's remains were found in a suitcase in July 2015, almost 700 miles away. Both of their identities had been exploited for fraud, theft, and to send fake messages implying Karlie was still alive.

When the infant's remains were linked to Karlie's, police went public, imploring the people of Australia for tips as to the culprits. Within a few days, they had a suspect, Karlie's former lover Daniel Holdom - whose current girlfriend was using Karlie's identity to open bank accounts and defraud credit card companies. Holdom was arrested on double murder charges.

The Evil Twin Who Tried to Become Her Good Twin
A bizarre southern California attempted murder trial involved Jeena and Sunny Han, literally characterized by police as a good twin and an evil twin. In this case, the evil twin was Jeena, who was arrested on a slew of charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, robbery, and false imprisonment. All of them stemmed from an attempt to kill her "good twin" Sunny, and assume her identity.

Jeena was apparently mad at Sunny for assisting police in a prior credit card fraud scheme that she'd been busted for. Jeena hired two guys and went over to Sunny's apartment,  planning to kill her and take her identity, including her good credit score and clean arrest record. The plot got botched when Sunny (who didn't realize that her sister was in her apartment) called the police, and Jeena made a run for it. She was eventually arrested at San Diego Airport. Jeena was found guilty and sentenced to 26 years to life in prison.

Albert Johnson Walker, Who Took a TV Repairman's Identity, Then Killed Him
Canadian con artist Albert Johnson Walker had already been part of a number of failed fraud schemes when he met TV repairman Ronald Platt. He was living in England while fleeing over a dozen charges of fraud, money laundering, and theft when he changed his name to "David Davis" and started a business with fellow expat Platt. When Platt wanted to go back to Canada, Walker claimed he needed Platt's birth certificate and ID to hold up his end of the business. After Platt left, Walker assumed his identity.

A few years later, Platt was broke and came back to England. Realizing his fraud was about to be exposed, Walker took Platt fishing, then murdered him with an anchor and dumped the body at sea. However, when the body washed up, it was wearing a Rolex registered to Platt. Walker was arrested soon after, and is serving life in prison.

The Lesbian Serial Killer Who Seduced Women and Took Their Names
A 12-year manhunt for "Chameleon Killer" Elaine Parent came to a head in 2002 in Florida, after police in two countries tracked her down. Parent was accused of stalking single women, taking them as lovers, then killing them and stealing their identities. The first killing attributed to Parent was a woman who washed up on a Florida canal having been hacked apart, but with a tattoo that police identified and tracked back to Parent, the victim's roommate. Parent had used a false ID to trick the victim into handing over her Social Security number, driver's license number, and credit card number for a "numerology analysis," then killing her.

Over the next decade plus, Parent took authorities in the US and UK (where she'd lived for a long time) on a chase involving dozens of identities, several other murders, multiple countries, and countless leads. Parent was finally tracked back to Florida, and shot herself while waiting to be arrested.

William Morse, Who Killed a Contractor, Spent His Money, and Became Him
Simple greed appeared to be the motive behind the murder of Richard Bellittieri, a contractor hired by William Morse to do some work on the duplex he was building. According to Maine prosecutors, Morse shot the man, dragged him into a nearby woods, buried him, and chopped a tree down on him. He then pilfered his finances to the tune of $175,000, and even introduced himself to people as Bellitteri.

He kept the ruse up for a year, before being pulled over for DUI with Beillitteri's ID and credit cards. Maine put him on trial for murder and identity theft, and he was found guilty. Morse will spend a minimum of 60 years in prison.

The Rapist Who Killed a Homeless Man and Stole His Identity to Fake His Own Death
Michael Henderson was already a serial sexual offender, who had served a multi-year prison sentence for child sexual abuse. After being accused again of sexually assaulting a minor, in this case, a 16-year-old relative, Henderson decided it was time to create a new life for himself. To do that, he shot and killed homeless man Gary Ali, then put Ali's body in a car with his own ID, and set it on fire.

The burned car was traced back to Henderson, who was arrested in 2011 for both the murder and the rape. It took a jury just 20 minutes to find him guilty, and he was given life in prison.

The Most Infamous Cursed Movies of All Time

A list of troubled or "cursed" movies, looking at deaths, illnesses and mysteries surrounding some of the most infamous film productions of all time. A variety of films have been released that are thought to carry with them a "curse," due to the troubles faced by the cast and crew either during or immediately following the film's production. These incidents range from the tragic (as in the accident that cost Superman star Christopher Reeve the use of his legs) to the simply unfortunate (such as Tower Heist director Brett Ratner's use of a homophobic slur costing him a gig as Oscar producer.)

What are some of the most well known movie curses? Regardless of whether you believe these creepy stories about cursed films truly represent something supernatural - or if they are simply regrettable coincidences - nevertheless the existence of so many such productions is uncanny and fascinating.

The Most Infamous Cursed Movies of All Time,

Poltergeist

How's this for a statistic: Four actors who appeared in Poltergeist films died within six  years of the first movie's release. They include:

Dominique Dunne, who played Dana in the first movie, was murdered by her former boyfriend at age 22. Julian Beck, who played Henry Kane in Poltergeist II: The Other Side, died in 1985 of stomach cancer at age 60. He had been diagnosed before he had accepted the role. Will Sampson, who played Taylor the medicine man in Poltergeist II, died as a result of post-operative kidney failure in 1987, at age 53.

Heather O'Rourke, who starred as Carol Anne Freeling in all three Poltergeist films, died in 1988 at age 12 after being misdiagnosed with Crohn's Disease. During the course of being treated for a disease she didn't have, O'Rourke became ill and suffered cardiac arrest. Her family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Kaiser Permanente Hospital, which treated her for Crohn's rather than the actual condition - a bowel obstruction - that in part led to her death. The case was settled out of court.

Rebel Without a Cause

Rebel Without a Cause introduced the world to a variety of young actors, many of whom met grim fates in the years following the film's release.

Most famously, star James Dean was killed while racing his Porsche 550 Spyder before the film’s release, at the age of 24. He became one of the most recognizable and beloved actors of his generation, despite making only three films.

Dean’s co-star, Natalie Wood, drowned amidst unusual circumstances in November 1981. She, husband Robert Wagner, and friend Christopher Walken had gone to Catalina Island for a weekend, and were staying on a yacht. It's thought Wood awoke at some point during the night and attempted to get off of the boat, causing her to slip, fall, and drown. Her body was found floating face down nearby, wearing a jacket, nightgown and socks.

A witness from another yacht later recalled hearing Wood calling for help, only to be ignored by someone else on the boat. The death was deemed an accidental drowning, but suspicions of foul play have always surrounded the case, and Wood's sister Lana has made attempts to get the LA County Sheriff's Department to reopen the investigation.

Another Rebel actor, Sal Mineo, died five years before Wood, after being stabbed to death in an alley in West Hollywood. He was 37.

Finally, in a last bizarre twist on the Rebel curse story, Beverly Hills orthopedic surgeon Troy McHenry fitted his own car with parts from the Porsche Spyder in which James Dean died. A year later, he was killed when his Porsche Spyder hit a tree.

Rosemary's Baby

Director Roman Polanski's deeply unsettling film about a pregnant woman who may be in the thrall of a Satanic cult carries with it a number of unsettling stories from behind the scenes. Most famously, one year after the movie's release, Polanski’s wife, actress Sharon Tate, was murdered by the Manson Family. She was eight months pregnant with the couple’s first child at the time.

The film's producer, William Castle, suffered painful gallstones immediately following the film's production, eventually requiring a series of treatments and surgery. Composer Krzysztof Komeda died suddenly from an accidental fall. Castle later wrote in his memoirs that it felt like  Rosemary's Baby was coming true in real life, and that the cast and crew were being stalked by witches.

Superman

Christopher Reeve played the titular hero in Superman: The Movie and three sequels. The actor was paralyzed from the neck down after being thrown from his horse in a cross country riding event in 1995, and subsequently died in 2004 due to heart failure stemming from his medical condition.

Reeve isn't the only person involved in the Superman films to face personal struggles. Margot Kidder, who played Lois Lane, suffered a bout of mental illness in 1996, and was found dazed and filthy, wandering the streets of Los Angeles. Richard Pryor, who appeared in Superman III, died of multiple sclerosis only a few years later.

Believe it or not, this franchise wasn't the only troubled Superman series. George Reeves, who played the Man of Steel in the 1950s television program Adventures of Superman,  died at the age of 45 in 1959. The official finding was suicide, but some believe he was murdered or the victim of an accidental shooting.

The Conqueror

A number of principals involved in John Wayne's The Conqueror succumbed to cancer in the years following the film's release. Director Dick Powell died of cancer less than seven years after the movie's 1956 debut. Actor Pedro Armendáriz was diagnosed with terminal cancer in the early '60s, filmed one last movie (James Bond thriller From Russia With Love) to leave his family with money, then took his own life in 1963. Actress Agnes Moorehead died of cancer a decade later. in 1974. Thereafter, both principal stars, John Wayne and Susan Hayward, were diagnosed, and died within four years of one another.

Combine this with the knowledge that above-ground atomic tests were run at Nevada's Yucca Flats - very near where the movie was shot, in Utah's Snow Canyon State Park - and it seems obvious what happened. The cast and crew were exposed to radiation while making the movie (a ridiculous take on Genghis Khan), then proceeded to die from the disease. This theory was dismissed as an urban legend, as the deaths could likely be traced to either the unhealthy lifestyles or coincidence.

The Exorcist

While there's ultimately no logical reason to assume horror movies are more likely to be cursed than any other genre, seeing The Exorcist on a list of cursed movies is kind of like finding pickles in a pickle jar.

During production, The Exorcist was beset by a slew of problems. The set for the home in which most of the movie takes place burned down. Actress Linda Blair injured her back when some rigging failed, and Ellen Burstyn was hurt so badly during a take the issue plagued her for decades after filming wrapped - the scream when possessed Reagan (Blair) throws her mother (Burstyn) to the ground, is real. Meanwhile, the son of Jason Miller, who played Father Karras, was seriously injured when hit by a motorcycle during production.

Actor Jack MacGowran (Burke Dennings) and actress Vasiliki Maliaros (Father Karras's mother) both died shortly after filming wrapped. MacGowran of the flu, Maliaros of natural causes. Linda Blair's grandfather and actor Max Von Sydow's (Father Merrin) brother died during production, and the son of Mercedes McCambridge, who voiced the demon, murdered his wife and two daughters before taking his own life after being accused of fraud in November of 1987. All told, nine people associated with the movie died violently, mysteriously, or during or immediately after filming.

