The Top 6 Real-Life Versions of Batman Villains
With Christopher Nolan’s hyper-realistic depiction of the Batman Universe, we can’t help but remember that certain villains in the Batman mythos bear a surprising similarity to certain real-life criminals. Below are some examples and they're pretty good. After all, would you ever expect a real-life Mr. Freeze? Not likely. Other villians, like Catwoman, would be a bit more believable, but either way, you wouldn't expect normal, rational people to commit ridiculous crimes, nonetheless replicating a fictional character, right? Well, stranger things have happened.

This list takes a look at all the real-life Batman criminals, or at least the wannabes.
The Top 6 Real-Life Versions of Batman Villains,

Batman Villain: The Riddler (And Cluemaster*)
*Because We're Grown Up Now and Can Stop Pretending Those Are Two Different People

Modus Operandi: Crazy people who obsessively leave riddles (or clues) at the scenes of their crimes. No one can ever figure these clues out except Batman (and anyone reading the comic who’s more than eight years old).

Real Life Villain: Rodney Alcala

What Happened?

Frankly, there’ve been a few serial killers who have adopted the Riddler and Cluemaster’s brilliant strategy – the most famous of which are Jack the Ripper and the Zodiac Killer, who both sent multiple messages to the police daring them to catch them. Unlike their comic book counterparts, Jack and Zodiac were never caught, and they were more refined and brutal rather than silly and campy.

So instead of talking about them, let’s talk about Rodney Alcala: the Dating Game Killer, so named because he won a televised game show in the middle of his murder-spree.

Yes, we’re serious. Check out all the “riddles” and “clues” he leaves over the course of this video:

In case you can’t watch that, the choice quotes are “The best time is at night... because that’s the only time there is,” and, “I’m called the banana, and I look really good. Peel me!”

And in case that wasn’t enough, the guy actually won the competition, but Cheryl Bradshaw (the bachelorette) refused to go on a date with him because he was too “creepy” and “serial-killer-ish” (okay, we made that last one up). Still, you know she was thinking it – the other contestants reported that he freaked people out, and at this point he had already murdered at least one person.

Now, is it unfair for us to pull some quotes out of context from a TV Show that’s basically a sexual innuendo contest? Yes, that’s totally unfair. We’re being unfair to a convicted child murderer. We’ll do our best not to lose any sleep over it.
Batman Villain: Catwoman

Modus Operandi: Springing from creator Bob Kane’s hilariously sexist belief that “cats are as hard to understand as women are.... you have to keep them at arm’s length,” Catwoman is a cat burglar who dresses like a cat. She steals stuff, and she’s sexy enough to where male writers get anxious if they don’t mention how sexy she is every single goddamn time they bring her up.

Real Life Villain: Catwoman, seriously!

What Happened?

After a burglar made off with $86 from a high end shoe store in the East Village in New York City, this composite sketch made her something of an Internet celebrity.

And we don’t want to condone crime here, but if is this is a composite sketch of you, then we're going to say, Bravo! Because you’re Catwoman. And that's kinda awesome.
Batman Villain: The Mad Hatter

Modus Operandi: Jervis Tetch is probably one of the most reasonably crazy Batman villains out there, compared to “Ice to meet you!” and “I’m a murder clown!” thinking that Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland stories are real is pretty straightforward. He also uses a lot of mind-control stuff, since otherwise he’d pretty much just be a short dude in a hat.

Real Life Villain: Some Moldovan Dude!

What Happened?

Vladimir Kozak (fun fact: because comics got popular during the Cold War, every Eastern European name sounds like a comic book villain) was an alleged “hypnotist bank robber,” who managed to rob several banks in Eastern Europe’s poorest country using hypnosis techniques.

We should probably mention that none of his supposed “powers” were ever actually observed, and despite being a veritable God, he only managed to steal about $40,000 (enough for a pretty nice, but not too flashy, German car).

Also... like, really? And this has happened more than once? Well, you know what they say about Russia. (They say that they hypnotize bank tellers.)
Batman Villain: Mr. Freeze

Modus Operandi: “Ice” you might have guessed, Mr. Freeze has a “cool” theme that’s sure not to leave you “cold”: his usual strategy is to “shoot people with a cryogenic freeze ray until they die.” Presumably in utter agony. He also makes a lot cheesy puns.

Before becoming a villain, Mr. Freeze (real name “Victor Fries,” whose last name also sounds similar to the word for “very cold,” in case you didn't notice) was involved in an industrial accident that left him unable to survive outside of his cryo-suit, making him one of the few Batman villains to suffer from a crippling disability.

The Real Life Villain: Richard “Iceman” Kuklinski (Plus a couple of normal people)

What Happened?

As a contract killer working for the Decavalcante Crime family in the 1950’s and 60’s, “Iceman” practices murder by killing homeless people, eventually perfecting a strategy in which he would freeze the corpses of his victims for a length of time before thawing them out and disposing of the body – thereby misleading the authorities as to the time of death. Of course, this didn’t work at all, – but we guess the idea is kinda cool.

Of course, Kuklinski didn’t survive routinely at subzero temperatures like Freeze – but apparently that’s something people do. This Canadian girl was frozen solid for 24 hours when she was 2 years old, pronounced legally dead, and came back fine; and another guy survived being frozen in his car in Sweden for two months. Who'da thunk it?

No word on whether either of them plan on becoming super-villains – which means we’re forced to assume that they are.
Batman Villain: Harvey Two-Face Dent

Modus Operandi: As you can tell, Dent has a pretty noticeable defining trait – and it isn’t his personality. After being scarred by an acid attack in the courtroom (or having his face set on fire in an explosion, or whatever), “Two-Face” earned the horrific scarring that separated his face and personality into two distinct halves: the reasonable Harvey Dent and the psychopathic Two-Face.

Real Life Villain: Juan “Two-Face” Rivera-Velez

What Happened?
This “Two-Face” (yes, that’s his real nickname) was an enforcer for the Morales crime-family in Camden, New Jersey, and in 2009 was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for committing a whole bunch of murders.

Of course, Rivera Velez’s scars came from a car-crash, not a court-room acid attack, and didn’t play a role in his crimes (though it must’ve assisted in the all-important intimidation factor). And he was never a lawyer. So, basically, the guy is nothing like his namesake except for those scars.

But still! Look at those scars! And then remember that at one point he kicked down a door and said “I’m an enforcer!” That must’ve been awesome! Except then he murdered people, which probably wasn’t awesome. Man, it’s almost like the stuff that happens in comic books isn’t cool if you make it too realistic.
Batman Villain: The Penguin

Modus Operandi: Though non-comic-fans may only know Penguin as the sewer-dwelling psychopath from Tim Burton’s second film, the Penguin as originally conceived is a much classier brand of villain. Everything from the monocle to his weaponized umbrella scream I’m-so rich-I-laugh-in-the-face-of-practicality, meaning that Penguin is probably more similar to Batman than he is his fellow criminals. Whether holding up a bank or riding a dinosaur, Penguin is sure to find a way to use his umbrella for pretty much anything.

The Real Life Villain: An Unknown KGB Assassin

What Happened?

In 1978, Bulgarian dissident Georgi Markov was assassinated in London by an umbrella specially modified to fire a poisoned dart. Despite the fact that he attempted a similar assassination just a few days later, the assassin was never caught. Several years of speculation and controversy ended when the Iron Curtain fell, and similar devices were discovered in KGB compounds.

After a little bit of thought, it doesn’t actually seem that weird of a weapon to choose. After all, it rains a lot in London, and who wants to carry around both an umbrella and a blowgun full of sarin? A poison-shooting umbrella is pretty much the Smart-Phone of international spy-work.

The biggest difference between the KGB assassin and Penguin is that the real-life version was never caught. After 30 years of investigation, police are still on the case – but since London is a little out of Batman’s jurisdiction, we don’t think it’s likely they’ll make much progress.

The Most Incredible Things Ever Found in Attics
Since the dawn of storage areas in the roofs of houses, there has been interesting things found in attics (don't take this fact as historically accurate). There are lots of things found in attics, like dust bunnies, cobwebs, sawdust, rafter beams, and the occasional bat, raccoon, or squirrel. But there are also stories about attics that contain a treasure trove of rare, astonishing, shocking, creepy, and downright weird things. Want to know about some of the most incredible things found in attics? Then read on...
The Most Incredible Things Ever Found in Attics,

A Hidden WWII-Era Room
Reddit user mYNDIG discovered a hidden room tucked behind a wall in their attic. The small area contained a narrow bed and a pillow on the floor, ostensibly for sitting. There was a sign above the bed that read (roughly translated from Danish) "If you have a bad stomach, then you don't have access." There was also a light alarm affixed to the wall, meaning this room was probably designed as a hiding place from Nazis.
A Comic Book Collection Worth Millions
A Dallas, Texas, man found his uncle's well-perserved comic book collection while cleaning out his aunt's attic in 2012. Among the rare titles in the collection were a Detective Comics #27, featuring the debut of Batman, and Action Comics #1, which features the first appearance of Superman. Save your comics, kids!
A Record Collection Belonging to Hitler
In 1991, a woman living Moscow discovered a box of records that once belonged to Adolf Hitler. Her father was a Soviet general during World War II, and he apparently took the records as a souvenir of his time served.
A Cache of Love Letters
A couple in Lubbock, Texas, discovered a pillowcase full of WWII-era love letters from a soldier to his wife in December of 2014. Sadly, the letter writer and his wife had both passed way in the late '90s, so the couple returned the letters to their children.
A Picasso Painting
In 2015, Kirkaldy, United Kingdom, resident Dominic Currie discovered an original painting by Pablo Picasso in a suitcase stored in his attic. It reportedly belonged to his mother, who had received it as a gift from her World War II Russian soldier lover.
A Lost MLK Interview
In 2012, a Chattanooga, Tennessee, man discovered an audio interview with Martin Luther King, Jr. stashed away in his attic, conducted by the man's father.
A Stolen Stradivarius Violin
In 1980, violinist Roman Totenberg had his beloved Stradivarius violin stolen from his office while he greeted patrons of the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachutsetts following a concert. Thirty-five years later, in August 2015, the purloined instrument was discovered in the attic of a California resident, whose father - himself a struggling musician - had taken the Stradivarius in moment of jealous foolishness. The violin was returned to Totenberg's family.
A Puzzle Box Filled with Jewelry
Normally you shouldn't solve puzzle boxes you find lying around in attics (because, you know, Pinhead and the Cenobites and all that), but in the case of Reddit user bellalunacy, solving the box was a good idea: it contained jewelry.
A Child's Body
In January 2016, the remains of a preteen were discovered in the attic of a Richmond, Virginia, duplex. At the time of the discovery, it was unknown how long the child's body had been in the attic.
A Pirate Radio Operation
People often find old treasures or absolutely bonkers things in their attic. Rated-M of Reddit found a wealth of radio broadcasting equipment set up in what appeared to be a mini pirate radio outfit.

The Worst Things That Have Ever Happened at Zoos
When one spends a day at the zoo, they may expect a little excitement, a little curiosity, and an awesome chance to see some of wildlife's most vibrant, odd, and fascinating creatures. What you don't expect is to fall into the pit of a lion's den and have your clothes and body parts ripped to shreds. Although you're likely in the vast majority that has never had the unfortunate luck of experiencing such a high-stakes standoff against nature's greatest predators, there are some who have not been so fortunate. For every photographer leaning just a little too closely over the edge than they should be, there are major zoo accidents waiting to happen. Catastrophic zoo deaths make crazy news stories because they're actually so rare. But even some of the most experienced wildlife trainers, biologists, and veterinarians have had some very, VERY bad things happen to them at the zoo.