Various problems plagued The Exorcist upon its release. A woman at one sceening broke her jaw and sued Warner Brothers. The case was settled out of court. The movie was banned for some time in the UK, and American evangelists believed running the film through a projector would bring about demonic possession.

The Passion of the Christ

Mel Gibson's retelling of the story of Christ's death faced numerous challenges while filming, and they weren't even related to the infamous director's run-ins with the law.

Jim Caviezel, who plays Jesus in The Passion of the Christ, suffered numerous injuries during the production, including being struck by lightning (witnesses reported seeing smoke rising from his head), dislocating his shoulder while carrying the crucifix, and having a portion of his flesh ripped off accidentally while being fake-whipped.

The film's assistant director, Jan Michelini, was also struck by lightning - twice - on set. John Debney, who wrote the score, has called the job as the most difficult assignment of his life, and claims he closely felt the presence of Satan in his studio while working on the film.

The film's release also brought with it a slew of tragedies. On the movie's opening day, actor Carl Anderson - who played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar - died following a prolonged fight with leukemia. The film's Kansas advertising sales manager, Peggy Scott, died after suffering heart failure during the film's brutal crucifixion scene.

The Wizard of Oz

Actress Judy Garland became a cinematic legend playing Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz, but her personal life proved rocky after the film, in large part due to abuses heaped on her by the studio. She suffered four divorces, a string of infamous insecurities and neurosis, financial instability, and addiction struggles before dying of an accidental overdose of barbiturates at age 47.

Problems for the Wizard cast didn't stop there. Four months after the movie was released, Frank Morgan, who played The Wizard, was involved in a serious car accident. Though he was left largely uninjured, his wife Alma suffered a crippling knee injury that would plague her for the rest of her life, and his chauffeur was killed. Morgan died in 1949, never seeing the film become a staple of television and an all-time childhood favorite.

Uncle Henry and Auntie Em met with bad luck following Oz. Charley Grapewin - who played Henry - died in 1956, just before the film debuted on television, where it became a staple. Clara Blandick, who played Auntie Em, committed suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills and putting a plastic bag over her head when she was 81 years old.

The production of Wizard was similarly troubled; a number notable accidents took place on set. Several actors playing flying monkeys accidentally broke the wires holding them up and crashed down to the set (they had a net to prevent grievous injury.) The actress playing the Wicked Witch of the West - Margaret Hamilton - was badly burned while filming a scene in which she explodes into flames. When she took time off to recover, a stand-in tried to replicate the stunt in her stead, only to be burned in the same fashion.

The Omen

The Omen is a film about a couple raising a child who may in fact be the son of the Devil. (Shades of Rosemary's Baby!) It's only natural there would be some superstitious rumblings around the production. But the making of The Omen was surrounded by genuine tragedy on all sides.

Two months before filming commenced, star Gregory Peck's son committed suicide. Later that year, when Peck was flying to London to make the movie, his plane was struck by lightening. A few weeks later, executive producer Mace Neufeld was flying to London and his plane was also struck by lightening.

Neufeld's hotel was later bombed by the IRA, as was a restaurant where a number of the cast and crew were planning to dine. A tiger handler on the site was killed in a freak accident. Another plane hired to do aerial work on the film crashed while working on another production, killing everyone on board.

Even after the film was finished, troubles and tragedies abounded. Eight months after working on the film, special effects consultant and designer John Richardson suffered injuries in a head-on car collision in Holland that killed his assistant, Liz Moore. A road sign by the crash read: Ommen, 66.6 km (Ommen is a city in the Netherlands).

Richardson was in Holland working on war film A Bridge Too Far along with a colleague from the set of The Omen, stuntman Alf Joint. While performing a standard stunt on A Bridge Too Far (jumping off of a rooftop onto a large inflatable cushion) Joint slipped awkwardly and was badly hurt. He later told friends he felt like he had been pushed.

Rumors of the curse of the The Omen have abounded for years, and director Richard Donner, Neufeld and others associated with the film eventually spoke in interviews about the superstitions. Actor Harvey Stevens - who played young Damien in the movie - and Gregory Peck both refused to speak about the curse for the remainder of their careers.

Atuk

Atuk is so cursed it never made it to screen. The screenplay, based on satirical novel The Incomparable Atuk, about an Eskimo who moves to New York City, has been kicking around Hollywood since 1971, when producer Norman Jewison bought the book rights.

Most major actors attached to the project have died. John Belushi died a few months after agreeing to star in the film. British comedian Sam Kinison signed to play the lead in 1988 and even filmed a few scenes, but the production fell apart due to disagreements between the actor and pretty much everyone else. He died not long thereafter in a car accident.

In 1994, John Candy was attached, but died of a heart attack. A few months later, Michael O’Donoghue, a friend of Candy's who, according to rumor, went over the script with the actor, died unexpectedly of a cerebral hemorrhage. Chris Farley was attached when he died of a heart attack and, according to unverified rumors, Phil Hartman was also interested in or attached to the script when murdered by his wife.

12 People Who Fell from Ridiculously High Heights, But Managed To Survive

Falling is one of humans' deepest, most primordial fears. And it's a worthy thing to be afraid of, given that the impact from any fall of significant height is likely to cause serious injuries and could even lead to death. This reality is likely the reason why people are so scared of heights, yet it's actually possible to live through even the most traumatic falls – as people who have fallen off of buildings but lived to tell the tale prove.

There are all types of situations whereby someone might accidentally plummet from a great height. They could fall from the side of a cruise ship in rough seas or have their parachute fail to open during a skydive. Whatever the case, it's perfectly clear that falling from anything high would be a truly terrifying ordeal. Just take heart from the fact that such incidents do not always equal death.

12 People Who Fell from Ridiculously High Heights, But Managed To Survive,

Bear Grylls Almost Died In An SAS Training Mission

Before he became a popular television personality and adventurer, Bear Grylls spent a short amount of time in the armed forces. During this military service, he was involved with the SAS Territorial Army and took part in a training exercise over Zambia. During a skydive, his parachute failed to inflate. Thinking he had time to fix the problem before he hit the ground, he chose not to open the reserve chute and instead fell 16,000 ft and landed on his parachute pack. Although he narrowly avoided severing his spinal cord, he did break his back, which required him to go through 12 months of 10-hour-a-day physiotherapy.

James Boole Stayed Alive During A Skydive Gone Wrong

James Boole is an incredibly experienced skydiver who completed some 2,500 jumps during his lifetime. However, all of this experience did not prevent him from falling 6,000 ft in Russia when he opened his parachute too late for it to fully inflate. He hit the ground with a tremendous amount of force, leaving a one-yard crater in the snow. Somehow, Boole was able to survive, sustaining a broken back and ribs. This allowed a miraculous recovery whereby he could walk after just a week of the accident.

Alan Magee Lived Through A Plane Crash

WWII Air Force Sergeant Alan Magee was part of a B-17 Flying Fortress crew that was hit by German fire during a mission. The airman not only found himself plummeting towards the planet’s surface in the wreckage of his plane, but he had also been hit by gunfire during the attack. Yet, miraculously, he still managed to eject himself from the aircraft. Falling through the air, Magee found that his parachute wouldn't work as it had been damaged, meaning he was in free fall when he crashed through the glass ceiling of a train station. Bizarrely, this glass ceiling actually managed to save his life, cushioning the fall enough so that he only had some minor injuries.

‘Miracle Man’ Joshua Hanson Survives Fall From City Hotel

Joshua Hanson astounded doctors when he survived a 200 ft fall from a hotel that would almost certainly have killed anyone else. The accident happened when Hanson ran from an elevator in January 2007. He lost his balance and fell through a window, plummeting from the 17th floor of the building onto an overhanging roof. From there, he fell to the ground, somehow landing on his feet. The 29-year-old suffered a myriad of serious injuries, including internal bleeding and multiple broken bones but was lucky to simply stay alive.

Juliane Koepcke Lived After Her Plane Was Struck By Lightning

Juliane Koepcke was a passenger on a flight traveling over Peru on Christmas Eve in 1971 when the plane began to experience heavy turbulence. After several minutes of passing through the storm, an engine on the wing was hit by lightning, and the aircraft plummeted towards the ground. Juliane was the only survivor out of the 91 passengers on board, and the 17-year-old landed in the jungle with a broken collar bone, one shoe, and only a few sweets for food. She spent 10 days in the Peruvian jungle before she was rescued. The leading theory for how she survived is that the heavy vegetation softened her fall while the row of seats she was strapped in acted as a makeshift glider.

Christine McKenzie Fell 11,000 Feet Onto Power Lines

August 2004 was not a good month for South African skydiver Christine McKenzie. The 23-year-old was in free-fall when her parachute failed to open. This prompted her to try her reserve chute, but this too malfunctioned and became tangled as it partially inflated. The incredibly rare occurrence meant that McKenzie hardly slowed before she smashed into a series of powerlines before hitting the ground. Those powerlines saved her life, though, absorbing most of the energy from the fall and drastically reducing her impact. Despite the fact that literally everything that could go wrong in her jump did go wrong, McKenzie managed to survive with just a broken pelvis and some bruising.

Vesna Vulovic Holds The Record For The Highest Fall Survived Without A Parachute

In January 1972, Vesna Vulovic was on a flight over what was then Czechoslovakia as a flight attendant for Jugoslavenski Aerotransport. The aircraft broke up in midair when a bomb exploded onboard, killing everybody with the exception of Vulovic. She fell an estimated 33,333 ft before landing on the ground and somehow managed to survive. She was seriously injured from the accident, however. She spent 16 months in the hospital and was in a coma for 27 days, as well as having dozens of broken bones. However, she went on to make a full recovery.

Felix Baumgartner Survived A Jump From Space

Unlike many of the entries in this article, Felix Baumgartner did not fall from a great height by accident. Instead, his plummet was a stunt performed in partnership with Red Bull in October 2012. The Austrian jumped out of a balloon at a staggering 128,100 ft and reached a maximum speed of 833.9 mph during the descent. Although the parachute deployed as planned in the last few seconds of the 10 minute drop, Felix did run into trouble twice. While heading down into the final part of Earth’s atmosphere, his visor began to fog due to a malfunction, and while he was dropping he began to tumble rather than remain in a special delta position. Fortunately, he managed to recover and was completely unharmed upon landing.

Steve Fossett’s Hot Air Balloon Was Destroyed By A Storm As He Crashed To Earth

Steve Fossett was an adventurer who made several attempts to travel around the world in a hot air balloon. In one such attempt in August 1998, he suffered a catastrophic accident as his balloon crashed into a storm front. Hail tore apart the structure and sent his small capsule tumbling towards Earth. After falling almost 30,000 ft, Fossett woke up to discover he had not only survived the ordeal but was also completely unharmed. The capsule had landed in water and protected him from injury, though, he did have to spend 10 hours at sea before he was rescued.

Teen Survived Suicide Leap From Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge has become a hugely popular location for those attempting to commit suicide. The 200+ ft fall kills 98% of all of those who jump on impact, and the icy cold waters below make it even harder to survive. But survival is possible. This is exactly what happened to a 16-year-old girl who jumped from the bridge in April 2011. Precisely how she survived is not known, but research suggests that the younger and fitter a person is the more likely they are to manage to live through the ordeal.

Celebrity Co-Stars Who Refused To Even Act In The Same Scene

Despite our desire to think that everyone in Hollywood is the best of friends, sometimes that’s just not true. In fact, there are a ton of celebrities who don't get along or simply don't have any chemistry. Some couldn't even bear to be on set at the same time because their mutual antagonism had gotten so intense.

Most of these co-stars who hated each other were able to make it through the original production, but then one was not asked back for the film’s sequel. For example, Channing Tatum may have put up with Alex Pettyfer’s “diva” antics on the set of the first Magic Mike movie. However, when it came time to shoot the sequel, Magic Mike XXL, the British actor was not offered the opportunity to reprise his role as "The Kid."

Usually, actors are professional enough to get through a production. But that doesn’t mean that there are not actors who filmed scenes separately. This may be tough to stomach for die-hard The Good Wife fans, but it just looked like Julianna Margulies and Archie Panjabi shot that long-awaited series finale reunion scene in the same location. In fact, it was Hollywood smoke and mirrors that created the illusion that the two actresses were in the same location. Sometimes, ignorance really is bliss, especially when it comes to beloved actor pairings.

Celebrity Co-Stars Who Refused To Even Act In The Same Scene,

Bill Murray, Lucy Liu, And Charlie's Angels

The feud between Bill Murray and Lucy Liu on the set of the original Charlie's Angels film is a well-told Internet tale. The story goes that Murray said something pretty darn mean to Liu while filming one of the scenes in the movie. He allegedly stopped the scene and pointed to Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu, saying in order, “I get why you’re here, and you’ve got talent... but what in the hell are you doing here. You can’t act!”

At that point, Liu allegedly got extremely upset and started throwing punches to the point where the two had to be separated. Despite that wide spread rumor, Murray has a completely different take on the story, stating that he and Liu simply had a 20-minute blowup, and their argument was blown out of proportion.

He explained: "We began rehearsing this scene and I said, 'Lucy, how can you want to say these lines? These are so crazy.'" He continues "She got furious with me because she thought it was a personal assault, but the reality is she hated these lines as much as I did. But for 15 or 20 minutes there, we went to our separate corners and threw hand-grenades and sky rockets at each other."

Murray insists that there is no bad blood between the fiery actors. But, if that's the case, then why was Murray replaced with Bernie Mac for the film's sequel? According to the Groundhog Day star, he decided not to re-sign because of a different member of the cast, not Liu, was going to be in the sequel. "That same person was going to be involved in the second one, so I wasn't going to show up again."

Julia Roberts, Nick Nolte, And I Love Trouble

It was the mid-1990s, and both Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte were at the height of their Hollywood fame. The duo joined forces in the forgettable romantic comedy I Love Trouble in 1994. However, Roberts and Nolte reportedly hated each other so much that they had to film their scenes separately and then use stand-ins in order to try and create on-screen chemistry.

Roberts told The New York Times that her co-star could be "charming and nice, [but] he's also completely disgusting." Nolte, not one to let bygones be bygones, retorted, "It's not nice to call someone 'disgusting.' But she's not a nice person. Everyone knows that."

15 years, several lead roles, and one Academy Award later, Roberts still hadn't forgotten about the bad experience of working with Nolte. In 2009, she went on the Late Show With David Letterman and told a story about an actor she worked with that was not very nice. She then did her best profanity-laced Nick Nolte imitation for Dave. "What the f*** is that? Did you not f***ing hear me? You don’t know what you’re talking about!"

Robert Downey Jr., Terrence Howard, And Iron Man

Terrence Howard played Lt. Colonel James Rhodes in the first Iron Man film. However, the Hustle & Flow actor said during a 2013 interview that Robert Downey Jr. "pushed him out" and "took his money," which prevented him from scoring a big payday for the second installment of the franchise. His part was recast with actor Don Cheadle, who also appeared in Iron Man 3.

Howard singled out Downey exclusively (not Marvel or other producers) for sabotaging his chance to return as Rhodey. "It turns out that the person that I helped become Iron Man, when it was time to […] re-up for the second one took the money that was supposed to go to me and pushed me out."

The Empire star also claimed that he originally signed a three-picture deal but his pay was drastically cut when negotiating for the franchise's sequel. "They came to me [for] the second and said, 'We will pay you one-eighth of what we contractually had for you, because we think the second one will be successful with or without you.'"

As far as an actual onset feud is concerned, there is no concrete evidence that one occurred between Howard and Downey. However, there have been claims that Howard exhibited "difficult behavior" during production. Howard has asserted that he will not work with Downey again in the future.

Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, And Magic Mike

Magic Mike was a surprise box office smash. After the sexy film wrapped, Alex Pettyfer, who played "The Kid," went on author Bret Easton Ellis's podcast and admitted that Tatum did not like him. Pettyfer took responsibility for the feud. The British actor explained that he had a previous bad reputation for being difficult to work with, and Tatum did not want to hire him for the lead role. He was talked into it by the film's director Steven Soderbergh. Pettyfer went on to explain that his team told him to be on his best behavior, so he stayed quiet onset in fear of causing any tension.

"I actually did my work and I sat in the corner and listened to music because I had been told anything I did was wrong by my reps. I was very insecure as a human being. That also gave me a bad rep because everyone was like, "Alex doesn't speak because he thinks he's better than everyone else."

Tatum felt the the In Time actor's behavior made him look like a "jerk for no reason" and a "diva." Tatum and Pettyfer were able to finish filming Magic Mike without complication. However, Pettyfer was not asked to be in the film's sequel Magic Mike XXL.

Julianna Margulies, Archie Panjabi, And The Good Wife

Both Margulies and Panjabi deny that there was ever a feud between the actresses. They were both asked several times about it, and they both denied any bad blood. But, if we look at the facts, it appears that there must have been something going on.

For several seasons, The Good Wife characters were close friends (although there was tension between Alicia and Kalinda after the former found out that the latter slept with her husband, Peter) and worked together in the same law firm. However starting in Season 4, the actresses did not appear together in a scene for the remainder of the series, which ran for seven seasons. When the characters needed to talk about business, they would call each other or go through a third party.

If that's not enough evidence of a real feud, Panjabi, who won an Emmy for her The Good Wife performance in 2010, was an extremely well-liked and integral character on the legal drama. However, she did not come back for the series final season. Additionally, it was discovered – to the extreme disappointment of The Good Wife fans – that the long-anticipated reunion between Alicia and Kalinda during the show's series finale was nothing than smoke and mirrors. The actresses filmed the scene in different locations on a green screen, and it was then edited together to make it look like they were in the same location.

The rumor is that it was Margulies, the titular "good wife" and one of the show's producers, who requested that the pair not shoot a scene together. However, even after the series ended, Margulies still vehemently denied the feud rumors:

"Right, I've heard about [the feud]. Who says that? It's totally gossip... I heard that question had been asked to Robert King. There's no story there, sorry … I actually had heard [that rumor] and I feel that it has been talked about and answered. I feel people just like to have gossip or make something into something that isn't there."

Sylvester Stallone, Richard Gere, And Lords Of Flatbush

Here's the thing about rumors: they have to start somewhere. One of the most mythic, long-standing Hollywood urban legends is the one that claims Richard Gere had to go to the hospital and have emergency surgery because of complications due to stuffing a gerbil up his behind. It's a tall tale that has lasted for decades and still has legs even today. But where did it originate?

Another rumor to the rumor is that Sylvester Stallone hated Richard Gere so much while the pair were filming the 1974 movie Lords of Flatbush that he was the one who started the scandal (Gere was ultimately fired from the production at the behest of Stallone and replaced by Perry King.) Sly denies igniting the hoax and in 2006 discussed his falling out with Gere during an interview with Ain't It Cool News:

"Yeah, the original part of Chico, which was played by Perry King, was originally supposed to be played by Richard Gere, but we never hit it off. He would strut around in his oversized motorcycle jacket like he was the baddest knight at the round table. One day, during an improv, he grabbed me (we were simulating a fight scene) and got a little carried away. I told him in a gentle fashion to lighten up, but he was completely in character and impossible to deal with. Then we were rehearsing at Coney Island and it was lunchtime, so we decided to take a break, and the only place that was warm was in the backseat of a Toyota. I was eating a hotdog and he climbs in with a half a chicken covered in mustard with grease nearly dripping out of the aluminum wrapper. I said, 'That thing is going to drip all over the place.' He said, 'Don’t worry about it.' I said, 'If it gets on my pants you’re gonna know about it.' He proceeds to bite into the chicken and a small, greasy river of mustard lands on my thigh. I elbowed him in the side of the head and basically pushed him out of the car. The director had to make a choice: one of us had to go, one of us had to stay. Richard was given his walking papers and to this day seriously dislikes me. He even thinks I’m the individual responsible for the gerbil rumor. Not true… but that’s the rumor."

Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, And The Fate Of The Furious

This is a case of art imitating life. It's no secret that, just like their characters Dominic Toretto and Luke Hobbs, Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson do not like each other in real life. Their hatred of one another is so strong that the macho men refused to appear together in the same scene during the franchise's 2017 installment, The Fate of the Furious.

Their feud makes for clumsy storytelling; instead of actually seeing Hobbs and Toretto battle onscreen, we have to hear about it. It's a big deal when Dom betrays his Furious family, and it's unfortunate the spectator doesn't see the friends turned onscreen enemies duke it out. Even during action scenes in the film, the actors do not share a single shot together.

The bad blood between the A-listers was made public last year when Johnson took to his Instagram account to berate a "candy ass" co-star, whom he didn't name but was later revealed by TMZ to be Diesel, for his "bad attitude and habitual lateness." Additionally, it appears that Johnson was not happy with some of the decisions that Diesel made as a producer of the film.

Charlie Sheen, Selma Blair, And Anger Management

After Selma Blair's sudden departure from the FX sitcom Anger Management, the rumor was that Charlie Sheen fired his onscreen love interest via text message in which he called the actress the dreaded c-word. It was reported that the co-stars had an onset feud because Blair questioned Sheen's work ethic.