All bad zoo news stories, unique in their own way, are nature's way of telling us that these beasts are not to be messed with. Lack of respect for the animal kingdom could cost you your arm or leg. And don't think that just because there's a thick layer of glass between you that these stronger-than-you-think mammals can't find a way to take you out if you piss them off enough. These animal anecdotes below are some of the worst things that have ever happened at zoos and are fair warning for your next visit.
The Worst Things That Have Ever Happened at Zoos,

San Francisco Tiger Escapes Its Cage
On a particularly unhappy Christmas, Tatiana the tiger mauled San Francisco Zoo visitors after escaping from her sanctuary. Although this was not Tatiana's first time attacking someone, it was her first time leaping a 20 foot wall and 15 foot moat to do so. Tatiana preyed on three attendees, killing one of them. Advising people in the area to take cover, police entered the premises, spotted Tatiana chilling by one of the survivors, and shot at her. The open fire killed Tatiana and ruined everyone's Christmas.
Bengal Tigers Maul a Zoo Cleaner
In 2008 at a Singapore zoo, Nordin bin Mongdong was going about his usual day as a zoo cleaner. Noted by onlookers as moseying his way through the Bengal tiger habitat, Mongdong had been sweeping the moat around the tigers' home. But when a group of the Bengals lunged at Nordin, visitors could do nothing but scream. According to sources, tourists watching the scene yelled at Mongdong to leap into the water, but it was too late. When workers finally were able to break Mongdong away from the Bengals, his injuries were far too serious, leaving no hope of saving his life.
Man Releases Animals from His Private Zoo
Terry Thompson was known for preserving and collecting rare, exotic animals for his private wildlife refuge, located on his estate. However, right before Thompson committed suicide, he made the decision to release his array of jungle beasts onto Zanesville, Ohio. After receiving reports from witnesses who saw the animals unleashed, police were forced to respond. Unfortunately, many of the animals were displaying extreme aggression, and the county feared their proximity to the public. Zanesville police had no choice but to shoot the majority of the escaped animals dead, which resulted in the event being dubbed the Zanesville Massacre. Wildlife experts expressed grief at the loss of so many animals that are on the verge of extinction. Turns out it's not so fun free the animals from the zoo after all.
Binky the Polar Bear Bites Back
If you want to get up close and personal with Binky, then be prepared to face the consequences. After attacking Kathryn Warburton, an Australian tourist visiting an Alaskan zoo, Binky achieved unprecedented fame. Warbuton had jumped a few railings to take a better photograph of the polar bear, but Binky didn't seem to like the flash. Binky stuck his face through the railings and chomped down on Warbuton, breaking her leg. The polar bear kept the woman's shoe as a souvenir for three days until zoo keepers were able to safely retrieve it. Warburton donated the relic to a local bar, and Binky reached peak stardom. Merchandise and memorabilia featuring the polar bear's face became popular after the story received heavy media attention.
Tilikum Thrashes a Seaworld Trainer
Focus of the controversial documetnary Blackfish, Tilikum the Killer Whale has spent the majority of his life living in a contained bubble. Weighing at nearly 12,000 pounds and identifiable by his signature curved-dorsal fin, Tilikum is likely Sea World's most famous "Shamu" in the run's history. However, Tilikum isn't known for his fun, showtime playfulness, but rather his unprecedented aggression, formed after having spent over half his lifetime in captivity. Neither his first outburst nor instance of visible hostility, Tilikum reached peak recognition when he killed Dawn Brancheau, considered a very experienced trainer, during a live performance. When Brancheau leaned in to give Tilikum a belly rub, the enormous whale leaped up and grabbed her by the waist. After thrashing her around, Tilikum repeatedly dragged her through the water, drowning her. Tilikum had previously been involved in multiple deaths and attacks against trainers, but Sea World officials still kept the dangerous creature around for the delight of the guests.
Melody the Tapir Gets Maternal
When Lisa Morehead made her morning rounds to feed Melody the Tapir, the hog/pig-like creature bit off more than the Oklahoma zookeeper bargained for. After reaching into a two foot opening to place food in the enclosure, Melody latched onto Morehead's arm and pulled her into the cage. Morehead's arm was severed by the beast and was deemed too "mangled" to reattach. Reasons for Melody's sudden and unexpected aggression are not entirely clear, but most officials and animal professionals have chalked it up to maternal instinct. Melody's two-month-old baby tapir was also in the cage with her.
Egyptian Cobra Escapes from Nyc Zoo
When an extremely venomous Egyptian cobra escaped from its exhibit at the NYC Bronx Zoo, the city that never sleeps was left feeling restless. For six days, Bronx zookeepers conducted thorough sweeps of the zoo as they searched for the snake that inexplicably slipped out of the reptilian glass enclosure. Finally, the cobra was found, a mere 100 feet away from the exhibit it left behind. Zookeepers lured the snake out using rodents. Said to be able to kill a person in 15 minutes with its venom, the cobra proved an incredible threat to attendees. Thankfully, instead of attacking visitors, the Egyptian cobra started its own Twitter account to keep fans updated on its metro-link adventures.
Harambe Gets Gunned Down to Save Toddler

A four-year-old made national headlines when he accidentally sneaked past his mother and protective fences at the Cincinnati Zoo in 2016. Unfortunately, the little boy found himself smack dab in the middle of the gorilla enclosure with a 450-pound silverback gorilla named Harambe. Zoo officials eventually had to shoot and kill the animal to protect the child (tranquilizing it could have caused an adverse, violent reaction). Some argued that the gorilla was actually trying to protect the child, although police were worried about his less-than-gentle dragging of the boy across the enclosure. The moral of the story? Keep an eye on your children at all times, especially at the zoo.

As for Harambe, the gorilla's death has unexpectedly sparked a rabid fan base, inspiring countless memes, artwork, and various other forms of Internet media. Much to the Cincinnati Zoo's chagrin, Harambe's martyrdom has motivated Internet users to troll the zoo's social media presence. The Cincinnati Zoo has since shut down their Twitter account in an attempt to make #justiceforharambe stop trending.

Emaciated Bears Beg For Food At Indonesian Zoo

Video obtained by PETA Asia from January 2017 shows a pen full of sun bears begging for food. In the video the bears appear emaciated and skeletal. One report said the bears were so hungry they resorted to eating their own feces.

This isn't the first time the Bandung Zoo in West Java, Indonesia has come under fire. In May 2016, news outlets reported a elephant named Yani died after being chained up at the zoo. Some said they could hear Yani crying. She was covered in bruises and was reportedly paralyzed before her death.

Mila the Elephant Stomps the Yard
New Zealand zoo owner Helen Schofield was making arrangements for the 7600-pound elephant Mila to transfer to a new home. When Schofield entered Mila's sanctuary, the gargantuan pachyderm became frightened after braising an electric fence bordering the enclosure. Spooked by the currents, Mila grabbed Schofield with her trunk, ultimately crushing her midair, all to the horror of a live audience. Schofield died from her sustained injuries. After the traumatizing incident, wildlife experts became concerned about what to do with Mila. It was eventually decided that she would be transferred to the San Diego Zoo, where she would be quarantined and progressively incorporated into the rest of the elephant herd. Jenny Chung, Schofield's sister, attended Mila's arrival to confront the animal that took her sister's life. Chung expressed that there were no hard feelings, stating that deep down she knew that Mila didn't intend to hurt Helen.

Hikers Describe The Creepiest Thing They

Where do you think horror movies get their inspiration for the crazy things that happen to hikers and campers in the woods? Straight from real life of course! We’ve compiled a list of some of the creepiest true stories and oddest encounters people have come across while communing with nature. The one thing most of the hikers on our list have in common is unlike their movie counterparts, they don’t stick around to risk being hacked to pieces by Jason and his buddies. Which one of the below real life hiking alone scenarios is your favorite and that you will be sure to add to your repertoire of scary campfire stories? Vote on your favorite and tell us why!

Hikers Describe The Creepiest Thing They've Ever Seen Hiking,

Visitor caught watching campers from the shadows

“I was hiking in southern Virginia and came to a shelter. At this point it was about an hour until sundown and two other hikers had already set up camp and gotten a fire going. I decided to sling my tent up and make some dinner. I'm sitting there munching on my crappy re-hydrated dinner as the sun is going down. As my eyes began to adjust to the darkness, I glanced over towards the shelter and suddenly realize that I can see the whites of a person’s eyes in the shelter. This dude had smeared soot from the firepit all over his face and body, and had been sitting in the shadows watching the other hikers and myself the entire time. I tried to stealthily let the other hikers know what was up and I go the hell out of there.”

Two friends stumble upon serial killer's sacrificial altar

"Bushwalking in NSW (Australia), me and my friend came across this weird platform looking thing made out of rocks. Later that year, the cops arrested some bloke on suspicion of the murders of a series of backpackers who had gone missing over the course of a few years, and at the sites of several of the murders slightly off in the bush were these “altars.” Turns out, it was the altars we found. They were typically no more than 300 yards from the victim's shallow graves. The guy who was arrested and subsequently convicted for the murders is Ivan Milat, Australia's worst serial killer."

Group of friends find very strange, silent, unmoving man

“When I was out exploring an old abandoned quarry with some friends, we found this dude standing, staring at this rock, occasionally twitching, but he never turned around. We were pretty creeped out so didn't investigate, and left pretty soon after. Later on that night, we found out that another friend was driving down the lane that runs parallel to the quarry and found a guy in a black coat standing in the middle of the road who wouldn't move. She was pretty freaked out and had to reverse all the way back up the lane in the dark because he was still there. Pretty sure it was the same guy.”

Australian trailblazers make unexpected discovery

“A mate and I hiked through the bush near Tamborine Mountain, Australia,in 2010. We made our own trail, slashing through vines with machetes. It was a lot of fun and really off the beaten track. A couple of hours into our hike, we started to hear DUM BUM BUM BUM, the beat of jungle drums. Weird as hell, right? These drum beats had absolutely no place in the Australian jungle. Our curiosity piqued, we headed towards the sound. Slashing through a thick wall of vines, we emerged into a clearing and saw the source of the drums. We saw about 25 guys wearing grass skirts and dancing around a fire. They noticed us. The drums stopped. Utter silence. They all stared at us. We were terrified. Then rhe director ran up, yelled, 'Cut,' and asked us what we thought we were doing. We had stumbled onto the film set of a KitKat commercial.”

Kayakers find bizarre campsite and altar

“A few summers ago, I was canoeing in Boundary Waters with some friends. A few days into our trip, we found the creepiest campsite on an island. There was brand-new, abandoned camping equipment everywhere and throughout the campsite, sticks with the ends charred had been stuck in the ground. In the remains of the fire was a heavily charred toothbrush, along with the remains of a wallet, glasses, papers and some clothes. The creepiest part was near the edge where a single petrified moose alter had been wedged between some boulders and surrounded by charred sticks in a circle. We got the hell out of there and as far away as we could before night. It looked like a scene straight out of a horror movie.”

Hikers followed by extremely creepy entity (this one is freaky)

“This past winter I hiked a very high peak with a buddy of mine and camped out overnight. Everything was fine the entire first day we were there. We had a great night’s sleep and woke up early to hike back to the parking area. On the way back down the trail my friend and I noticed that someone else had been hiking as well. About a mile after walking, I stopped and saw that my full name, first and last, was drawn into the snow on the side of the foot path. I didn't do it, neither did my friend. It was snowing a bit throughout the night and if it was drawn the day before, the snow would have covered it up. We got a bit freaked out and decided to hustle back to our car so we could get out of there. We finally get back to the parking area and I went to sign myself out of the registry book. When I turned the page to where I signed in, I see that someone had scribbled out all of my information so you couldn't read it anymore. No one else had signed into the book besides myself for three days. I will NOT be going back there.”

Group of adventurers make grisly discovery

“My two friends and I were hiking in a pretty popular spot with a 150-ft waterfall that takes about 45 minutes of uphill hiking. We decided to go to the bottom of the waterfall where there are various little pools and boulders and the water runs off from the waterfall. This is not on the main trail and not many hikers ever veer off of the main trail. We found a 22-year-old girl face down in the mud, both legs broken with compound fractures. She had no cell phone, no water, no food, and nothing to keep her warm. Her friend was already dead.

We called 9-1-1 and gave her any supplies we had. Eventually a helicopter showed up and they flew her to the nearest hospital. It turns out she was hiking with her friend the NIGHT BEFORE when they both fell off of the waterfall. Her friend must have gone to get help, but unfortunately died less than 100 yards from where we found the girl, so no one knew she was hurt or that she was even there. It's a miracle she was still alive and mind blowing to think what she had gone through when we found her 20 hours later.”

Two brothers come upon hanging man

"Hiking the AT in PA for a week: my brother and I came across a young man who had hung himself. We sprinted up to the bluff where he was strung up. I wrapped my arms around his waist to take weight off his neck while my brother cut him down with his knife. The guy had thrown the rope up over a tall branch and lashed it off with a clove hitch at the trunk like you'd hang a bear-bag. Must have climbed the branches and dropped once laced in. We probably shouldn't have even tried, he was dead for some time before we happened across him. Fortunately no critters had come to tear him apart before we found him, it would have only gotten grislier. We called 9-1-1. This ended our trip pretty damn quick."

Father and his children have extremely unsettling cave experience

"I took my young children to a cave not far from our house. It was a popular spot but we had the place to ourselves. You can walk through it in about 30 minutes without too much difficulty. It has a tiny exit at the opposite end. It was pretty muddy, so we decided to turn around and head back to the entrance. Halfway back, there was a lit candle sitting about eight feet up one side. It was definitely not there on the first trip. I went into full-on protective-dad-mode knowing there was likely someone hiding in the dark while we walked the rest of the way out."

Biology major finds child's bones

“As a biology major who remembered how to identify bones from my anatomy class, I'm pretty sure our dogs found bones from a small human while we were hiking off trail outside Colorado Springs. I told my friends they could belong to a recently kidnapped and murdered girl, Heather Dawn Church. They convinced me I was being dramatic and I forgot about it. A couple years later her body was found in the exact same area.”

11 Lottery Winners Who Died Tragically
As the old adage goes, money isn't everything. And for some people it could be the worst thing. While winning the lottery may seem like a dream come true, not everyone who hits the jackpot goes on to live happily ever after.