However, the actor with tiger blood told Jay Leno a different story on The Tonight Show. Sheen said:

"One of our primary characters, Selma Blair, who played Kate, was written out because [the show] was not about our relationship, and the problem was too many people were still excited about the Two and a Half Men character and thought the Anger Management character was a little dull."

Blair responded to getting fired by threatening a lawsuit. The actress believed that she was canned from the show because she criticized Sheen for being a slacker. Sheen then reportedly got upset and had her fired. Sheen's claim that the show was planning to write the actress's character off, according to TMZ, may actually be true. However, that plan was going to take place over eight episodes but was sped up after Sheen heard Blair bashing him.

Alec Baldwin, Shia LaBeouf, And Orphans

Alec Baldwin penned a telling first-person article in New York Magazine in 2014. One of the items that he discussed was his feud with former Broadway co-star Shia LaBeouf. In the article, Baldwin made it clear that he was heavily involved with the canning of the Transformers star from the revival production of Lyle Kessler's play Orphans.

Baldwin wrote that LaBeouf appeared "scattered" when he showed up for rehearsal, adding, "LaBeouf seems to carry with him, to put it mildly, a jailhouse mentality wherever he goes.” Baldwin went on to write that the actor did have all of his lines memorized for rehearsal but was frustrated while waiting for his co-stars to catch up with him. According to Baldwin, LaBeouf attacked him in front of the rest of the cast and allegedly said, "If you don’t say your lines. I’m just going to keep saying my lines.”

Baldwin wrote that he requested a rehearsal break and informed the show's director Dan Sullivan that one of them had to leave the show, Baldwin offered to quit but instead the production chose to fire LaBeouf. “He was shocked,” says Baldwin. “He had that card, that card you get when you make films that make a lot of money that gives you a certain kind of entitlement. I think he was surprised that it didn’t work in the theater.” LaBeouf's character Treat was replaced by actor Ben Foster.

People Describe Terrifying Encounters With Weird Strangers,

Coworkers have serial killer encounter

"I used to work for a group home, taking care of kids with autism or developmental problems. The company had multiple group homes but none of them were within a mile of each other and they were all in the middle of farm country. Each had a driveway of about half a mile and surrounded by nothing but open countryside. The locations were chosen specifically for this so that if a client were to escape, they would have to run through a wide open field for quite some time.

One night at about 2 AM, I was working the graveyard shift with a coworker and we noticed some headlights coming down the driveway. We thought it was an administrator coming to check up on us so we started frantically running around doing our work. Then we realized the headlights hadn't moved. I stepped outside, took a few steps down the driveway and noticed a white van about a quarter of the way down the driveway. It stayed there for about seven or eight minutes then drove off.

My coworker and I were kind of baffled and came to the conclusion that the person was just lost and had to stop to look at a map.

Three days later, a serial killer was caught in our area. He was known for picking up women on the exact road our group home was on and he drove a white van."

Homeless man makes accurate prediction

"Being the manager of a chain clothing store, I sometimes help other locations out. A few weeks ago, I was asked by my boss to work a night shift at a store located in a different mall. I've never been to that mall before and figured working there would be interesting so I took the shift.

The mall closed at 10 PM and I left the store by 11:30 PM. Walking back to the parking structure was kind of creepy. The concrete structure was dimly lit. There were still several cars left in the structure, probably belonging to mall employees.

I had completely forgotten where I had parked, so there I was, aimlessly wandering the parking structure looking for my car. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw an elderly homeless man coming towards me. He asked me, 'You looking for your car?', and not wanting to be rude I responded, 'Yes.'

The homeless man nodded and beckoned for me to follow him. Not really knowing what to do, I decided to follow. We walked for about five minutes across the structure and up a flight of stairs.

Then he stopped right in front of my car and told me. 'It’s not safe to drive a car that's low on motor oil, you know,' and then proceeded to walk away.

Getting into my car I noticed that it WAS low on oil. I have no idea how he knew where my car was or how he knew it was low on oil."

Aunt takes prank too far

“When I was younger, my aunt used to say, whenever she babysat us, that if we were not good she would take us to 'Wally Booger’s' house. We called BS one day to her while we were driving. We were acting like little asses so she turned around and drove to what she thought was an abandoned house to show us where 'Wally Boogers' lived. When she pulled up in the driveway she said, 'Do you want me to drop you off here?' All of a sudden some skinny old man in just sweat pants came running out of the house screaming and waving a big knife. We started screaming (including my aunt) and we got the hell out of there. We cried for an hour and begged her to never take us there again. Years later I found out the gentleman has lived in his home for 15+ years without electricity. He died about five years ago and they found some creepy stuff in his home including bones of animals he had butchered and set up in a shrine like fashion in one of the rooms in his house.”

Stranger tells man he's going to kill his girlfriend

“A few years ago, I was visiting my girlfriend who had just moved to New York.

We had a long wonderful weekend but it came to an end. We were on the subway and it finally got to her stop. I was going to stay on the subway to head to the bus station. As my girlfriend gets up, so does a large male passenger. She gets up to the door and he stands right behind her. I wave goodbye as she steps off the train. Then he (the large, male passenger) looks at me with a demonic smile, points at my girlfriend's back, and mouths the words 'I'm going to kill her.'

I jumped up and try to get to the door but it's closed by the time I get there. I tried desperately to call the police but I can't get a signal. At the next stop, I bound through the station to the surface where I called my girlfriend. She was fine but freaked out. I ran the 14 blocks to her place and stayed with her all night rather than going home.”

When a stranger calls...

"I worked at a campground on the night shift from 12 AM to 8 AM. I would bring in my PS2 game a good portion of the night, only having to deal with one or two people on busy nights. It was just me in this little 8' x 8' shack, with nothing around but darkness. My first week there, the other third shift guy who was quitting told me about this payphone a few feet from the shack where I worked. He said it rang every night at 4:17 AM, just once. It was probably just an automated test call, he guessed. He's never answered it himself. It was the middle of summer so most nights I had the windows closed so I couldn't hear the payphone go off.

Mid-August I started leaving the windows open during the night. Sure enough, at 4:17 AM every morning, the phone would ring once. The ring even sounded creepy, like the payphone was submerged in water.

One night I got up the nerve to answer it. I set an alarm at 4:15 and would go wait at the phone until it rang. When it did, I answered it. But there was no sound. Just dead air like someone was on the other line but wasn't answering. I said hello a few times, and hung up. I did this every night for a week with the same results. I didn't think anything of it and left it alone after that for about a month. The first week of October, I decided to answer the phone once again. I set my alarm and when the time came, I answered the phone.

'Hello? Hello?'

Then I heard what sounded like someone inhaling through clenched teeth. The voice sounded rough and like he had gargled gravel.

He said my complete name. First, middle, and last. It was a voice I'd never heard. My voice caught in my throat and I hung up.

I rattled some change into the payphone and hit *69. The number had come from California but I was in Indiana."

Stranger tries to blow up family

"When I was a kid, we'd go to these beach cabins in Maryland, right by the Chesapeake. They were small and rustic with basic comforts and no amenities. There were two bedrooms and a cot in the kitchen and my siblings and I rotated on the cot.

A small tradition was that my mom and I would have a hot cup of tea before bed, in our summer jammies which was our way of relaxing while everyone else went off to read or listen to music. One night I was settling on the cot when she picked up the tea kettle to fill it. Out of the corner of my eye I see her flinch, then say in a steady voice, 'What are you doing there?' My head whipped over to the kitchenette to see her looking out the window. Then she jumped back and started screaming for my father.

My dad ran from the back bedroom and saw my mom point towards the left side of the house. He burst out the door. I was 10 years old so I ran under my parent's bed. I still remember the smell of the old wood and the feel of my teddy bear shielding me from whatever the hell was happening. I remember seeing my 14 year-old-brother, then a medium ranking karate student, following my dad out of the cabin at full-speed.

My father, a former Army Sergeant and MP with a bronze star, managed to tackle the guy that had been peeping into our kitchen window. He put him in an elbow lock face down on the ground with my brother standing over both of them while my mom ran to get the cell phone we'd bought just two weeks earlier.

While my mom called 9-1-1, I remember hearing the guy talking. He was saying things like,'The ouja board told me...' 'I want the devil to suck my brains out...' 'Satan is in cabin 10, I have to get to cabin 10... The devil wants me to kill myself' and so on. We were in Cabin 3, over half a mile from where he apparently intended to meet the devil.

My dad kept a grip on him for probably a good 15 minutes until the cops showed up. The first thing out of one of the cop’s mouth was 'Jamie, when'd they let you out?' Jamie had been released from jail just two weeks earlier for arson, and guess
where he was standing when my mom was at the sink in the kitchen? Right beside the cabin’s propane tank."

Mental patient threatens mom

“My mother works with mental patients. One night at around 9 PM, she told me she had to go to work because there was an emergency. Later, I get a phone call from her. She basically said my name and before she could finish, the phone got pulled away from her. In this high pitch, creepy voice one of the patients says, 'Devon 302,' (I assumed she heard my name mentioned by my mom), 'Devon 302? Your Mom isn't coming home tonight because I'm going to do something bad to her.' Then she hung up. I started freaking out and my mom didn’t call me back until two hours later. The woman ended up getting arrested, but quickly released since she has a mental illness. It was creepy as hell and very unnerving.”

Family possibly encounters the devil

“When my mom was about 12 years old, her family packed up the car and moved from L.A. to Chapala in Jalisco, Mexico. My grandma, my mom and grandpa were driving home late at night down a dirt road. Now typically, people are advised not to do that because of bandits and also because it's said the devil walks the road at night.

They were about halfway home when they saw a man in a white suit and hat, who looked really wealthy, walking alone down the road. He didn't look lost, just casually walking. The man appeared to be very attractive and they were tempted to stop the car and see if he needed help, but my grandma insisted they keep driving because she had such a heavy feeling of dread in her stomach.

The closer they got to the man, the more they could tell there was something off about him. He was extremely pale, so much so that his skin glowed, but he was absolutely beautiful. When he turned around to smile at them, they saw that his eyes were red.

My grandma hit the gas and they get the hell out of there. My mom said they said about 200 Hail Mary's that night and drank a ton of holy water.”

Friends have uncanny experience with beggar

“I lived in Ecuador for a few years in high school and my friend from Illinois came to visit. We took him to various tourist sites which included a number of small towns known for woodworking and hand crafted items. In one town, they had a market that sold baby chickens. My friend thought it was funny and bought one. He carried it around for a while, named it, and said it was his pet. When it came time to leave, he handed it to a beggar lady as we were getting in the car. We closed the door and drove to the next town. The road between the two towns was the ONLY road and my dad drives like a bat outta hell. We pulled up in the next town and immediately the SAME beggar woman is asking for more. We couldn't believe it was the same woman till she smiled at us and had the chick in her hand. We all freaked out. There was NO way she could have physically gotten from one town to the next faster than us, and yet... somehow she did.”

Man finds corpse in a garbage bag

“The summer after I graduated from high school I worked as a highway litter crew supervisor where I drove two younger teens around and had them pick up litter on the side of the road. One day one of the kids flagged me over to him and showed me a weird bag he'd found. The bag was a very thick, semi-translucent plastic, double bagged and tied off at the top with black electrical tape. It was down in a ditch covered with brush, so the kid and I dragged it to the side of the road for closer inspection. It was really heavy and it took two of us to get it out of the ditch. Once we got it to the roadside it became apparent that the bag was filled with a reddish-brown slush and a bunch of hard pieces of bones. It was then that I realized that this was a sack filled with a rotting corpse of some kind. I called my boss, and he told me to call the police. The police showed up pretty nonchalantly, but became visibly upset once he'd inspected the bag himself. He took down my statement and contact information then shooed us along as he called into the station for assistance. We never heard anything back from the police, and I never did find out what, or who exactly, was in the bag.”

19 Conspiracy Theories That Turned Out to Be True
While many, if not most, conspiracy theories are completely outlandish, conspiracies themselves are very real. Any group of people plotting to do something against the law (even if the law is unjust) is technically a conspiracy, and there have been many throughout history. Some of these true conspiracy theories were plots to assassinate leaders, others were plots to game the system in business. Most failed eventually, leading to the conspirators facing fines, jail time, or even death.

These real conspiracies proven true come from many different countries and different historical eras. We know all about them, how they were perpetrated and in many cases, the damage they did. Whether it's the plot to kill a leader or a billion-dollar scheme by a multinational corporation, these true conspiracies were all dragged out into the light.

From Watergate to the assassination that jump started World War I, some insane conspiracy theories weren't just theories, they turned out to be just some of the troubling true stories that mark the history of the human race. Which conspiracy theories are true? Read on to find out which ones really happened!
19 Conspiracy Theories That Turned Out to Be True,

The Black Hand Assassinates Franz Ferdinand
A secret society made up of Serbian nationals seeking to unify various Serbian enclaves, members of this group conspired to assassinate the Austrian Archduke. Their goal was to break off the southern Slavic provinces of Austria-Hungary and create a unified Slavic nation.

Six members traveled to Sarajevo to carry out the deed, having been trained and equipped by additional conspirators in the Serbian military. One of them, Serbian student Gavrilo Princip, succeeded – and his act kicked off the First World War.

The July 20th Plot
Dozens of members of the German military and civilian leadership conspired to kill Adolf Hitler by planting a bomb at his military headquarters. The plot, dramatized in the Tom Cruise film Valkyrie, failed when the bomb was accidentally moved away from Hitler at the last second.

Nearly 5,000 people, many of whom had nothing to do with the conspiracy, were executed in the aftermath.

Prohibition Alcohol Poisioning
The US Department of the Treasury, in its capacity to enforce the Volstead Act, added deadly chemicals to the industrial alcohol that was being used by bootleggers as a substitute for grain alcohol. They hoped to make a few scofflaws sick and discourage others from drinking cheap hooch.

Instead, over 1,000 people died, just in New York alone, before the practice was stopped.

Cigarettes Cause Cancer
Tobacco companies knew as early as the 1950s that smoking was directly linked to lung cancer. Even before then, in the 1920s, a few maverick researchers were publishing studies that theorized that the effects of smoking weren’t beneficial, as the tobacco manufacturers claimed.

But it took until 1998’s Master Settlement Agreement between the US Government and the leading tobacco companies for these links to be acknowledged, and restitution made to victims.

The Trusts of 19th Century America
Up until the trust-busting presidency of Theodore Roosevelt, a small group of powerful and wealthy business owners conspired to monopolize their various interests. This was done through price-fixing, bribery, intimidation, union busting, and running small business into the ground through unfair competition. An enormous amount of wealth was eventually concentrated in a few giant combinations, called trusts, which were almost as powerful as the government.

These trusts were eventually broken up through lawsuits and legislation, but many of their successor companies still corner the market today in oil, mining, manufacturing, and food production.
Lenin Returns to Russia
With the tide of World War I starting to turn against the German Empire, drastic steps needed to be taken to get Russia out of the war and move those troops to the Western Front. In early 1917, German authorities allowed exiled communist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin to cross Germany from Switzerland to Sweden in a sealed railway car. German authorities hoped that the return of the anti-war Lenin to Russia would help overthrow the government and undermine the Russian war effort.

Berlin was right, and thanks to the communist revolutionaries led by Lenin, Russia was out of the war less than a year later.
MKULTRA
The infamous MKULTRA experiment ran for 20 years starting in 1953, and involved citizens unknowingly being dosed with mind-altering LSD by CIA doctors to study effective ways to carry out mind control.

While the goal was to advance US intelligence and special operations capabilities, it failed miserably and violated every ethical code in any medical book anywhere. At one point, half a dozen unknowing subjects were given LSD for 77 days straight.

Lincoln's Assassination
The assassination of President Abraham Lincoln was not the act of a crazed lone gunman, but an organized conspiracy of four shooters to kill the president, vice-president, and Secretary of State in one massive coup.

Only John Wilkes Booth carried out his role, with the other two planned shootings resulting in Secretary of State William Seward being wounded, and Vice President Johnson being spared by the cowardice of his planned killer.
The Tuskegee Experiment
This shameful and racist conspiracy unfolded over decades, as the CDC knowingly withheld potentially lifesaving treatments from black men with syphilis under the guise of a medical experiment. Once the conspiracy became public, hearings were held and a $10 million settlement was reached for its victims – along with lifetime medical care for their families and no-cost burials.
The GM Trolley Car Conspiracy
The so-called “General Motors streetcar conspiracy” involved a pair of transportation companies buying up and dismantling electric trolley car lines in dozens of American cities. These two companies, which later merged into one trust, were heavily financed by car and truck producers, tire manufacturers, oil companies, and the monolithic Standard Oil.

While the government also had a role in destroying the burgeoning electric train industry, as well as the deep debt the trolley companies were in, it’s clear that there was some kind of conspiracy to knock out GM’s competition and monopolize the transportation industry.

Terrifying Grindr Horror Stories
The proliferation of phone-based dating apps has not only completely changed the way we date, but it’s changed the way that murderers and rapists find victims. As much as everyone would like to believe that dating app murder is just something that people talk about to keep others from hooking up with strangers, it’s very real and happens every day. Read on to see more terrifying Grindr horror stories.

Over the span of three months, Stephen Port, the Grindr serial killer, murdered four victims after meeting them on the gay dating app. And as much as people want to believe that this was an isolated incident, it’s barely the tip of the iceberg. Grindr crimes are some of the most horrific acts that have been committed in recent history. Not only because of the trust that’s betrayed between closeted men, but also because of the young age of some of the victims.

It says something about the world we live in when the general populous is hardly surprised when they hear about crimes being committed via a gay dating app. Grindr murder has almost become a cliché in the few short years that the app has been available, and it’s unfortunate that two people meeting on an app designed specifically for illicit meet ups can’t simply do what they wanted to do because the black cloud of Grindr death is hanging over them.

Keep scrolling if you’re prepared to read some horrifying stories of crime related to the gay dating app Grindr.

Missing Cleveland Women Saved from Kidnapper by Neighbor
Commonly referred to as the Cleveland Abductions, the story of serial kidnapper Ariel Castro broke headlines in 2013. For nearly eleven years, Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Georgina DeJesus were imprisoned by Castro, who repeatedly beat and raped them. Berry even bore Castro's child. Because the women were considered runaways by police, their cases were never thoroughly investigated.

It wasn't until 2013, when Castro's neighbor Charles Ramsey heard Knight, Berry and DeJesus crying for help inside the house, that officials realized they were in fact NOT runaways. With the help of other neighbors, Ramsey broke down the cellar door and freed the women inside. Castro was sentenced to life in prison, but shortly thereafter committed suicide by hanging himself with his bedsheets.
Elizabeth Smart Saved from Kidnapper by Her Little Sister
One of the most high-profile child abductions cases in modern times, Elizabeth Smart's kidnapping was talked-about all across America. Brian David Mitchell, who had gone by "Emmanuel" to the Smart family, abducted Smart while she slept in bed next to her younger sister, Mary Katherine, who pretended to sleep so that the intruder would not harm them. Only 14 years old, Smart was taken from her home for 9 months.

It wasn't until then that Mary Katherine realized the man who had entered their bedroom was in fact "Emmanuel." When police released a sketch of the handyman, which aired on Larry King Live and America's Most Wanted, Mitchell's family recognized his likeness and provided the police with additional photos. While walking on the street, disguised in a wig and veil, someone recognized Mitchell and his accomplice, Wanda Ileen Barzee. The police were notified and Smart finally reunited with her family. Today, Smart is involved with activism and journalism geared towards ending human trafficking.

Steven Stayner Escapes a Child Molester
After being approached by Kenneth Parnell and Ervin Murphy, seven-year-old Steven Stayner was kidnapped and taken to a remote cabin. Parnell molested Stayner and convinced him that his parents had given him up because they had too many children to take care of.

Parnell renamed Stayner Dennis Parnell, and proceeded to enroll him in various schools. Stayner had the opportunity to come and go as he pleased, and many acquaintances had no clue that he was ever abducted by Parnell. When Stayner reached puberty, Parnell organized another kidnapping of a boy named Timothy White. Fearing White would fall to the same pattern of abuse he experienced, Stayner orchestrated their escape. After being taken into police custody, Stayner and White were reunited with their families. Stayner had been in captivity for eight years.

Stayner's story was developed into a TV movie, I Know My First Name Is Steven.

Philip Sessagero Fakes His Own Death to Rebuild His Military Career
Philip Sessagero always aspired to join the SAS of the British military. He applied multiple times, but failed to make the cut. In 1993 ,while in Croatia, Sessagero faked his own death, allowing many to believe he perished in a car bomb attack. He adopted the name Tom Carew, and rebuilt his reputation as a "Special Forces" member. He even wrote a book about his experiences in the service called "Jihad! The Secret War in Afghanistan," which received critical praise.

But in 2001, a BBC program revealed "Carew's" identity. Seven years after this exposure, Sessagero was found dead in his garage. Although examiners determined the cause of the death to be suicide via carbon monoxide poisoning, his daughter believed he could have been murdered, as he "made enemies easily."