The big winner who suddenly has lots of money also has all types of unforeseen pressures...and, of course, newfound means that can get them into trouble. Many crack under the pressure, end up dealing with jealous family or loved ones, and (since money is no object) quite a few have turned to drugs.

Seems there has been a curse on lottery big winners. Some winners have encountered strange deaths, ended up as murder victims, committed suicide, or met an otherwise untimely death.  Here's a list of 10 Lottery winners who died tragically because of their winnings.
11 Lottery Winners Who Died Tragically,

Abraham Shakespeare
Another big winner, Abraham Shakespeare hit it large in the Florida state lotto for $31 million. Shakespeare lived it up for a couple of years, almost having spent all his money until he suddenly disappeared in 2006. His body was found under a concrete slab in 2010. Suspicions turned to a woman Shakespeare was associated with who had apparently bilked him out of over a million dollars. She was eventually charged in connection to his murder.

Amanda Clayton
Single mom Amanda Clayton struck it rich hitting the lotto in Michigan for $1 million in 2011. A welfare recipient, Clayton had previously struggled to take care of her two kids. But greed is a strange thing. She was convicted of welfare fraud and sentenced to probation when it was discovered that she continued to receive food stamps after hitting the lotto. Possibly, it could've been a bad drug habit that drove Clayton to deceive the government. Only 25-years old, she was found dead in 2012 due to a drug overdose.

Ryan McKechnie
It looked like life was offering Ryan McKechnie another chance when the 31-year-old hit the Irish lotto in 2012 for £40 000 (66,552.00 in U.S. dollars). A former drug addict, McKechnie had already kicked the habit prior to winning and was in the midst of raising his three children alone after their mother died of drug-related causes in 2013.

Generous with his friends, however, the money was quickly gone, forcing McKechnie to struggle to make ends meet for he and his family. Apparently, someone believed that he still had a stash of cash. He was found stabbed to death in his home in February.

Urooj Khan
Poor Urooj Khan should've kept his promise to himself. A lottery-ticket-buying addict, he'd sworn off buying lottery tickets. But the 46-year-old Chicagoan couldn't fight the urge; he had to buy one more. Bam! His ticket hits the million dollar jackpot. Lucky son of a gun.

Deciding to cash out the ticket in one lump sum instead of installments, Khan waited with much anticipation for that first check of $425,000.00. Tragically, he never saw a dime of it. He suddenly dropped dead the day after his winnings were publicly announced. The coroner said it was natural causes. But a close family member wasn't buying it. Sure enough, another autopsy revealed that Khan died of cyanide poisoning. And after he was dead, his estate quickly cashed the check. Naturally, the local police department is treating his death now as a homicide.

Craigory Burch, Jr.
Craigory Burch, Jr. won nearly a half million dollars from a Georgia lottery in November of 2015. Just two months later, he was found dead in his home from gunshot wounds after a violent home invasion. Armed robbers entered the 20-year-old's home with masks and shotguns, demanding his money. According to his girlfriend, who ran for help during the robbery, Burch pleaded with them not to kill him in front of his kids. He told them they could have his bank card, but when the thieves couldn't find his wallet, they shot him and ran away. Burch had recently used some of his $434,272 Fantasy 5 winnings to buy Christmas presents for the less fortunate.

Jeffrey Dampier
An enterprising man, when Jeffrey Dampier won $20 million in the Illinois state jackpot, he took some of his winnings and opened up a gourmet popcorn shop. He also lavished gifts on his sister-in-law with whom he'd been having an affair.

Unfortunately, Dampier's sister-in-law had plans for some of the money that hadn't been spent. Along with her boyfriend, she helped kidnap Dampier and then shot him to death. The couple were convicted for the crime and both are serving life sentences.

Billie Bob Harrell, Jr.
Good old boy Billie Bob Harrell, Jr., was on top of the world when he hit the $31 million dollar jackpot in Texas. Who wouldn't be? That's a lotta moolah. Billie Bob quit his job, took his family to Hawaii, and - generous soul that he was - donated tens of thousands to various charities. Sadly, he made a deal with a company to pay him a lump sum instead of allotments over time. Doing so, he ended up receiving far less than he originally won. That along with constant harassment over his money and his wife ultimately leaving him more than likely pushed him over the edge. He was found at his home, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Doris Murray
All Doris Murray's dreams were about to come true when she struck it rich hitting the Georgia state lottery jackpot for $5 million. But unlike some other lotto winners who squander their money, the mother of four kept a low profile and continued to live modestly. Too bad she didn't have the greatest taste in men.

After she threatened to break up with her boyfriend, he stabbed her to death just a year after she won the lottery. Family and friends insist it was all over the money.

Keith Gough
What a tragic tale. Keith Gough seemed like a really nice guy. After winning a whooping £9 million ($14,993,100.00 in U.S. dollars) in 2005, Keigh Gough pulled out all stops. An avid horse race fan, he blew millions at the tracks and other gambling pursuits. Apparently, he wasn't the brightest apple in the barrel either; he invested a large amount of his cash in shady business deals. In short, his wife left him and he ended up penniless.

So upset was he over his financial ruin that he suffered a heart attack at the home of his nephew and died.

David Edwards
Another big spender, David Edwards went through $12 million in his first year as a lottery legend. But hey, that must've seemed like a drop in the bucket in comparison to his overall winnings, which totaled $270 million.

After purchasing a Learjet, mansions, a fleet of cars and squandering away untold amounts of cash, poor David ended up living in a storage unit with his wife. Having contracted hepatitis due to intravenous drug use, David died at the age of 58 completely penniless in a hospice somewhere in Kentucky.

12 Reddit Let's Not Meet Stories That'll Make You Fear Life,

Terrorized for Two Hours by a Home Intruder

Living in a house with your classmates can be a good time, until someone shows up uninvited. When a college girl returned from a late night out, she noticed a man asleep on the couch. Thinking he was a friend of one of her roommates, she brushed it off and went to bed.

A few hours later she was awakened by incessant scratching at her door. She called her roommate to tell her that the friend was creeping her out, but her roommate had no idea who she was talking about. They never had any guys over. The man outside her door was an intruder, dead set on getting inside her bedroom. This young woman’s experience will make you double-check the locks on your doors—and sleep with a weapon!

The Smiling Man

One Redditor's late night neighborhood walk took a terrifying turn when a dancing man showed up in the middle of the street. The man was tall, his eyes were wide, and his smile stretched the width of his face. Just when it seemed as though the smiling man was harmless, he began chasing the Redditor throughout their neighborhood. The chilling experience will make you second guess getting in that late night cardio session.

Roommate Wanted: Female Only

You can’t always trust people you meet online. When a young woman looking for an apartment stumbled on a Craigslist ad for a female roommate, she jumped at the chance to check the place out. When she got to the house, she was greeted by a creepy man claiming to be the landlord. Red flags didn't really start to go off for the young woman until the “landlord” became eager to show her the basement. She then faked a phone call and left the showing. This turned out to be a real stroke of luck as, according to the Redditor who posted the tale:

"The house had been foreclosed over six months earlier and the property had been abandoned. When the police investigated, they found that the closed room the "landlord" didn't want her to look in was where the man had been staying. There was a pile of old dirty blankets, rotten food, and empty gallon jugs everywhere. More creepy was he had plastered ripped up pages from porno mags on ALL the walls in the room (where do they even find porno mags!?).

The really scary part of this was the basement. The man had tied a thin piece of fishing twine at about shin level across the stairs about halfway down. The basement was empty except another pile of old blankets, a broom handle wrapped in leather belts, and a small box with a few rolls of assorted tape (duct, electric, etc)."

The Creepiest Room Ever Found Under a Bride

Curiosity can get the best of you, and sometimes it can put you into a dangerous situation. When a group of friends from Wales, UK decided to check out what was inside a cement bridge, they were horrified at what they found.

Inside the dark, narrow walls of the bridge they discovered a room seemingly belonging to a very deranged individual. The Redditor's own words describe the situation best:

"In front of me was a single fold-away chair positioned facing a wall. On the wall was a partially torn page from a newspaper, or a magazine, showing a fully naked lady in an erotic position. The reason I don't just refer to it as 'porn' is because something was different about it; I can't put my finger on it but it seemed more sinister than sexy, if that makes any sense.

More disturbingly the eyes of the woman on display had been cut from the page. Removed with precision, not just hastily ripped off. The scene that lay before us had rendered us completely speechless, and an overpowering sense of panic could be felt collectively. That was when we found the condom. The horrendous, gut-wrenching, blood-drenched condom."

Understandably, OP and his friends high-tailed it right out of there.

The "One Who Got Away" from the Railroad Killer

Sometimes it’s hard to deny someone asking for help, but saying “no” saved one college student’s life. She was leaving campus one night when a strange man approached her. He asked to be taken to the hospital, but the girl said no. Months later, two kids from her college were attacked by a man in the same area, and one of them died. When the girl saw the assailant on the news, she realized he was the same man who had approached her that night. It turned out the man was Angel Maturino Resendiz, the Railroad Killerwho used the railroad system to commit 15 murders.

The Child Porn Ring Office in the Middle of Nowhere

Summer jobs are supposed to be a mindless way to earn some money. However, one afternoon a 19-year-old junk removal worker got much more than he bargained for. While traveling to a watering hole with his boss in the Australian desert, they discovered a large blue shipping container in the middle of nowhere. Once inside, the discovered an entire office, including computers and surveillance equipment.

They made an even grislier discovery when checking storage boxes. Said the Redditor:

"It didn't take long for me to realise that the this box was full of posters, DVDs and photos, all of hard core child pornography. One thing that still gets to me is that it was all neatly ordered in to folders and smaller boxes… These people were organised."

They then fled to find help. When they later returned to the area with police, the storage container was on fire and all of the evidence was gone.

A True, Very Creepy Surveillance Story

An Australian family was excited when they finally got cable for their home—and who wouldn’t be? However, when one of the kids got a cable transmitter for his bedroom, he picked up a horrifying signal on his television. They found the image of someone’s bedroom, and quickly realized it was their neighbor’s room.

Things got creepier from there. They soon saw a plumber working on the house, and adjusting the camera. As it turned out, the plumber had installed surveillance in the neighbor’s home to watch them in their bed. This surveillance story will make you more selective about who you hire for help.

The Man in the Yellow Raincoat: A Serial Killer in Disguise

What would you do if you got on the elevator in your apartment building and noticed a creepy guy in a yellow raincoat? Luckily for one woman in Seoul, her quick thinking saved her life.

Immediately unnerved by the man’s appearance, she pretended to call a friend on the phone to tell her she was on her way up to the apartment. When she got off the elevator, the man followed her. When the man realized she was struggling to get into her apartment, he charged after her, but fortunately the woman managed to get into her apartment unharmed.

Months later when watching the news, she saw the man in the yellow raincoat—he turned out to be Yoo Young-chul, a serial killer who murdered 21 people in Korea.

"Dr. Ramsey" Stalked an Entire Family
When a 10-year-old girl had a chance encounter with a “pediatrician” named Dr. Ramsey on the street, her entire life was changed. Dr. Ramsey immediately became fixated on the girl, stalking her and her family for months. Law enforcement was unable to help, leaving the family to suffer at the hands of a madman. The terrifying tale of obsession will make you think twice before your next walk around the block.
The Creepy Mountain Man

You often meet the strangest people working in retail, and sometimes those people can be dangerous. When a 17-year-old girl met an eerie mountain man at the West Virginia store where she worked, she brushed him off as just another creepy customer.

But one night when she was closing up shop, she discovered the lengths to which he was willing to go to make her his: namely, ensuring her car wouldn't start and then attacking the vehicle with a crowbar when she wouldn't open her door. The girl survived a horrifying attack and uncovered the man’s sinister intentions to kidnap her. Her frightening tale will make you wary the next time you’re checking out the next customer in line.

The 7 Craziest Real-Life Monster Attacks
From zombies and werewolves, and even vampires, here are seven news stories of real-life attacks by people (or creatures?) purporting to be real-life monsters. Most of these people are absolutely insane, were off their meds, or belong in an institution, but either way, it's fun to speculate that at least one of these is a supernatural being living among us - as a complete loser.

What are some cases of real monsters being found? This list of real life monster attacks highlights what some people THINK is going on in the dark corners of the earth (or in the bright corners of the 7-11 in some cases).
The 7 Craziest Real-Life Monster Attacks,

Vampire Causes Car Accident
Though they can change their form to bats, wolves, and even mist, sometimes vampires can just be d*cks.

According to a Colorado woman, she was forced off the road while driving home after she saw a vampire standing in the middle of it. When the police arrived on the scene the offending Nosferatu had vanished. The police do not suspect that any alcohol or drugs were involved, though there was evidence that the woman was not on her prescribed medication.

One small boy interviewed by the local news said "I don't believe she saw a vampire," while a local teenage girl added, "That would be cool though. I hope that's the case."

A Werewolf in Texas
Werewolves are known to roam the misty fields on a full moon, looking for prey to feast on, ever-changing and enigmatic. Unfortunately, with deforestation, they are being forced out of their native habitats. In this case, it seems that they have ended up in suburban San Antonio. And, most likely because of their lack of native habitat, they have become very sad, which is the only rational explanation for someone who claims to be an other-worldly badass creature looking like a reject from a My Chemical Romance tryout.