After contacting investigators and law enforcement, Carter learned that his mother had run away with him when he was a baby. His father never located them because his mother changed their names. From there, his mother was checked into psychiatric care and Carter became a ward of the state. His mother eventually disappeared, yet again, but this time did not come back. Carter was adopted by new parents at age 4. After his discovery, Carter reached out to his biological family, ending a lifetime of mystery.

The latest subject of the hit podcast Serial, Bowe Bergdahl's disappearance and subsequent capture by the Taliban garnered national attention and debate. In 2009, Bergdahl, having expressed frustrations with American nationalistic attitudes within the army, and disappointment in the U.S. intervention in the Middle East, walked away from his platoon.

He was eventually held as a prisoner of war by the Taliban, though his capture has become a point of contention, since Bergdahl initially claimed he fell behind on a patrol. The Taliban stated that they found him stumbling drunk, and U.S. forces reiterated that Bergdahl willingly left post. Gabriel Nagy Loses His Memory and Disappears
After losing his memory in a car accident, Gabriel Nagy, confused and disoriented, wandered off without saying a word to anyone. When Nagy didn't return home that evening, his family began to panic. Police found his vehicle in flames on the side of the road. Two weeks after his disappearance, Nagy's credit card showed a charge for some camping supplies, but this transaction did not lead to his discovery.

When a police officer located Nagy's name registered under Medicare, he sought him out. For the past twenty years, Nagy had been suffering severe amnesia working odd jobs. He had effectively started over from scratch. But after reuniting with his family, many of his memories came flooding back. Scarring on the back of his head correlated to the condition of his car accident, and medical examiners believe it caused a state of Dissociative Fugue, which can cause people to wander off.

The Craziest Ancient Rome Sex Scandals

If the Ancient Romans knew how to do anything, it was party. When they weren't busy inventing the aqueduct, concrete, or the basis for the modern calendar, they were discovering new and exciting ways to have fun, sexy times. Sure, every emperor, senator, and nobleman under the sun promoted family values... but when that sun set ancient Rome had the kind of sex that would make the cast of Game of Thrones blush.

While the Romans probably weren't the first in history to push the sexual envelope, they were some of the first to keep records. Regular talk of affairs, orgies, incest, and sexual contests spun around the rumor mill for centuries. Of course, the Romans weren't above tabloid-level journalism. It's no coincidence that the most perverted rumors were about the most hated emperors... but what's a scandal without some exaggeration?

It wasn't all fun and games, though. Since most of these Roman sex scandals happened to the emperors, that meant most of them ended in either bloody political coups or executions. After all... it's good to be the king as long as people let you stay in power.

So, as crazy as you think Donald Trump and Washington scandals seem... some of the ancient Rome sex scandals on this list may make you appreciate just how far politicians have come over the last two thousand years.

The Craziest Ancient Rome Sex Scandals,

Nero Dressed Up as Animals for His Sexcapades
Nero may have had a weird childhood, but that still doesn't explain this one. He liked to play a game where he dressed in animal skins, was let loose from a cage, and went to town on people who were tied up.
Caligula Went to a Wedding and Left with the Bride
So, poor Gaius Piso is getting married. When Caligula shows up to the banquet, Gaius tells the emperor not to touch his wife. So, naturally, Caligula steals her, marries her, then banishes her to an island where she was forbidden to have sex ever again. Moral of the story? Don't tell Caligula he can't do something.
Caligula Slept With Guests' Wives And Then Bragged About How They'd Gotten Down
Because his Friday nights just didn't have enough debauchery in them, Caligula had married couples over for dinner parties. If a certain wife struck his fancy, he'd take them back to his bed chambers only to return later and tell their husbands everything that went down. If that wasn't enough for him, he'd file a bill of divorce for the unhappy couple, just because he could.
An Empress Had a Sex-Off with a Famous Prostitute (And Won)
Valeria Messalina, the third wife of Emperor Claudius and mother of his son, was an epic nymphomaniac. Just for fun, she bet the best Roman hooker in the business that she could sleep with more men in one day than said lady of the night. Messalina came out on top, bedding 25 men.
Caligula Pimped Out His Sisters
When Caligula wasn't actually getting down with his siblings, he often prostituted them off to his friends. This came in handy when he was later putting this same friends on trial. He kept records of all the adultery and made them public to create instant scandals whenever he needed them.
Caligula Really Loved Incest
Although it's been said he had incest with all his sisters, Caligula's favorite was Drusilla. Apparently their grandmother caught them in bed together when they were still minors. Later in life, he took Drusilla from her husband. When she died, Caligula declared an entire season of public mourning.

When you're a sex maniac and can do whatever you want it's really easy to get bored. That's why Nero turned an innocent boy into a eunuch and tied the knot. There was an official ceremony and even a romantic honeymoon in Greece.
Cleopatra Had a Love Child with Caesar and Paraded It Around Rome
Julius Caesar not only started the reign of Roman emperors, he was one of their finest playboys. Despite his marriage to Calpurnia, he took many mistresses including the famous Cleopatra. When Caesar invited her to Rome, Cleopatra brought their baby and showed him off to everyone... including to Calpurnia.

So what's a player to do? He gave the kid his name and drafted up a law saying he could marry as many women as he wanted.

Scary Stories of People Who Were Buried Alive,

Shakereh Khaleeli
In 1991, Shakereh Khaleeli - the wealthy daughter of one of India's more preeminent families, went missing. In May 1994, her skeletal remains were discovered by police in the courtyard of her own home. In an awful turn of events, her second husband had drugged her in her sleep, placed her on a mattress in a "coffin like box," and covered it with another mattress. She died unconscious, confined to a constricted space, and buried by the man whom she trusted implicitly. When Shakereh's skeletal remains were recovered and the mattress was removed, one of her hands was found clutching the mattress which lay below her. The side of the box was scratched with her nails, perhaps in an attempt to get out, probably suffocating in the last pangs of breath.

Stephen Small
In 1987, an Illinois publishing and media heir named Stephen Small was kidnapped and buried alive in a makeshift wooden box near the town of Kankakee. His assailants, a 30-year-old man named Danny Edwards and his 26-year-old girlfriend, Nancy Rish, crafted a plan to abduct him and keep him immobile underground while asking for a $1 million ransom from his surviving family members. His kidnappers were able to provide the 39-year-old Mr. Small with minimal air, water, and light inside his homemade coffin via tubes, but he was left buried three feet under a sandy area and he suffocated after his breathing tube failed.
Man Buries Himself For Good Luck, Dies On Accident
Around 2010, an odd Internet craze began in Russia that found bloggers burying themselves alive. Some people thought it would bring them luck, others just hoped they would get likes.

The man in this story believed that burying himself alive for 24 hours would make him lucky for the rest of his life. With some help from a friend, he dug a grave outside the city of Blagoveshchensk, inserted a makeshift coffin complete with air piping, a single bottle of water, and a cell phone. Once the man got inside the casket, his friend covered him with nearly a foot of dirt and left. The man called his friend just once to say he was fine, but when the friend returned to relieve him in the morning, he was dead. It seems that an overnight rain might have blocked the air pipes and left the man to suffocate in his own casket.
Octavia Smith Hatcher
In the late 1800s, the city of Pikeville, KY was shaken with an unknown disease, and the most tragic case of all was that of Octavia Smith Hatcher. After her infant son passed away in January 1891, Octavia went into a bedridden depression where she gradually became very ill and was soon pronounced dead. In the 19th century, embalming wasn't the fad that it is today and, needless to say, when the rest of the sick townsfolk started to fall into comas and WAKE UP, Ocatavia's hubby freaked out and dug her up only to discover that he was too late. Octavia was reburied and her husband erected a lifelike monument over her grave site. The monument still stands today.
Essie Dunbar
In 1915, a 30-year-old South Carolinian named Essie Dunbar suffered a fatal attack of epilepsy - or so everyone thought. After declaring her dead, doctors placed Dunbar’s body in a coffin and scheduled her funeral for the next day so that her sister, who lived out of town, would still be able to pay her respects. But Dunbar's sister didn't travel fast enough; she arrived only to see the last clods of dirt thrown atop the grave. This didn’t sit well with Dunbar’s sister, who wanted to see Essie one last time. She ordered that the body be removed. When the coffin lid was opened, Essie sat up and smiled at all around her. She lived for another 47 years. No one gave Essie's sister guff about running late ever again.
Brazilian Man Crawls Out Of His Own Grave
For a brief moment, a woman visiting a family tomb in Brazil thought she was witnessing patient zero in a real life version of Night of the Living Dead when she witnessed a body emerging from a grave, waving its arms. After finally convincing the authorities to come to the cemetery to either rescue the man or start making headshots, police rescued the man who they believe to be a former city hall worker, who was involved in a fight in another part of the city, where he was badly beaten by attackers until he passed out and was taken to the cemetery to be buried alive.
Neysi Perez
In 2015, a 16-year-old Honduran girl named Neysi Perez was mistakenly buried alive. Her family reportedly heard screaming coming from inside her coffin, though when they opened it, she was dead.

According to relatives, her body was still warm and she had bruises on her fingertips. As well, the glass viewing pane on her coffin had been smashed. Doctors believe she had suffered a severe panic attack, which temporarily stopped her heart, resulting in the initial pronouncement of her death.

Mrs. Boger
In 1893 a woman named Mrs. Boger suddenly died of unknown causes. Doctors confirmed her death, and she was promptly buried. The end. JK! This ends horribly.

A friend of Mrs. Boger's told her husband, Charles, that his wife had suffered from hysteria before he had met her, and it was possible that she hadn’t actually been dead. So Mr. Boger dug up his wife and found Mrs. Boger’s body turned over. Her shroud and robes were shredded to pieces and the glass of her coffin lid was broken all over her body. Her skin was bloodied and scratched, while her fingers were missing entirely. It was presumed that she chewed them off while attempting to escape.

12 Disturbing Stories Of Dead Bodies Left To Decompose On Top Of Mount Everest

Mount Everest serves not only as a testament to the majesty of nature's beauty, but as an alluring siren song calling to the heart of every adventurer. Despite the risks, thousands swarm to Nepal every year in an effort to conquer the tallest point on Earth. Many of them never leave.

Over 250 bodies remain on Everest, giving it claim to the title of the world's largest open-air graveyard. While most deaths occur due to avalanches, falls, and exposure to the harsh climate, the area known as the “Death Zone” holds a terribly high body count and comes with its own unique set of problems.