A photo surfaced on the internet of a bloody hand holding a decapitated dog's head. It was traced to Sarah "Wolfie Blackheart" Rodriguez, a local "teen wolf." When confronted about the picture she claims that a friend brought their dead dog to her and posted that photo, but she had nothing to do with it (other than holding it, of course). According to Wolfie, she would never hurt another dog, though that doesn't keep her from taking huge knives to school (but still no cell phones allowed?)

Man Punches Zombie Dining at Local Mexican Restaurant
This is a little different from the previous stories. This story involves a man taking the initiative and attacking the monster before anyone could be harmed, like a considerate, safety-conscious psychopath.

In Iowa City, a place well known for its undead infestation (???), a man was accused of approaching a stranger in line at a local restaurant and punching him twice in the face while exclaiming that the man was a zombie.

He then punched the zombie one more time, breaking his (its?) nose. The man then ran out the back door leaving the poor shambler to be taken to the hospital. The victim (the "zombie"), surprisingly, had not ordered the brains as part of his meal and the attacker was never caught.

19 Year Old 500 Year Old Vampire Feeds on Texas Woman
A woman was in her apartment when she heard a noise, and like a good horror movie victim, she went to investigate. She was hit in the head by alleged "vampire" Lyle Bensley and was then forced against the wall by an assailant who then bit her on the neck. She somehow escaped and drove to a friend's house where she called the police.

When they arrived at her apartment, they discovered Bensley in the parking lot completely unclothed except for his boxers, snarling and hissing. He led them on a chase, including scaling 2 fences, before they caught him.

While taking him to jail, Bensley told them that he was a 500 year-old vampire and needed to feed. He also insisted that he didn't want to hurt anyone and wanted to be restrained while trying to bite the guards.

Reporters insist that Bensley is just a victim of mass media induced hallucinations, but most think that if he just had better taste in movies, all of this could have been avoided. The woman suffered very minor injuries and is totally fine. "I've dealt with some really strange people," said Heyse. "You know, guys who think they're Jesus and that. But I've never seen anything like this."

Vampire-Werewolf Hybrid "Sexually Assaults" Young Girl
19 year old Kristian Allen Carl learned the hard way that life isn't like the movies, it seems, and trying to bang 15 year old girls is only okay if you're a fictional vampire.

Carl was charged in Pennsylvania for sexual assault after it was discovered he was having intercourse with a 15 year-old girl. What the police didn't know was that Carl was the product of an unholy union of vampire and werewolf.

When asked to prove that he was a hybrid, Carl exposed his canine teeth to the officer. Hilariously, he was then informed by the police that all mammals, including humans, have canine teeth.

The girl told police that he was her boyfriend, but since she was underage, Carl faced charges of statutory rape. Once again proving that vampire/human girl relationships are doomed from the start.

Vampire Mauls Elderly Man
Milton Ellis is an older, wheelchair bound, gentleman living in St. Petersburg, Florida. One day he encountered Josephine Smith, a 22 year-old vagrant, on the streets while going home. The two started talking and seemed to hit it off, so when it started pouring they took shelter together on the porch of a vacant Hooters - classic RomCom faire.

Ellis, being a very old man, fell asleep while waiting for the rain to stop. He awoke suddenly to find Smith on his lap, which would've been awesome in any other occasion. But when he asked what she was doing there, she replied, "I'm a vampire. I am going to eat you." She then proceeded to bite him in various places, including his arm and lips, and broke enough skin that he was left bloody.

Ellis struggled to escape but being in a wheelchair made it difficult to do so. He eventually did, made it to a phone and called the police. He was rushed to the hospital and was treated with stitches.

The police found Smith when they arrived at the scene. She was half-naked and covered in blood. According to her, she had no memory of the events. She was arrested and was held on bail for $50,000. Hopefully the bars at the prison have enough silver in them to hold the kind of blood-sucking fiend.

A Canadian Zombie Killer in Scotland
Though they are more well known for their werewolves that roam the foggy glens and monsters in lochs, Scotland is not without their undead attacks. In July of 2011, 21 year-old Michael Davis was walking from one job to another when he was attacked by Canadian man, Tianh*i Zhan. Davis was stabbed multiple times by Zhan.

When tried, Zhan was found not guilty by means of insanity when he claimed that he killed Davis because he (Davis) was a zombie. This makes sense, though, because of course he was insane. Every sane person knows that in order to kill a zombie you go for the brain.

The High Court in Glasgow learned that Zhan had a history of mental problems and had been diagnosed in Canada with bipolar disorder with a psychotic feature, according to the BBC. He had stopped taking his anti-psychotic medication when he killed Davis, and he later told a forensic psychiatrist that he saw blood on peoples' faces.

The jury learned that Zhan, who was born in China and lived in Toronto, left Canada last September to travel across Europe. He said that "voices" had urged him to go to Glasgow.

16 Terrifying Scuba Accidents That Will Make You Think Twice About Diving

Although it offers a glimpse into a beautiful underwater world, scuba diving can be seriously dangerous if you're not careful. Some of the worst scuba accidents occur because of inexperienced divers making small mistakes. When diving, you always have to be alert and aware of your surroundings. The worst thing that you can do when you realize something is going wrong is to panic. That's practically a death sentence when you're scuba diving, so always be careful.

Even then, remaining calm might not be enough. Some of the divers who perished on this list were incredibly experienced and well-prepared, but still couldn't do anything to prevent their own deaths.

Below is a list of some of the worst cave diving accidents and wreck diving accidents that have occurred over the years. If this list teaches you one thing, it's to never take scuba diving lightly. It might be the last thing you ever do.

16 Terrifying Scuba Accidents That Will Make You Think Twice About Diving,

At Least Eight Divers Have Perished in Jacob's Well Due to False Exits and Blinding Silt

In Texas, a beautiful diving spot known as Jacob's Well has developed a reputation as one of the most dangerous places to dive in the country.  Although alluring, at least eight divers have lost their lives in Jacob's Well, with perhaps the worst being young Richard Patton. The Southwest Texas State University student was looking for a way to move from chamber to chamber in the cave, and ended up getting stuck in a false chimney that looked like a way out.

In parts of this underwater cave system, the floors are covered in fine gravel or silt and if a flipper so much as brushes the surface, the stirred-up sediment completely obscures a diver's vision, effectively blinding them.

Free-diver Diego Adame recorded his terrifying near-drowning in the caves, after he lost a flipper and had to jettison his weight belt in a dash for the surface.

Don Dibble, a nearby dive shop owner who is usually the one to pull the remains of dead divers out of the cave, attempted to seal of the depths of the well by installing a gate to stop people from going too deep. Shortly after, he found the gate destroyed with a note saying "You can't keep us out." Although extremely dangerous, it seems the cave is too alluring to stay away.

A Dive Group Gets Separated from Instructor, Spends 28 Hours Floating in Open Water

While on a tour in Bali, Indonesia, a group of seven people were separated from their boat while out diving. Bad weather was to blame, and the two instructors and five Japanese women floated in open water for 28 hours before eventually reaching a rocky islet where they were rescued two days later. During that harrowing ordeal, one of the women died, with her body being found 30 kilometers from the islet, while one of the instructors went missing in the open water.

The whole thing received even more scrutiny when it was discovered the company that took the group out on their dive was operating with an expired permit.

A Diver Panics and Succumbs to Nitrogen Narcosis, Removing His Own Breathing Apparatus

In April 2000, Russian diver Yuri Lipski geared up to dive at one of the world's most beautiful diving spots, the Blue Hole. Located on the east coast of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, the spot has become a must for divers who want to see the coral-lined, 394-foot-deep sink hole.

Lipski ended up dying at around the 300-foot mark. When you go that deep, your body is often subjected to nitrogen narcosis, a mental state that starts off similar to extreme drunkenness, but can eventually cause severe mental symptoms like hallucinations, paranoia, confusion, vertigo, and eventually death.

Lipski's body and found that the diver had been recording at the time of his death. The footage is on YouTube, and it's highly disturbing to watch the diver start to panic and thrash around. In the end, he removes his breathing apparatus and the recording stops.

Operator Error Takes the Life of an Experienced Diver

During one of his many dives at Dutch Springs recreation area, 38-year-old Eugene Fleysher accidentally drowned. He was found unresponsive in the water after ascending from around 30 feet. An autopsy report revealed that his equipment was poorly maintained and maladjusted, which only highlights the importance of always checking your gear before diving. Fleysher is just one of at least 16 people who have died in that same spot over the last 30 years.

Two Divers Perish During Dangerous Dive, Friends Go Back to Retrieve Their Bodies

In Norway, five friends embarked on a dangerous mission to explore a deep cave system in Norway. Going past the 100-meter mark, one of the divers got stuck in a passage and signaled for help. His friend in front of him turned back and did everything he could, but horrifically had to watch his friend die in front of his eyes. The accident caused another diver to panic - which is the worst thing you can do while diving - and he died, too.

After the survivors made it back, the authorities deemed a retrieval mission for the dead bodies to be too dangerous. But that didn't stop the original divers from planning a secret, extensive rescue mission, and seven weeks later, they went back into the dangerous cave system and successfully retrieved their fallen friends.

An Experienced Diver Vanishes in a Wrecked Ship Without a Trace

No matter how much experience you have diving, one small mistake or error can lead to your death. Diver Tom Pritchard was working on attaching a mooring line to the famed wreck of the Andrea Doria, which had come loose, when he suddenly vanished. Pritchard had close to 1,000 dives under his belt and the divers working with him had said Pritchard had a reputation for being incredibly careful and detail-oriented when it came to his dives.

In the end, it didn't matter. When the other divers surfaced, they immediately noticed Pritchard was not with them. The Coast Guard was called to sweep the area, but found nothing, and the captain of the ship that Pritchard was on had to make the difficult call to not let the divers go back down immediately to look for Pritchard. The Andrea Doria wreckage has always been dangerous and has claimed more than 15 lives due to its unstable nature. As his remains still haven't been found, we might never know whether Pritchard died from equipment failure, a medical emergency, or if some part of the ship simply collapsed around him.

A Russian Diver Is Cut in Half By a Boat Propeller

In what has got to be one of the most horrific ways to die, two divers met their tragic ends while diving in Thailand. Even though they were in the proper diving zone, upon surfacing, two men were hit by a passing speedboat, cutting one of them in half and sending the other man sinking below the surface. To survive the dangers of diving only to be cut in half by a reckless boat driver is a cruel fate, and just shows how careful you need to be of your surroundings at all times.

Father and Son Found Dead After Testing Their Christmas Gifts

A Florida father and his 15-year-old son got new scuba diving equipment for Christmas, and immediately went out to Eagles Nest Sink underwater caves in Weeki Wachee, Florida, to test it out. The father was an experienced diver, but the son was not certified yet, and both were not experienced when it came to cave diving. After entering the cave around 11 am on Christmas morning, their bodies were found that evening around 8:30 pm. At least six other divers have lost their lives in the same cave system.

A Diver Spends 10 Hours in Darkness with His Dead Friend More Than 900 Feet Under Water

Friends Don Shirley and Dave Shaw went diving almost 1,000 feet underwater in Bushman's Cave in South Africa when seeking to recover the remains of Deon Dreyer, who had died in the cave a decade before. More people have walked on the moon than have descended to such depths.

Video footage recovered later revealed that Shaw lost his light at depths and became entangled in the lines he was using to hoist Dreyer's body.

Meanwhile, an equipment failure led to Shirley accidentally receiving too much oxygen, which can have serious or even fatal effects. Then he developed a helium bubble that caused him to lose consciousness and let go of the guideline that told him how to get back out of the caves. He was spinning, disoriented, vomiting, searching for the line in total darkness, and not even knowing which was was up towards the surface.

Eventually Shirley righted himself, but he still had to wait in the water for another 10 hours, slowly ascending, because going up to the surface more quickly would have given him the bends, a possibly fatal condition when divers get "bubbles" of air in their blood from returning to the surface too fast.

However, Shaw's body eventually floated to the surface, attached to Dreyer's, so in death, he did achieve his purpose.

(A riveting and terrifying audio account of the story is available on from NPR's This American Life.)

A Diving Lesson Goes Horribly Wrong

In this harrowing tale, a boyfriend recounts how the love of his life almost died due to negligence from her instructors. While taking diving lessons, the man's girlfriend felt she was being harassed by the instructors, who wouldn't teach her the simple maneuvers she felt she needed to learn. During one of the dives, the girl's regulator (the device you hold in your mouth to breathe oxygen from your tank) was laden with sand, which caused malfunctions while she was underwater.

She took off her regulator and reached for her "octopus" (a back-up regulator) to help her breathe, but her instructor stopped her from doing so and forced her to try again with her own regulator. It caused the girl's stress to get even worse, and when the boyfriend tried to come help, the instructor pushed him away. As the girl was choking, the instructor tried shoving the regulator into her mouth, but missed and just hit her in the face instead. This shocked her and caused her to inhale water, so the boyfriend grabbed the girl and took her to the surface.