The Death Zone is commonly known as the area above 26,000 feet. When the human body enters this altitude, it slowly starts to die. Then it becomes a race against the clock for climbers to make it from this mark to the peak and back again before their body fails them. Since oxygen at this level is only a third of what it is at sea level, climbers may find themselves sluggish, disoriented, and fatigued. The pressure makes weight feel ten times heavier and causes extreme distress on organs. Because of these severe effects, climbers usually only have a window of 48 hours inside the Death Zone and are strongly urged to use supplemental oxygen at all times.

If someone dies on Everest, it's almost impossible to retrieve their body, especially in the Death Zone. Due to unbearable weather conditions, severe lack of oxygen, pressure on dead weight, and the fact that many bodies are completely frozen onto the mountain face, most corpses are left exactly as they fall. Attempts are sometimes made to retrieve the body of a loved one, but those expeditions can cost upward of $25,000 and are extremely dangerous for the retrieval team.

Overall, standard protocol is to simply let these figures, frozen in the final moments of death, become a permanent addition to the rocky terrain. It would make sense that the mountain's nickname is EVER REST.

12 Disturbing Stories Of Dead Bodies Left To Decompose On Top Of Mount Everest,

A Real-Life Indiana Jones Was Finally Found After 75 Years But His Final Days Are Still A Mystery

“Because it's there.”

With those three words to describe attempting the insurmountable, George Mallory not only cemented his own Everest fame but an entire Western mentality for future generations.

George Mallory was one of the most famous expert climbers of the early 20th century. He was part of the first three British expeditions to the summit and has the morbid distinction of being the oldest known corpse on Mount Everest. A corpse that was missing for over 75 years.

During his third attempt in 1924, Mallory and teammate Sandy Irvine made a push towards the top and were never seen again. Not only was their cause of death a mystery but, for over half a century, no one was certain if Mallory had actually reached the top or not. That would change history as we know it and make him the first known summit.

An investigative expedition was launched in 1999 to find the duo and shed light on the last hours of one of the world's most famous adventurers. The team found Mallory's sun-bleached and mummified body on a low face on the north side of the mountain. Due to severe rope jerk injuries on his torso, the theory is that he was still tethered to Irvine when one of them fell off the mountain and pulled the other man with him.

There was also a golf-ball size puncture wound in his forehead that is thought to be the fatal blow. The team was led to believe that as Mallory slid down the rock face he tried in desperation to slow his descent.  He must have caught on a tilted slab and bounced off the rock, causing it to smash straight into his head.

The mystery still remains to this day if Mallory and Irvine actually summitted. Teams are still searching for a photograph that Mallory was planning on leaving on the peak and a camera that Irvine had brought with them.  Experts for Kodak have confirmed that if found and handled properly, the film could still be developed.

Irvine's body is still missing and, with him, the possible proof of the first ever Everest summit.

David Sharp's Death Outraged The World And Called The “Code Of The Mountain” Into Question

In 2006, an experienced climber froze to death near the summit of Mt. Everest. With nearly one out of every ten climbers perishing atop the mountain on average, frozen corpses have become almost run-of-the-mill.  Yet it was the death of David Sharp that nearly tore the entire climbing community apart.

British mountaineer David Sharp made his third trek to the top of Everest without the aid of oxygen, radios, Sherpas, or teammates. His first two attempts were aborted due to perilous conditions, including ravaging frostbite that took several of his toes. He successfully summitted Everest on the third try and, during his descent, stopped to rest inside Green Boots's cave, mere feet from Green Boots himself. Being disoriented and suffering exhaustion, Sharp drew his legs to his chest, rested his head upon his knees, and never woke up.

However, David Sharp did not perish right away. Over 40 different climbers passed him on the mountain and noted he was still alive but in distress. Outrage poured from around the world at the knowledge that Sharp was left moaning and murmuring to climbers who refused to abandon their quest to the top in order to help him.

Sir Edmund Hillary, who was the first person to ever successfully summit Mount Everest, spoke out against Mark Inglis and his team for allegedly seeing Sharp's distress and continuing on towards the top.

“The whole attitude toward climbing Mount Everest has become rather horrifying,” Hillary said. “A human life is far more important than just getting to the top of a mountain.”

The unwritten code among climbers is to abandon their quests in order to help others in peril. On Everest, many believe that the standard code does not apply due to the difficulties involved in climbing the tallest mountain on earth. Many argue that it's every man for himself and that Everest has become a moral “gray area." This modern mentality has pushed the climbing world into civil war, with Sharp's death only further highlighting the issue.

Inglis and his team attest that Sharp was completely frostbitten, incoherent, and beyond saving when they found him. Claims have been made that many did try to help him but seeing he was too far gone, left him and continued their journey. Others stated that an immobile Sharp was mistaken for Green Boots and overlooked. Many cry out that Sharp was left on purpose, becoming just another victim of climber greed and summit fever.

The sad truth is that it's too hard to save yourself on Everest, let alone rescue others.

The First Shredder on Everest May Still Be Boarding Down Its Face

In 2001, French snowboarder Marco Siffredi became the first person to successfully snowboard down Mount Everest using the North Col passage. Siffredi, who had come from a long line of mountaineers, was disappointed that he was unable to complete his actual goal of boarding down Hornbein Couloir, which he considered to be the true face of Mount Everest.

Siffredi returned in 2002 at a time of year when the Hornbein would have amassed more snow in an attempt to ride down the steepest slope on all of Everest. He reached the summit in a grueling 12 hours with the aid of his Sherpa friend, Phurba Tashi. Upon reaching the top, Phurba was excited but Siffredi did not share his outlook.

“Tired. Tired. Too much snow. Too much climbing,” Siffredi responded.

Being so late in the day with clouds beginning to fill in, the Sherpas urged Siffredi not to make the descent but he refused to pass up a chance to conquer the Holy Grail of snowboarding. That was the last time Marco Siffredi was seen alive.

As the Sherpas were packing up Camp III, they noticed a figure rise and then slide down the mountain along the North Col. This was strange because Siffredi would have been nowhere near the North Col passage and he was the only climber on Everest at the time of year. When the Sherpas investigated the area where they had seen the figure, there were no snowboarding tracks anywhere.

Marco Siffredi is forever shredding the Hornbein with the wind at his back and a smile on his face.

The Most Famous Corpse On Everest Is Used As A Marker To Gauge Distance To The Summit

Climbers taking the North Col route to Everest's elusive summit inevitably end up passing the mountains most infamous landmark, “Green Boots.” While it sounds like a unique protrusion or hidden crevice on Everest's face, Green Boots is actually the frozen body of a fallen climber that earned his nickname because of the brightly colored hiking boots that he was wearing when he died.

While Green Boots's identity has always been hotly contested, he is widely believed to be Indian climber Tsewang Paljor. Paljor was part of a high-class Indian expedition to summit Everest that yielded only one survivor, Harbhajan Singh. Singh recalled that the expedition was marred by mistakes and he had urged the other three men to abandon their quest due to inclement weather heading in.

Singh suspects his men succumbed to “summit fever." Summit fever is a term used when climbers abandon thoughts of safety, and often their own morals, because they are close to reaching the summit and become blinded by the drive to cross the finish line over all else.

“Don't be overconfident,” Singh insisted. “Listen to me. Please come down. The sun is going to set.”

And while the men continued on and eventually did end up reaching the summit, they encountered the terrible blizzard of 1996 on the trek back down. With zero visibility in a fury of wind and snow, Paljor and his two comrades were lost to the brutality of the mountain.

Over time, Paljor simply became known as "Green Boots" and has become a permanent fixture on the North Col passage. For the past two decades, climbers have used Green Boots as a macabre trail marker to gauge how far they had left to go on their own race to the summit.

As of 2014, Green Boots was finally dropped to a lower location over the side of the mountain, where he joined the bodies of other fallen climbers that have been cleared off of the main route.

The Final Hours Of “Sleeping Beauty” Were No Fairy Tale As She Begged For Her Life

Francys Arsentiev and her husband Sergei were avid climbers who sought to conquer Everest in 1998. Francys had a goal to become the first American woman to summit Everest without the use of supplemental oxygen. After two aborted attempts, she finally succeeded but was never able to celebrate her achievement.

Due to their lack of supplemental oxygen, the couple moved slowly and were not able to summit until very late in the day on May 22nd, which forced them to spend another night in the Death Zone. The couple became separated during this final evening and Sergei made his way down to Camp IV, assuming that his wife had done the same. Upon discovering her absence, Sergei raced back to the top with oxygen and medicine in hopes of rescuing his wife.

While accounts vary, on May 23rd, a Uzbek team found Francys half-alive and unable to move on her own. They carried her down as far as they could until their own oxygen ran out and they had to leave Francys and descend to camp. Along the way they passed Sergei on his way up to her. He was never seen alive again.

It was Sleeping Beauty's haunting final hour that cemented her legend. On May 24th, climbers Ian Woodall and Cathy O'Dowd saw a body raggedly jerking in the shadows of the First Step, one of three steps on the northeast ridge. Francys was severely oxygen deprived, frostbitten, and still attached to her climbing line. She kept murmuring, “Don't leave me here. Don't leave me here to die.” The team abandoned their attempt to summit and spent over an hour trying to save her.

Between the perilous location, Francys slipping into unconsciousness, and their own oxygen running out, the team made the painful decision to leave her and return to camp. For nine years, climbers scaled around the frozen beauty who had become a part of Everest's landscape.

In 2007, Woodall returned to the mountain and dropped Sleeping Beauty to a lower face where she can slumber for eternity, no longer a summit marker for other climbers.

This British Pilot Was Determined To Climb Everest With Only The Lord's Prayer

The most bewildering story of death on Mt. Everest is that of British soldier, pilot, mystic, and mountaineer Maurice Wilson, in 1934. Wilson was a fierce proponent of using one's faith to solve the world's problems and was inspired by George Mallory's summit expedition the previous decade. Wilson believed that by using prayer and his faith alone, he would succeed where Mallory had failed.

Wilson's plan was to fly a plane to the upper slopes of Everest and then hike up to the summit. This plan was abandoned when authorities refused to allow him to fly near Everest.  Despite being a poor pilot and having used only minor hikes around the foothills near his home for his mountaineering preparations, Wilson flew into India and approached from the Rombuk Glacier. Having no climbing equipment, he found his attempts at scaling the ice walls near impossible. His inexperience as a mountaineer showed when he stumbled upon crampons (standard equipment for ice climbing) at an abandoned camp and left them behind.