When they reached the top, the instructor started yelling at her that they needed to continue her training while she was literally throwing up water and begging for her life. She was hospitalized and was close to death for quite awhile. Miraculously, she pulled through, but now suffers from memory loss, depression, and a fear of water.

The 9 Craziest Pregnant Women in News Report History
Anybody who has another human being growing inside them for nine months has the right to go a little crazy. But these pregnant women have taken their crazy nine-month phase to a whole new level. From drunk-robbing a taco shop with a hammer to getting into a full-on fist fight at a parking lot to getting their fourth DUI, these pregnant maniacs prove that expecting a baby does not always lead to self-improvement. Here are the 9 craziest pregnant women in news report history.

So what's the craziest thing a pregnant woman has done? That remains to be seen but there's no doubt that if a pregnant woman does something bonkers, she'll end up on this list.
The 9 Craziest Pregnant Women in News Report History,

Pregnant Woman Gets Her FOURTH DUI
Seriously, if you know a pregnant woman, just offer to drive her home and if she's drinking, well, offer to drive her home.

Nicole VanNeil can't seem to kick the habit of drinking and then driving. Even when she's a pregnant mother-to-be. Only 22, VanNeil got her fourth DUI in 2008 while eight months pregnant. Her other three DUIs were all before she reached the legal age of drinking.

A video released by the Hillsborough County Sherriff's Office shows a visibly pregnant VanNeil failing miserably at a sobriety test.

The young woman also refused to give consent for blood and urine tests and when police searched her car, they found marijuana and drug paraphernalia hidden under her seat and the center console.

VanNeil was ultimately charged with DUI, possession of less than 20 grams of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. And she was given a badge that read "Hey Kid, I'm Sorry."

Drunk Pregnant Woman Robs a Taco Place with a Hammer for Crack Money (and a Taco)
This pregnant woman fails on all kinds of levels in this crime because 1) she's drunk, 2) she's drunk and tries to rob a Taco John's 3) she's drunk and tries to rob a Taco John's with A HAMMER and 4) she's drunk and tries to rob a Taco John's with a hammer and fails.

Julie Bailey was so inebriated that she couldn't even start the robbery before it came to an end.

Apparently, she had some trouble getting the hammer out of her shorts when she demanded the Taco John's teller to hand over some cash, and a soft shell taco.

... A soft shell taco. I hear that in some places they call soft shells "tortillas." Also, just ONE taco? You kinda have to hand it to this pregnant woman for displaying some amount of restraint here. I mean it's not like she was getting greedy.

After her major fumble she tried getting away, but the cops spotted her pink slippers from a mile away. The fact that she was holding a hammer didn't help either. Oh yeah, and this all happened when Bailey's roommate threatened to kick her out if she didn't come up with enough money to buy crack cocaine. Well, that's another fail.

The biggest fail here by far though, is the woman's baby daddy because 1) he tapped that.

18 Year Old Pregnant Woman Arrested for DUI (FIVE TIMES OVER the Legal Limit)
A pregnant teen in New Zealand was six months pregnant in January 2008 and decided to get piss drunk. Which we all know is a great idea when pregnant.

The 19-year-old and three of her friends were stopped by a cop in the small town of Te Puke (yes, we all get the irony, world) and she was arrested for DUI.

Her blood alcohol level was five times the legal limit - the point where most people actually lose their consciousness and sometimes die - but she was behind the wheel because all her other friends in the car were even more drunk or passed out and because, c'mon, she was drinking for two.

Pregnant Woman Steals and Spills
For Silvia Mendez-Perez, there couldn't have been a more convenient time to go into labor.

Right after being caught for shoplifting at a Meijer store on East Washington Street in Indianapolis, the 18-year-old pregnant teen's water broke and she was promptly taken to the Wishard Hospital. Saved by the fluid.

The police also found out that she and the 18-year-old man accompanying her both only had a Mexican Consulate identification, drove a car that was not registered under either of their name and did not have a valid driver's license.

Though she didn't quite get out of her jam completely because the police issued a warrant for her arrest after she delivered her baby, she did get a few minutes (hours) of freedom (pain) before being handcuffed and taken away.

Pregnant Woman Gets Family Arrested in Chuck E. Cheese
Contrary to popular belief, Chuck E. Cheese is actually more of a playground for adults than it is for children. Especially when flasks, fighting and pizza are involved.

Eighteen-year-old Juaneka Key was pregnant and at Chuck E. Cheese celebrating her 2-year-old son's birthday (yes, do the math, this girl should discover condoms). However, the party soon turned sour when a woman asked how long she was going to take at the vending machine.

Well, you KNOW you ain't gonna ask a pregnant lady that. Prompted, Key (the pregnant woman) unleashed all sorts of attitude and said she "was going to take her time." (Oh no she di'in't.) And soon, an argument developed between the two women and that's when Key called in the troops. Her step-dad, Terence Dickerson, punched the woman in the left eye and Key's mom, sister and boyfriend also joined in - family style. Soon all chaos broke out in the family pizzeria and the victim's family got involved and even other people who had no reason to get involved got involved.

Juaneka Key and all four of her family members ended up getting arrested on charges of Disorderly Conduct and Inciting a Riot. Don't worry the-little-boy-whose-birthday-we're-supposed-to-be-celebrating, one day you'll be old enough to ditch your parents at home.

2 Pregnant Women Throwdown in a Parking Lot
This is actually not very funny. It's just kind of ridiculous. But it happened. All in a Burger King parking lot in Oakland.

Before telling you what happens in this 10-minute Burger King anti-commercial, let's just explore this: TWO PREGNANT WOMEN. Seriously. What the hell? If you're pregnant, you 1) Shouldn't be getting into fist fights 2) Shouldn't be INCITING fist fights and 3) Probably shouldn't be eating at Burger King.

I know that some people are just too uneducated to deal with their rage issues or their anger appropriately, but when you're pregnant isn't there like an animal instinct that tells you not to get into fisticuffs for fear of losing what you've been working for for MONTHS on end? It's a human LIFE! I mean, if you're even if you're anti-choice or pro-choice, it's pretty s**tty when you lose 3 hours worth of work on an ESSAY, let alone a life. So why put this at risk?

Some people are just stupid... and highly entertaining on YouTube. So here's what happens:

The video starts off with a pregnant woman and her friend attacking another (allegedly) pregnant woman.

They take turns hitting and slapping her probably over a place in line at Burger King (which strangely is how a lot of these videos start), until she starts getting real feisty and kicking the pregnant woman in the belly.

They're pulled apart and the fight dies down for a bit.

The second round, though, comes back meaner and stronger with the victim of the first attack grabbing her friend and pounding it out on the pregnant girl. By then the pregnant has switched outfit (cuz her clothes were pulled off in the first fight) but she is still pretty pregnant. That doesn't mean a thing to the attackers though. They straight on throw her to the ground and hit her till there's no tomorrow. Wait, there is tomorrow. In a form of a dude who punches the pregnant girl in the face.

WHAT?!

WHO DOES THAT?!?! Oh, right, Oakland people who try to straighten things out in a Burger King parking lot do. Get your act together, Oakland.

Gosh... and this story isn't even OVER yet. After suffering a complete beatdown, the pregnant lady still has the gall to throw a high chair at the enemy posse's car. An old lady passing by sees this and starts lecturing the girl about how she should be more polite (obviously she missed out on the part where the girl should behave more humanely in general).

The pregnant girl ('cause she's inhumane) starts mouthing off to the old lady to which the old lady then busts a move. She throws a water bottle at the girl who (if nobody is paying attention) is PREGNANT.

All in all, an unpleasant group of people.

Pregnant Woman Stabs 3 People
A 7-months-pregnant woman in Massachusetts was arrested for stabbing three people with a knife in April 2010.

She took two of her three children to the Manton Heights Housing Project to visit their aunt when she busted a knife out from under her shirt Guy-with-the-cheap-mask-from-the-Scream-movies on three individuals. The victims, ages 37, 18 and 13, all suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

A good thing, because then they wouldn't have had to meet their attacker ever again. Why? Well get this, the woman/mother of three also worked as an emergency-room coordinator at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Her moonlighting as a crazy slasher was just something she did on the side.

Pregnant Woman Beats 6-Year-Old Neighbor
Sometimes a mother's love for her kid turns into violence on other people's kids. This is a sad one.

This was the case for 27-year-old Tiffany Nelson who was furious when she found out her son was being bullied by her 6-year-old neighbor Ian Fauncho. Now before we go on, let's count the age difference here. Twenty one, a twenty one year age difference. Ok.

Nelson then went over to Fauncho's house and attacked and beat him. She beat up the bully. All while being nine-months pregnant. She nearly knocked out the kid's two front teeth (which, to add to the tragedy of this story, were all he got for Christmas that year) and left him bruised and bleeding from the mouth.

Pregnant Woman Robs Domino's Pizza
Where was her boyfriend when she needed him? For all the guys with a pregnant girlfriend, or wife, don't ever let them satisfy their cravings on their own. 'Cause it can get dangerous. Seriously. Use this as a cautionary tale.

Seven-months-pregnant Rochelle Margaret Hailey obviously woke up alone in bed in June 2009 when she was struck with a huge Domino's pizza craving. She did what every hungry, unleashed pregnant woman would do when she needs food: she loaded up a gun and started walking.

According to investigation reports, Hailey, 21, went up to a Domino's Pizza assistant manager at 2:17AM and pointed a gun at her, demanding money.

My guess is they didn't have fresh pizza in the oven at that hour so money was the second best thing... to eat.

Anyway, Hailey cleaned out the restaurant's safe and ran. She didn't get far before the police caught up to her and recovered the stolen money.

She was charged with Armed Robbery, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime and Theft By Receiving Stolen Property.

And this is why you should always have frozen pizza handy. Or at least those awesome Lava Cakes that they have.

Wedding Planners Reveal Their Worst Horror Stories,

Father of the Bride Passes Out Naked
You know it's got to be hard for the father of the bride to give his daughter away. But one father took his pain a little too far. As a wedding planner explained on Brides, she had a "father of the bride who got so drunk that he couldn't make it through the reception." He then chose the closest room possible - the staff room - to pass out in. That'd be okay... maybe... except for the fact that he was completely naked when he passed out. The wedding planner said she "will never forget the hysterical scream from one innocent server who encountered the bride's naked dad when she went to find a basket for the dirty linens."
Little Girl Destroys the Cake
As one wedding planner shared with Planners Lounge, "At one wedding we planned, a little girl went up to the cake and swiped her fingers across the icing. The first few times it happened we didn’t know about it until the Maid of Honor called us on her cell phone and said, do you mind coming and doing something about this little girl, she’s ruining the cake. Sure enough we looked at the cake and there were little finger marks all along the bottom of the cake, literally ruining the design. When we approached the girls mother about it asking if there was something we could get little Sally to bid her time and occupy her the mother replied 'You can cut the cake.'"
Someone Let the Dogs Out
As wedding planner at Monsters and Critics shared, right as the bride was about to walk down the aisle, "two ginormous dogs – turned out they were Brazilian Mastiffs – came barreling through the open front doors of the villa, slid across the tile, bounced down the stairs into the great room, slid across the great room’s granite floor, and then got up and ran across the back porch out into the yard. They both jumped in the pool, and then got out and started rolling around on the lawn that resembled a rice paddy."
Servers Eat the Wedding Cake
As a wedding planner confessed on Kai Squared Events, "At one wedding I planned, the cake went missing after the bride and groom cut it. The bride soon asked where the cake was. Turns out the servers had taken it upon themselves to eat it! We cut the pieces smaller and the bride never knew."
The Groom Dumps the Bride
As a wedding planner described to Huffington Post, when she sat down with the couple the day before their wedding to fill out "the marriage license paperwork, the whole vibe at our table suddenly changed."  The groom then pushed the papers back and announced, “I’m not sure we’re ready to take this step. We’re not ready to get married yet.” The groom then proceeded to break up with the bride, right in front of the wedding planner!

AC Breaks at Sweaty Basement Wedding
As wedding planner Samantha Goldberg told NY Daily News, "One couple on a half-million-dollar budget could have held their wedding anywhere. But the groom insisted on having it in a huge underground, walk-out basement belonging to his parents. There was only one exit and 300 guests. I strongly recommended a tent in the backyard in case there was an emergency. But the groom and his family wouldn't listen. What happened? It turned out to be a blisteringly hot, rainy night. It got increasingly hot inside the basement and, eventually, at the end of the cocktail hour, the air conditioner blew. There was silence. Everyone was trying to eat by candlelight and suffering from heat exhaustion."
Dress Gets Ruined the Night Before the Wedding
As wedding planner Jo Ann Schwartz Woodward told the Houston Business Journal, the bride's dress was ruined the night before the ceremony. “Her mom came in from out of town and hung it on the sprinkler in the hotel room because it was the highest point in the room,” explained Woodward. “But, the pipes broke and all the mold and dirt that had been in those pipes for the last 20 years went all over the dress.” Luckily, she was able to solve the situation. “At the last minute, my husband and the designer called and said they soaked it in some special solution that made it look as good as new,” she said. “We blew it dry right before the wedding and no one knew it ever happened.”
Flower Girl Pees on Feet
Wedding planner Ashley Domingues shared her story with WPIC: "I was asked to mind the four-year-old flower girl during the photo session... She gave me about five seconds notice that she had to go to the washroom and then peed on my foot!"
Father of Bride Wants to Call Off the Wedding
During one wedding that Samantha Goldberg helped plan, "the bride's father said to his daughter, in a stage whisper: 'You know, it's not too late to back out, honey. Nobody will think badly of you.'" Goldberg went on to tell the NY Daily News that everyone in the church could hear the not-so-proud father's declaration. Not the best way to start off the celebrations!

Bride Needs Her Zit Popped
As Denise Georgiou of WeDDings Jubilee described on WPIC (The Wedding Planners Institute of Canada), she had to "pop a brides pimple that was on her back, where the dress buttoned up to: she was afraid it would pop during the wedding and mess up her dress..." EW!

Law Enforcement Agents Share Their Creepiest Stories
Whether a police officer, an FBI agent, or another figure in the world of law enforcement, dealing with criminals can lead to some strange, disturbing, and downright creepy experiences. Reddit users asked law enforcement to share some of their craziest tales, and many delivered in spades. Here are some highlights...
Law Enforcement Agents Share Their Creepiest Stories,

Horrendous Father

[WARNING: This story is very disturbing.]

"I live in a fairly small town, my dad was a cop for 10 years or so, my aunt works in the ER going on 11 years now, & at the time of this story one of my best friend's brother-in-law was an EMT. They are all involved in this sick tale...

"There was a call about a domestic dispute, then a 911 call from the same address from a woman who was just screaming & then cut off. Of course they sent all available units immediately. After a few officers had showed up, they reported the situation back & the Chief decided no female officers or EMTs should be allowed near the scene. It turned out a Hispanic man was on drugs & had a freak-out on his girlfriend, accusing her of cheating. He beat the shit out of her, broke several bones. He decided their three-month-old baby wasn't his, picked up the infant by his feet & gutted him with a box cutter. When the cops showed up he was beating on his girlfriend with a kitchen utensil while she huddled over the baby trying to shield him with her own body. They got him subdued, rushed the baby to the ER, tended to the wife in the ambulance out front, & sewed up several cuts of the man in the kitchen. The EMT tending to him was my friend's brother-in-law. The man was still high but coming down & saying a lot of disgusting things about his girlfriend, the EMT slammed his head into the refrigerator, warning him to stop talking. A sergeant was in the room, saw this & gave the EMT an approving nod. A few minutes later, the sergeant got fed up with the man's clearly unapologetic words & said "Do you hear that woman crying? She trusted you to take care of you, loved you enough to give you a son & look what you've done to them! She didn't cheat, you never let her leave the house so how could she? That little boy is your son, you could have been a father to him & raised him to be a great man, now you've taken that child's life. That woman, who loved you so much is out there weeping because she has just lost her son & her boyfriend, don't you care at all?!", the man then said that if that baby didn't want him to kill it then it should've died before it was born & that the woman deserved it because she was a "dumb bitch, cheating or not" & the sergeant shot the guy in the foot. My father witnessed all of this & later had to testify. My aunt said in the ER the baby was laying there & his intestines were literally laying next to him on the gurney, outside his body. Every single person who worked on that baby requested therapy afterward. The mom had some pretty bad internal bleeding but my aunt said the most disturbing thing was hearing her scream for her baby. She said in all her years in the ER she's never heard anyone scream like that.

"The mom & the baby actually both lived but the baby has some serious brain damage because he didn't get enough oxygen to the brain because of a punctured lung.

"The man is in prison, I know he got drug charges, weapons charges (unregistered guns were found in the home as well as more drugs), domestic battery, attempted murder & a few others I'm not sure of. I do know he has no possibility of parole & a long sentence but I'm not sure how long the sentence turned out to be.

"The sergeant & EMT were both fired, that was the hearing my dad had to testify in (among other officers & EMTs)."

Mother of the Demon

"This one time I went out on a call of a suspicious person at a house near where I was at. When I get there the guy tells me that someone knocked on his door and when he went to see who it was there was a woman standing in his driveway with some sort of child-sized doll with horns and it looked like all bloody and cut up. So he asked the woman, who was looking away from him, what she wanted. She turned around and told him 'It needs food' then started screaming at the top of her lungs and ran at him, so like a normal human being he slammed the door in her face and called the cops. I get there and there are well-defined claw marks on his door, there's also a good bit of blood, I supposed from her fingers. So I call it out and start the search on foot, I also had 2 or 3 units driving around the area to see if they can't find this chick.

"So I'm about a block away and we get another call that the woman is back at the guy's house, but in the back yard. So I run about a block back to the guy's house and bust into his backyard. The lights are out so I have my flashlight out and I'm looking around. I see the chick huddled in the corner next to a fucking evil-looking doll thing and I ask her if she's ok. She doesn't say anything. About this time one of my mobile units came back to the house and parked his unit where the headlights were shining on her so we could see how scary this chick looked. She had long black hair, her clothes were rags, she had no shoes, clearly homeless, and she kept whispering things to the doll.

"So my buddy and I approached and tried talking to her and she just kept whispering to the doll, couldn't understand what the hell she was saying so we decided to drag her ass out of there. The second we put hands on this chick she went berserk. Punching, kicking, slapping, all kinds of shit. So we're fighting with her trying to get her on the ground and she's not going down, this chick was strong as hell. Well, in the fight she somehow got away from us and was sitting in a crouched position with her head tilted to the side and making the creepiest growl/snarling sound I've ever heard. Then she screams at the top of her lungs and charged at us. So, my buddy straight-jabbed her in the face and knocked her clean out. We cuffed her and hauled her off to the hospital where she tested positive for PCP and various opiates. She was charged with battery of a peace officer, resisting arrest, and trespassing.

"Later she was institutionalized for some sort of mental disorder, not sure quite what it was, my department didn't have anything more to do with her after her booking into the jail."

A Clever Ruse Exposed
"...investigating a murder of a 19-year-old girl when fingerprints come back that the knife that she was killed with had HER fingerprints on them and wood residue trapped in them. Basically I had to tell her parents that she had killed herself by putting a knife in a partially closed door and ran backwards into it to make it look like a murder so she could be buried in a Catholic cemetery...the church actually dug the poor girl's body up and the parents had a body in their house for 2 days before they could rebury her."
The Sobering Otis
"Guy came into the jail on a DUI. Turned out it was like his fifth, so he wasn't getting out any time soon. He was okay for a few days and then started getting DTs bad. After a few days of mental health and medical saying 'keep an eye on him, it's just DTs,' he started going really nuts. He only spoke in gibberish and not to real people. He would piss, vomit, and sh*t everywhere but the toilet. He refused to wear clothes and would masturbate incessantly. Despite our concerns that he may have serious mental issues and repeatedly trying to get him admitted to the state hospital, we kept hearing the same response. 'Keep an eye on him, it's just DTs, he'll get over it.' Finally my supervisor had enough and called this guy's lawyer. She came down and we took her to the isolation cell. I opened the window on the door for her and she called out his name. Naked, covered in his own fluids and with a crazed look in his eye, he calmly picked up one of his turds and ate it like a Snickers bar before going back to masturbating. His lawyer gasped in horror, turned to me and my supervisor and said, 'I'll go talk to the judge right now.' Two hours later he was on a transport to the state mental hospital. I don't really understand the medical aspect, but apparently he was such an alcoholic that the withdrawal had done serious and permanent brain damage."

Christmas Eve Nightmare
"My grandpa was a big Irish cop who started his career in Minneapolis in the mid-1950s. He always has the best stories to tell, but the one unexplainable one he tells me is that he got a call during Christmas Eve to a house with six bodies in it. Being the first responder, he speeds his way there and gets to the house. He walks in, gun drawn, only to find a family that looked like everybody had just had a long night and dozed off until he gets no response trying to wake them. He searches the rest of the house only to find a young teen girl in the bathtub with a single tear run down her cheek. Everybody seemed to have mysteriously died at once without any known cause and he never found out what it was."
Not the Best Way to Go Out
"Literally two days ago we had a man dead, swinging from the ceiling (on a sex swing) with electrical nipple clamps, buttered, body and a knitting needle up his penis. The worst part, he was pushing 70 years and discovered by his 10-year-old granddaughter. How the f*ck do you erase that image?!"
Gruesome Accident

"UK here. Not a policeman but my brother is and I heard this story from him (though it was all over the local news as well... just without the gore). He wasn't the attending officer on the case but arrived on the scene as the bodies were being moved. (I actually passed the scene on my way to work the day it happened as well, though at that time the wreck was being hauled away)... So, just the fine details are third-party, in effect.

"It's a rather gruesome story so... read at your own risk.

"A few years back in our local town, a couple of joyriders had stolen a car. The police gave chase but had to pull back due to the speeds involved. (They got clocked at 130 miles per hour through a residential area.) The obvious happened and about three miles from where the police fell back, they managed to hit a wall or lamppost or something and kill themselves instantly.

"Upon arriving at the scene, the attending officer discovered the driver's lower legs and feet had been pushed up due to the impact and his shin bone had gone through his jaw and up through his skull. Apparently it looked like he had a foot attached to his chin. The passenger, however, looked untouched and seemed to be unconscious... until they tried to move him and discovered most of the bones in his body had been shattered. He sort of... folded backwards when the officer tried to pull him out for first aid. He then started to... compress, squish and implode into himself in the car seat."

A Most Bizarre Abduction

"My old roommate's dad was a former Naval Officer and then FBI agent. 20 years in the Navy and 12-15 years or so in the FBI.

"One of his strangest stories was from his FBI days. I'll paraphrase it below:

"A kidnapping case, this girl disappeared from her grandparents' RV sometime between like 5pm and midnight. They were up front, next thing they know, she's gone. She was supposed to be sleeping in the back. One stop at a rest stop, then they were in stop-and-go traffic, so they figure she must have popped out the door at some point. This is near the California/Nevada border. So we meet them, talk to them, this is within about a day or so and the girl's still missing, no sign of her. She was 15.

"Local PD theory is she ran off because she's 15 and wants to get away from her lame grandparents for the summer. But there's a busted window (glass inside the vehicle) so we're treating it like a possible kidnapped person.

"After a few hours, there's a couple different theories on the case. One is that she ran off, another that she got snatched. Nobody's seen the girl in almost two days now, and disappearing in the desert for a young girl is tough.

"Next thing you know, we get a phone call - naked girl, lost and confused, picked up by some trucker on a two-lane road out there called Nipton. Runs into I-15 between Barstow and Vegas somewhere. Right near the border. Matches our description. Me and three other guys head out there to meet with the Sheriff who's got her. Turns out she's our girl. She's fine. No rape. No bruises. No exposure. Nothing. Completely healthy. Completely fine. Even cleaned like she took a shower. Won't tell us a damned thing. Doesn't remember a damned thing.

"According to her, one minute she's in the RV, the next she's naked walking down the side of the road in 100-degree heat. We talked to her for two hours while her grandparents headed out to pick her up. We had our social services lady talk to her - nothing. I've seen people hiding things - she wasn't hiding anything. She honestly didn't remember.

"Damndest thing. Anyway, girl was found, she was fine, so we turned it back over to Local PD to figure out what happened and determine if charges were pressed and all. I kept in touch with a guy I knew there because I was curious and we were in a fantasy football league. A few months later he tells me the parents sent the girl to a therapist to look for 'repressed memories' to make sure she wasn't raped or something. Therapist says she seems fine, but honestly has no recollection of her time at all, and doesn't think there's any point to delving much further since she has no symptoms and is largely more confused by the reaction than the event.

"So to this day, we've got a busted RV window with glass on the inside, likely from a moving RV on a jampacked freeway, likely in broad or lightly fading sunlight, with zero witnesses. A 15-year-old girl gets out, or is taken out, and is taken somewhere safe nearby for almost two days, and then is stripped naked without being touched sexually, cleaned up, and deposited on the side of a separate road a few miles away. She didn't have a drug in her system that we could detect. She remembers nothing at all. Nobody knows what happened to her clothes or anything.

"Been almost 20 years since this happened, and I can't figure out what the hell went on with that girl. Still bugs me at night that I have no way to explain it aside from 'She lied the whole time,' but I know liars, and I'd bet money she wasn't lying at all."

The Disturbance That Wasn't
"Not my story, but a good friend of mine was the youngest recruit to pass police training etc. in the area for a long time. At 19, he was fresh onto the service. I went for a pint with him a week later and you could tell he'd 'seen things' so I asked him what it was like.