Constantly losing his bearings and having to retrace his steps in horrid weather, Wilson finally retreated back to the Rombuk monastery with a twisted ankle, snow-blind and suffering from exhaustion. After several more treks marred by bad weather, no climbing equipment, and his lack of experience within a mountain environment, Sherpas Tewand and Rinzing urged him to return to camp. When Wilson did not return from his last attempt, they left the mountain and reported his death.

Maurice Wilson was found in 1935, covered in snow, surrounded by pieces of his wind-blown tent. Many of the details of Wilson's expedition come from his diary that was found in a rucksack near his corpse.

A Mass of Bodies Has Created An Unintentional Palette Of Explosive Colors

Along the Northeast Ridge Route near Everest's summit lies “Rainbow Valley." While the name may suggest happiness and hope, Rainbow Valley is essentially a mass pit of dead bodies. This macabre scene got its name from all of the vibrantly colored jackets and climbing gear that are still attached to the corpses strewn on that section of the mountain.

Climbers along this route can not help but notice this blatantly visible spectrum of color as they take this particular passage. Throughout the years, climbers have been known to push bodies over the mountainside into Rainbow Valley or cut the ropes of mummified corpses so that the way is less hazardous for those embarking on the trail.

According to Nepalese law, Everest is sacred and any bodies are to be removed immediately. However, the dilemma lies in the fact that since it is nearly impossible to retrieve bodies from the Death Zone, the bodies must stay where they are, and Rainbow Valley will only continue to accrue more hues for its palette.

A Japanese Woman Mastered The Seven Summits Only To Die On Everest

One of the darkest times on Mount Everest is considered to be the Spring 1996. The blizzard that roiled over the mountain left devastation in its wake and took the lives of many skilled climbers. It was one of the most infamous disasters in the region, and many have heard tales of the tortured final hours of Rob Hall's expedition team.

Yasuko Namba was a skilled mountaineer who was on Everest to complete the ultimate challenge of conquering the Seven Summits. The Japanese climber had just reached the top and secured the title as well as becoming the oldest woman, at that time, to have summitted. As the 47-year-old was embarking upon her descent, the blizzard of '96 struck the face.

Namba; her fellow climber, Beck Weathers; and several guides became trapped on South Col. The whiteout conditions were so bad that no one in the party was sure where camp was. Namba and Weathers became so weak that they were being completely supported by guides. Namba weighed barely 98 pounds and her small body mass led to her being more susceptible to hypothermia and the harsh conditions.

Shortly after, help came up from Camp IV and started evacuating the trapped climbers. Another guide assumed Namba was dead and left her and Weathers behind as lost causes. A search party sent out the following day discovered Namba and Weathers in horrible condition and were certain they wouldn't make it to base camp. After being abandoned twice over a span of 14 hours, Weathers crawled into Camp IV on his own.

Yasuko Namba died from exhaustion and exposure, all alone.

Hannelore Schmatz Earned The Dubious Honor Of Being The First Woman To Die On Mount Everest

Hannelore Schmatz was a German mountaineer who successfully summitted Everest in October 1979. On the way down, Hannelore and her teammate, Ray Genet, were overcome with exhaustion and, despite their Sherpa's pleading to continue to Camp IV, they decided to spend the night inside the Death Zone. They set up a temporary camp without any cover, which was basically just sleeping bags.

Overnight, there was a severe snowstorm that left Ray Genet to die due to hypothermia. Shortly afterwards, Hannelore succumbed to exhaustion a mere 330 feet from camp. Her final words were said to be, “Water... water.”

Attempts to retrieve her body in 1984 resulted in the falling deaths of two men due to the extreme winds on the southern slope. For years, climbers at Camp IV would gaze upon Hannelore's body, still leaning against her long-since-deteriorated backpack with her eyes wide open and her hair blowing in the wind. As time dragged on, she simply became known as “The German Woman."

Eventually, the high winds swept Hannelore's body down the Kangshung face.

Hannelore Schmatz was not only the first German citizen but also the first woman to perish on the upper slopes of Everest.

A Google Exec Who Brought Maps Street View To The Mountain Found Himself Lost To Everest

In April of 2015, a massive earthquake rocked Nepal and claimed the lives of thousands. The 7.8 magnitude quake not only leveled ancient buildings in Kathmandu, but caused a monstrous avalanche on Mount Everest. Among the Everest dead was Dan Fredinburg, the head of privacy for Google X.

Fredinburg had started Google Adventure Team, which documented remote mountains, ocean floors, and reefs in the same manner that Google Maps details cities and towns. A mountain enthusiast, Fredinburg had scaled four of the Seven Summits of the world before attempting Everest.  (The Seven Summits is a mountaineering challenge to successfully climb the highest mountain on each of the seven continents.)

While Google refused to confirm details, allegedly Fredinburg and three other employees were on this expedition to Everest in order to enable a Street View trek to base camp as well as to bring a Street View camera to the summit.

During the avalanche, Dan suffered major head trauma and died from his injuries. The other three Google employees sustained injuries but were able to be evacuated. Google committed $1 million to the relief efforts and tried to supply updated satellite images to help in recovery missions.

Real Stories of How Famous Actors Were "Discovered",

Ashton Kutcher
Iowa-born Ashton Kutcher was studying engineering at the University of Iowa in 1996. While out at a bar one night, he was spotted by a talent agent who talked him into entering the Fresh Faces of Iowa modeling competition. The ever-handsome Kutcher won first place. He then dropped out of college to go to New York to enter the International Modeling and Talent Association competition.

Interestingly, Kutcher lost the big modeling competition to Josh Duhamel. However, Kutcher went on to appear in ads for Calvin Klein and Versace. Kutcher eventually packed his bags and headed to Hollywood to pursue acting. He landed the role as Michael Kelso on That '70s Show in 1998. It was his first audition.
Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron moved from South Africa to Hollywood when she was just 18 years old. She was on the verge of running out of cash and living in a sketchy hotel room when she was discovered at a bank. Actually, she was discovered at a bank while yelling at a teller because he wouldn't cash her paycheck. Apparently, it was a do-or-die situation for Theron.

She explained the ordeal during an interview with O Magazine, "I’m like, ‘It’s survival, people.’ If I didn’t cash that check, I wouldn’t have had a place to sleep that night. I said to the teller, ‘You don’t understand—please!’ I was begging and pleading, and a gentleman came over and tried to help. I had to fill out a ton of paperwork and open an account, and I cashed the check.”

Not only did the Oscar-winning actress cash her check, she also got discovered by a talent agent who was also at the bank. Theron scored her first feature film acting gig just a few months later in Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest in 1995.

Ellen Pompeo
Ellen Pompeo was working as a bartender at the SoHo Kitchen Bar & Grille in New York City in the mid-1990s. A casting agent saw her and signed Pompeo to an advertising campaign with L'Oreal. She soon appeared in minor television roles, including Law & Order and Friends. Film parts followed, and Pompeo made a memorable turn as Jake Gyllenhaal's love interest in Moonlight Mile and as Luke Wilson's love interest in the hit comedy Old School. Major breakout success eluded Pompeo until 2005 when she was cast as Meredith Grey, the titular doctor in the long-running ABC drama Grey's Anatomy.

Harrison Ford
Harrison Ford moved out to Hollywood to become an actor but quickly grew frustrated because of his lack of success. He taught himself carpentry in order to earn a living and support his family. Ford landed a small gig in George Lucas's American Graffiti (1973). However, success did not come quickly to Ford, who still had to do carpentry to make ends meet.

Then, Lucas spotted the 35-year-old doing woodwork at a movie studio while the director was conducting auditions for his new movie Star Wars. Lucas remembered Ford from his small role in American Graffiti and asked the actor to audition for the part of Han Solo. Once Ford landed the iconic gig, he no longer had to work in carpentry.

Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence is still years away from being 30, but it seems like the Academy Award-winning actress has been at the top of her game forever. The Kentucky native was vacationing in New York when a talent agent spotted the 12-year-old walking around Union Square. Lawrence quickly got work as a teen model before making her television debut on Monk in 2006. The Hunger Games heroine received her first Oscar nomination for her acclaimed performance in the indie drama Winter's Bone in 2010.

Johnny Depp
Note to Jackie Earle Haley: don't allow someone as hot as Johnny Depp to tag along with you for a movie audition. Haley planned to try out for Wes Craven's original A Nightmare on Elm Street. Depp did not have any plans for the day and accompanied his pal Haley to the set. Haley did not get the part, but Craven spotted Depp hanging around and asked him to audition. The future Jack Sparrow landed the role as Glen and made his feature film debut in 1984. Depp's Glen has one of the most famous kill scenes in horror movie history.

Mel Gibson
Mel Gibson was just being a good pal by giving a friend a ride to an audition. The Australian had been in a bar fight the night before and had bruises and cuts all over his face. His condition caught the eye of director George Miller, who thought that Gibson would be a good fit for one of the "offbeat or villainous" background roles in his post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie Mad Max. When Gibson returned to the set a few weeks later, Miller took one look at the bruise-free, extremely handsome Aussie, and decided to give him the lead role.

Natalie Portman
Neta-Lee Hershlag (Natalie Portman) was just being a normal 11-year-old gal, eating a slice of pizza on Long Island when a rep from Revlon spotted her. Portman told the rep that she didn't want to be a model but did want to get into acting. Portman spent a few summers honing her acting chops by working in theater productions. In 1993, she auditioned for the part of Mathilda Lando in Luc Besson's Léon: The Professional. The actress was turned away at first for being too young for the part. However, after a few more auditions, Besson cast the future Academy Award-winner for the role of a hitman in training.

Pamela Anderson
Pamela Anderson was working as a fitness instructor in 1989. While living in Vancouver, British Columbia, she attended a B.C. Lions football game wearing a Labatt Blue t-shirt. The sexy Anderson was put up on the stadium's Jumbotron, and the crowd cheered so enthusiastically that she was brought down to the football field for a standing ovation.

The Labatt company heard about the uproar and hired the future Playboy playmate as a "Blue Zone Girl" spokesmodel. After modeling in Playboy, Anderson began focusing on acting and she received small parts on several TV shows. Her big breakthrough came as "Tool Time Girl" Lisa on Home Improvement. Then, in 1992, Anderson got the role that would define her career, beautiful blonde bombshell C.J. Parker on Baywatch.

Rosario Dawson
Rosario Dawson was hanging out on her front porch with some friends when a photographer and screenwriter were walking by and spotted the 15-year-old. They told Dawson about a film they were working on and told her to come audition. Even with no acting experience, Dawson landed the part of Ruby in the controversial and extremely disturbing indie film Kids (1995). Dawson's Ruby was a promiscuous teenager in the edgy drama about a day in the life of carelessly sexually active, drug-taking teens in New York.