"...he told me about this one where they were called to a domestic. They got to the house and opened the door, instantly a whole load of sewer rats (not pet rats) flooded out, and there was no one home. The lights were on, the TV was on (quiet), and the loud voices they heard arguing were just gone. The only life there were the rats that ran out of the house. They searched the house, every nook and cranny, and found no one. He and his partner for the evening stayed around a while and waited to see if anyone came home, but after a few hours no one came, the neighbours couldn't even explain it. So they left. A few minutes later they got called to the same address again by a different person stating there's a pretty heated domestic going on. This time they brought the dog squad to find people, but again, the house was deserted. He said the freakiest thing was that the toilet had blatantly just been flushed when they got there as the cistern was filling, and the kettle was now boiling. The dogs found nothing as well. To this day he doesn't know what the fuck went on."

Scarecrow
"Dispatch gets a call from an older couple reporting there's a man standing in their backyard. It's later in the evening and obviously the older couple is freaked out a bit. Several officers show up including my friend [who is a cop] and split into two groups heading around either side of the house. As they emerge in the backyard, guns drawn, they see the suspect and promptly order him to get on the f*cking ground, face first, hands behind his head. As they draw closer he's not responding and they realize he hasn't moved at all. Rewind 2 hours, the suspect had robbed a 7-11 or something like that down the road and taken off on foot. As he entered the neighborhood he tried to cut through this older couple's backyard. When he went to hop the fence in the back he slipped and impaled himself on a fence post. He couldn't pull himself off it and his own body weight slowly drove him down the post. It had entered at his groin and went straight up to his shoulder. He was literally a human scarecrow."

12 Shockingly True Munchausen by Proxy Stories

Imagine pretending to be sick or injured just to receive attention. While it seems strange, there's actually a psychiatric disorder called Munchausen syndrome that describes people who do just that. And, in some cases, the person with Munchausen inflicts injury or illness on someone else - often a child - for the same reasons.

Munchausen by proxy is a sadistic disorder that causes caregivers to hurt others for their own benefit. Because the perpetrators are frequently mothers, it is usually a long time before doctors or authorities suspect anything at all. Although the motive is generally to elicit emotional sympathy and attention - not murder - there are many true stories of Munchausen by proxy that end in death.

These true Munchausen by proxy cases are horrifying and sad, and these stories can seriously mess with your head.

12 Shockingly True Munchausen by Proxy Stories,

Blanca Montano: Mom Turned Monster

Blanca Montano was only 21 when she was arrested for harming her two children. In February 2011, she had both kids admitted into an Arizona hospital. Soon, Montano’s son drastically improved and was released. Her newborn daughter, however, only became sicker over the course of her hospital stay. She was diagnosed with an array of rare conditions that worsened, nurses noticed, after time spent alone with Montano.

Police were alerted of the hospitals suspicions, and an investigation revealed that Montano had intentionally poisoned her daughter, causing the infections in order to garner attention and sympathy.

Once Montano and her child were separated, the infant’s condition improved drastically. Montano was arrested for child abuse.

Cancer, Unborn Twins, And Cystic Fibrosis: Hope Ybarra's Hopeless Lies

Hope Ybarra, a former chemist, was a mother of three suffering from her third bout with cancer. She blogged about her illness as well as her daughter's terminal cystic fibrosis. So when Ybarra became pregnant with twins and subsequently lost them 5 months into the pregnancy, the family and their community were absolutely wrought with grief.

It wasn’t until the police got involved that the truth began spilling out in massive, sadistic waves: Hope was clear of any and all cancer, her daughter did not suffer from cystic fibrosis, and there was never a pregnancy with twins. Ybarra had poisoned her child with pathogens, tampered with sweat tests to ensure the medical results she wanted, and even periodically drained the child’s blood. This last step caused the most bodily harm and, on one occasion, caused her daughter to go into anaphylactic shock.

Hope was tried and convicted of child abuse and sentenced to eight years in prison.

Beverley Allitt: Notorious Night Nurse

Beverley Allitt, better known as the Angel of Death, is one of the most notorious female serial killers of all time.

Allitt trained as a nurse in England where her reputation was less than pristine. She was frequently absent as a result of a string of “illnesses," and was once caught smearing feces on the walls of a nursing home. She later worked in the children’s ward at Grantham and Kesteven Hospital in Lincolnshire. It was during this time Allitt began abusing her patients.

Once her killing spree began she took the lives of three patients in only a month, including seven-month-old Liam Taylor and 11-year old Timothy Hardwick, a cerebral palsy patient. Allitt was overlooked until two more children were murdered and another nine abused under her watch.

Allitt was found guilty of murder and attempted murder. She is serving 13 life sentences - the most severe sentence ever given to a woman.

Leslie Wilfred and Her Endless Lies

In 2008, Leslie Wilfred called her husband Chris from a Georgia hospital room with news that their twins were stillborn five months into Leslie's pregnancy. A service was held for the twins with photos of their ultrasounds and two matching teddy bear-shaped urns. Family and friends gathered to mourn and show their support.

Leslie and Chris Wilfred had four children from previous relationships, all of whom suffered from a slew of psychological and medical conditions, according to their parents. Their drama-filled history raised suspicions with the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services. It all came to a head after the babies' deaths and resulted in a full-blown investigation.

While filing through her computer, police discovered Wilfred had ordered the urns five days before the “death” of her children. Investigators also discovered that Wilfred had her tubes tied before marrying Chris, she was never pregnant with twins, and her other claims made about her actual children's terminal health issues were not true.

Wilfred was sentenced to eight years in prison and 30 years of probation for child abuse.

Lacey Spears Found Guilty of Poisoning Son With Salt

Mommy blogger Lacey Spears went to prison for murdering her five-year-old son with fatal levels of sodium.

Spears was giving her son high levels of sodium through a feeding tube that caused him to become very sick. She said her son Garnett had numerous illnesses and documented his medical setbacks and progress on a blog called "Garnett's Journey." During this time, he was in and out of 20 different medical facilities, none of which were given information about Garnett's other hospital visits.

Then, in 2014, the sodium reached such a high level, Garnett was placed on a life flight to another hospital. Unfortunately, his brain suffered irreparable swelling and he was pronounced brain dead on January 23, 2014.

Suspicions about Spears arose among the medical personnel. They launched an investigation and searched her home. Police found medicine bottles sitting behind a canister of salt, and later recovered two bags of breast milk that Spears used to feed Garnett through his feeding tube with fatal levels of sodium in them.

She was found guilty of depraved-indifference murder of a child and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Marybeth Tinning - The Deadliest Case of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy Ever

Marybeth Tinning had eight biological children and one adopted son. None of these kids lived past the age of four.

Although prosecutors are convinced Tinning murdered several - if not all - of her children, she was only convicted of murdering her youngest daughter, whom she smothered with a pillow on December 20, 1985.

In a parole board meeting she said she did not murder the others but that they died from sudden infant death syndrome. The only explanation she provided to the board was that she was so traumatized by the death of her other babies, she was convinced her youngest was dying too, so she killed her instead.

Tinning is serving 20 years to life at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility.

Lisa Hayden-Johnson and "The Sickest Child in England"

Not only did Lisa Hayden-Johnson get the empathy and support that came with having a sick child, she also received monetary benefits. Hayden-Johnson didn't turn down any of the lavish gifts offered to her for having "the most ill child in Britain." After her son was born prematurely, Hayden-Johnson began forcing him into a wheelchair for his "cystic fibrosis," feeding him through a tube in order to avoid triggering his "life-threatening allergies," and adding glucose to his urine to convince doctors his "diabetes."

Meanwhile, she was invited to meet with royalty at a charity event for critically ill children, collected thousands in disability payments each month, and received free tickets, vacations, and charitable cash donations. That all came crashing down when doctors became suspicious of Hayden-Johnson and demanded her son receive further testing to determine the root of his various illnesses. Hayden-Johnson tried to put off the testing by saying she was sexually assaulted, but eventually it was discovered it was all a big sham.

After six years of abuse and lies, Hayden-Johnson was tried and convicted of child abuse and perverting the cause of justice in October 2009. She served 39 months in prison.

Dee Dee Blancharde: A Munchausen Mother Murdered

Like the others on this list, Dee Dee Blancharde played the part of a sweet and devoted mother to her sickly teenage daughter, Gypsy. That is, until a status update appeared on Blancharde's Facebook page that read "That b*tch is dead!" and Blancharde was found murdered in her home.

It turned out her teenage daughter Gypsy was actually a healthy 23-year-old woman who said her mother had forced her to play ill. In 2015, Gypsy snapped and met a man online named Nick Godejohn who agreed to kill her mother.

Gypsy was convicted of murder and given the minimum sentence of 10 years.

Kathy Bush's Daughter Says She Never Abused Her

Jennifer Bush, the daughter of Kathy Bush, endured more than 40 medical procedures and 200-plus hospital visits in the early '90s between the ages of two and eight. Her mother insisted she was seriously ill and needed to be fed through a tube. Medical personal began suspecting that Bush had tampered with her daughter's medications and proceeded to launch a full investigation.

In 1999, Kathy Bush was found guilty of child abuse and sentenced to five years in prison - three of which she served. Despite having two brothers and a father, Jennifer was placed in foster care, an experience she describes as "traumatic." Nineteen years later, Jennifer and her family - including her mother - have been reunited. She insists that her mother never abused her.

Munchausen Mother of Four Arrested

Nurses at two separate hospitals in England started raising suspicion about a mother of four after finding two sets of DNA in her daughter's urine samples.

Although the initial test results did not find the child suffered from any kidney issues, each of her urine samples had blood in them. This raised concerns among doctors and eventually resulted in the child undergoing a painful and risky procedure to determine the status of her kidneys. The results found that nothing was wrong.

Suspicious, the nurses searched the room and found a cup of blood left behind by the mother and two syringes of blood in the toilet. As it turned out, she was placing her own blood in the samples, contaminating the results - which explained the two sets of related DNA.

The mother eventually pled guilty to willfully assaulting, ill-treating, and neglecting a child in a manner likely to cause suffering or injury.

Prison Guards Describe the Most Disturbing Things They Saw,

Creepiest Prison Ever

"I work at a medium security facility as a correctional officer and I have friends at other prisons. You get the odd 'I'll kill you and your family' blah blah blah . . . [but]

"There is one guy at my place that has a constant thousand-yard stare. It's not what he says, it's how he says it... even a simple "yeah...ok" coming from him makes you think twice about your next move.

"There is an apparent ghost that haunts our place as well. I've never seen him but it's suppose to be a con that died years ago.

"Other than that nothing really comes to mind."

Brutal Attack

"I was an officer at a medium security prison. I witnessed a fight between an MS13 member and a Blood. MS13 is as brutal as they come. The MS13 member knocked out the Blood, then attempted to pull his eyes from their socket. I was on the other side of a barbed-wire fence and couldn't intervene. I had to watch until someone else arrived, which was quick enough to save the Blood's life. I don't remember seeing the Blood come back after that trip to the hospital.

"That's the closest I've ever been to seeing someone get murdered. If the tower officer had a clean shot, I'm sure there would've been one less MS13 member."

Resident Ghost
"I don't expect people to believe me, but I know what I saw. It was about 2:00am, I was sitting at my desk and I looked up because I saw a person walk across the range into the shower area, which is impossible because I was the only officer in there and all the inmates were locked down. Freaked me out so I got up to make a round. There was a Native American inmate in the cell directly adjacent to the shower that saw it also. He asked me if I just saw what he saw. I told him yes and we both kind of chuckled. The ghost or whatever you want to call it, is that of a Native American that had hung himself in that housing unit decades earlier. He tends to appear to other Natives when they are in the unit. Separate incident but same ghost also appeared to another young native inmate who told me how this 'native dude' was sitting on the end of his bed one night just looking at him. I had never told this inmate about the ghost."
Horrifying Transformation
"I had a woman recently who was so convinced she was innocent of driving without a license that she began scratching and biting her arms to draw blood so she could be seen by our crisis group so she'd have a chance at leaving to one of the mental faculties. She faked multiple seizures, asthma attacks, and rape claims all WHILE we were restraining her to prevent her from killing herself. Her voice eventually went out and she started sounding a lot like a demon from hell. That was just last week, though."
NSFW and Upsetting Attacks

**WARNING: Disturbing Content**

"I worked at a county jail for two years, and most of the inmates were waiting to go to the penitentiary. One day, a guy entered my unit, and started bragging on how he raped a girl. Well, to find out, it was another inmate's younger sister. I remember hearing a yelling coming out of an inmate's cell during their activity time, so I called a code 4 (disturbance) and ran over to see what was going on. Inmate 1 (the rapist) was held down by three other inmates, and Inmate 2 (the victim's brother) had his arm all the way down to his elbow up the other guys ass.

"After we separated them, and Inmate 2 was moved to Administrative Segregation (solitary), I finally got a chance to ask why did he do that specifically. His response was, and I quote, "Man, that muthaf*cka was a mark b*tch. Like some Muppet ass nig**, so I gave the Muppets a new character."

"I will never forget what I saw that day..."

From Hell

"This probably isn't my best story but it's my favorite. Inmate hadn't showered in weeks. She smelled terrible. She was in secured housing so her bunkie had been making complaints. After a certain amount of time, lack of hygiene is a disciplinary violation. She goes to confinement for a forced shower.

"I'm fairly new in the department at this time so of course I get the grunt work. I have to go to her locker, retrieve her property, and inventory it for storage. She refuses to give us the lock combination so we have to use the bolt cutters. Finally get it open and it's filthy. She has a bag of wet dirty clothes. I double glove up at this point. The clothes are mildewed. I take the bag of clothes out and find used maxi pads all over her property. At the time I was in complete shock but I couldn't show it. There were roaches coming out of the locker as I pulled more stuff out. Just filthy.

"I finally get to her paperwork. I was sure that the worst was behind me. Nope. The first folder is full of demonic horned figures. Pages and pages of them. Real grisly pictures. Decapitations, torture, and tons of blood. I thought that these figures were just scribbled in for color but after I looked closely, it was officers' names written hundreds of times within these characters. Each character was an officer. Each "dead" figure was a staff member that was no longer there. I've had inmates threaten to kill me, inmates tell me my address, my license plate number and where I'm from. Still to this day that creepy old woman is the creepiest thing I've ever dealt with."

Grisly Suicide and Murder

"Worst thing I've seen is a two-way tie.

"Had an inmate kill himself by taking apart a razor and bending it around the end of a pen and going at the side of his neck until he passed out. Was found within 10 minutes of it happening and there was blood all over.

"The other one was when an inmate was murdered in a yard. He was bench pressing and two inmates held the bar on top of him while a third inmate dropped a heavy dumbbell on his forehead. It dented from just above his eyebrows to his hairline in a solid inch and a half, was all over but the twitching after that."

Almost Like Hannibal Lecter
"Worked in a lock-down for violent sex offenders for way too long. Got told very calmly 'as soon as you're alone and there's no one to save you, I'm going to f*ck you to death.' What's scarier though is the really manipulative guys will listen in on you constantly and memorize any bit of personal information you let slip. Then when they want something they'll come to you like they know you and start telling you stuff about your life that you don't realize they've pieced together. Also prisoners have access to public records so as soon as they know your name they'll put on orders for every bit of info they can."
Disturbing Evidence
"I've known two unrelated inmates who got hold of their crime scene pictures as part of their legal proceeding. Their kick was to call unsuspecting staff to their cell door's window and flash them their dead victim pictures. One of them straight up told me he enjoyed seeing the horror in our eyes as we looked at their handiwork."
Hey CO, Check This Out...
"I work at a prison. The worst thing I've ever had happen to me when I was doing a round is an inmate in his cell stopped me and said 'Hey, CO [correctional officer], check this out,' then slit his throat with a razor blade."

The Best Scary Movies Based on True Stories
It is said that the truth is stranger than fiction. Well, in the case of scary movies, there is probably a lot more horrifying truth than one would expect. Many of the scariest movies were inspired by real events - which, if nothing else, is something we should all lose a little bit of sleep over. This is a list of the best scary movies based on true stories to determine just what horrifyingly true story is the most teeth-chattering, nightmare-inducing, sleep-with-a-nightlight-for-the-rest-of-your-life cinematic masterpiece. So, what is the best scary movie based on a true story?

Here you'll find some of horror's (and cinema's) undisputed masterminds all drawing on real-world events to inspire some of their finest work. Heavyweights like Steven Spielberg, the "Master of Suspense" Wes Craven, and Alfred Hitchcock have all drawn from real headlines to create some of their most famous films.

There are many factors to consider here. Comparing a film up against another film (even in the same genre) can feel like comparing apples and oranges. So, it's on you, Ranker voters. Does it matter how closely the film adheres to the story that it was inspired by, like in a biopic like Dahmer? Or is it more important that the movie be genuinely, undeniably, amazing even though it strays a bit from its inspiration? Because maybe Jaws and Psycho win that battle.

These are all almost impossibly tough calls, and there are a lot of classics to sift through... but isn't that what makes this fun? Vote up the top scary movies inspired by true events, and click Rerank to make a list of your own.

Ballygally Castle
The Location

In North Ireland, overlooking the sea, is the picturesque Ballygally Castle. The castle was built in 1625 by Lord James Shaw of Scotland, who had rented the land from the Earl of Antrim. The home remained in the Shaw family until the 19th Century, when it was sold by James Shaw's descendant, William Shaw. Today, it is operated as a hotel by Hastings Hotel Group. It holds the distinction of being the only occupied building from the 17th Century in Northern Ireland.

The Legend

Perhaps the most notable ghostly "resident" of the castle is Lady Isobel Shaw, the wife of Lord James Shaw. After Lady Shaw gave birth to a boy - the prized male heir for Lord Shaw - her husband locked her away in the castle's tower, separating mother from child. While attempting to escape and steal back her baby, Lady Shaw allegedly fell to her death from the tower. Today, she is believed to wander the hallways, occasionally knocking on the doors to random rooms, looking for her child. (A plaque in the hotel notes her presence but refers to Lady Shaw as a "friendly spirit.")

Madame Nixon (another former resident), also appears from time to time in the castle, wandering around in a silk dress. There is a room in the castle, located within the turret, that is locally known as "The Ghost Room" and isn't rented out to guests.

Numerous other ghost stories have circulated relating to the castle. One former owner claims to have once set up an elaborate dinner party in an area known as "The Dungeon Room" only to return and find the table in complete disarray. Others have said that, due to all the battles that have taken place on or near the grounds, that the ghosts of dead soldiers still appear to visitors on the property. A variety of supposed "mediums" have detected restless spirits in various points in the castle as well, with one notably claiming that the hotel had more ghosts occupying its rooms than guests.

But Is It True?

The place certainly sees creepy. Here's a shot of the "Ghost Room":

Furthermore, former owner Olga Henry - herself a skeptic when it comes to hauntings - has some pretty creepy anecdotes about guests who received considerable scares. One in particular concerns a guest staying alone, who felt the presence and even heard the noises of children in his room.

But alas, it seems that the "Ghost Room" may in fact just be a gimmick. Several bloggers and writers have stayed in the room and none have actually observed anything supernatural. (Some have also noted that the Ghost Room is surprisingly modern, wired for electricity and not even locked away from the rest of the hotel, just the sort of precautions you'd take if there were actually ghosts around.)
Blickling Hall
The Location

BRIEF HISTORY LESSON: Anne Boleyn was the second wife of King Henry VIII of England. Henry grew displeased with her after she failed to produce a male heir (though she did give birth to a daughter, the future Queen Elizabeth). Henry decided he'd prefer to be with his new mistress, Anne Seymour, so he had Boleyn arrested and locked up in the Tower of London. It was there she was executed for high treason on May 19, 1536, and then buried. Blickling Hall in Norfolk was the home of the Boleyn Family from 1499 to 1507.

The Legend

The circumstances surrounding Boleyn's death have made her a key figure of fascination in British history. Almost immediately after her execution, stories of her practising witchcraft and even laughing in the face of death started to spread. Even the Governor of the Tower of London, present at her execution, later said "this lady had much joy and pleasure in death."

Each year on May 19, it's said that a headless Anne Boleyn visits Blickling Hall. Apparently, she's a nostalgic ghost. According to local legend, Anne arrives each year in a carriage, led by a headless horseman. Though it's not exactly known where the head of the horseman lies, Anne carries her detached skull along with her for the ride. Anne's brother, Lord Rochford, and her father, Thomas Boleyn, are also thought to haunt the grounds.

But Is It True?

There are so many stories about Anne Boleyn's ghost appearing in various spots all over England, it's a bit difficult to take any of them too seriously. For example, on Christmas, Anne appears yearly in Kent near the spot where she first met and was courted by King Henry, as well as in Essex near Rochford Hall, where she spent considerable time as a girl. Either Anne is seriously committed to being a ghost... or English people are just fascinated by her and thus "see" her everywhere.
Borley Rectory
The Location

Borley is a small town in Essex, England, near the border with Suffolk on the Eastern Coast of the country. In 1863, the location was home to a church (also called Borley) which had a large rectory on the grounds. In 1863, Reverend Henry Dawson Ellis Bull destroyed all remnants of the previous rectory and had his own home built next to the Borley Church, which was to be his parish. Already when the Reverend Bull had his home built, there had been rumors of a ghost on the property, originally of a sad, dead nun who still wandered the grounds, weeping. According to most accounts, there had been some manner of church building - including monasteries - on the site since the 12th or 13th centuries.

The Legend

The origin of the "Nun's Walk" story dates back to the site's original purpose, as a monastery. Supposedly, a monk from the monastery carried on an affair with a nun from a nearby convent. When the couple were found out, the monk was killed and the nun walled up inside the rectory's familiar red brick walls.

Reverend Bull was himself fascinated by the ghost nun story, and purposefully set up his home so he could look out over the area she was said to walk at night. Several sightings - both from guests, Reverend Bull's own family, and servants - from this time were reported of the sorrowful ghost nun haunting the grounds.

After Reverend Bull died, his position was taken up by Reverend Eric Smith, who lived at the Borley Rectory with his wife. Hearing about the area's reputation, the couple invited then-noted paranormal investigator Harry Price to inspect the rectory. Price reportedly discovered a great deal of paranormal activity, of the violent, chaotic sort we'd now associate with a poltergeist. Reverend Smith and his wife moved out of the rectory after a brief 2 years.

The next Reverend to move in was Lionel Foyster, who arrived at the rectory with his beautiful wife, Marianne. The spirit of the rectory appears to have taken a liking for Marianne, singling her out for attention and allegedly even writing messages on the walls for her. (One example: "Marianne please help get.")

Foyster arranged then to have the home exorcized of evil spirits, which is said to have worked for a time. But soon enough, the vengeful spirits returned, attacking Foyster's son, turning communion wine to ink and other horrors. The Foyster family moved out of the rectory shortly after.

Harry Price, still intrigued by the strange phenomenon happening at the rectory, purchased it himself in 1937 and began a series of tests and experiments meant to determine exactly what was happening at Borley Rectory. A year later, Price held a seance, during which a spirit delivered a prophecy. The Rectory would burn down that very night, and the skeleton of the dead nun held in its walls would be found. This did not, in fact, happen, but Borley Rectory did burn down a scant 11 months later. Price returned to inspect the grounds and claims to have found a jawbone that could have belonged to a nun.

But Is It True?

Harry Price's "scientific team" logged a large amount of research and observations relating to their time spent at Borley Rectory, and a number of photographs of spirits came out of the period.

As well, a number of the original individuals involved in the Borley legends spoke publicly about their experiences, including Marianne, who suspected that some of the actions credited to the Borley ghost were probably hoaxes or fakes, but still maintained that the house was likely haunted.

It's also extremely unlikely that the "origin story" about the ghost nun is accurate, and by the 1930s, this version of events had already been widely discredited. (It's believed to have come from a popular novel of the time by H. Rider Haggard.) This obviously hurts the believability of all the later stories, as the un-dead nun trapped forever in the rectory walls seemed to have been the original source of all the other legends.

Finally, though a series of exorcisms were undertaken, and Price even found the jawbone amidst the rubble and gave it a proper Christian burial, sightings of ghosts around where the rectory stood continue to this day. What more could this ghost possibly want after centuries of wandering around aimlessly?
Edinburgh Castle

The Location

The Edinburgh Castle in Scotland that sits atop the famous volcanic "Castle Rock" has been continuously occupied since about the 9th Century BC. The first royal castle on the site was constructed by King David I in the 12th Century, and it remained the seat of the Scottish King until the ascension of James VI to the throne of England in 1603. After that, it remained an essential Scottish fortress and military stronghold, and played a part in numerous important historical battles. Today, the site is Scotland's most popular paid tourist attraction, and one of the most iconic images of the country.

The Legend

Or, I should say, "The Legends." Because of the location's key significance in Scottish history, there are too many ghost stories circulating about the place to even compress into anything less than an essay. And I have THINGS to do.

So in brief...

- A ghost "drummer" can be heard throughout the castle whenever it is about to be attacked. (Obviously, this hasn't happened in a while...) Prior to the 1650 siege of the castle by Cromwell's forces, the drummer was spotted and identified as the ghost of a headless boy.
- The dungeons, where numerous prisoners were held and tortured, are thought to be populated by some restless spirits. One spirit, a prisoner in the dungeons during his life time, is said to have attempted to escape in a wheelbarrow full of dung, only to perish on the craggy rocks below when the barrow was emptied off of the cliffside. Today, it's thought that he still haunts the castle, causing visitors to sense his presence and smell the faint residue of... yeah, dung.

But Is It True?

Well, probably not.

BUT STILL, there's more evidence pointing towards Edinburgh Castle being haunted than almost any other place on Earth. In 2001, Dr Richard Wiseman conducted a study in the castle, testing the reactions of people who had never before heard the legends of its haunting to exploring the castle. 51% of the subjects reported experiencing something supernatural in areas that were previously identified as "haunted." In other areas, only 35% of subjects reported supernatural goings-on. Among the reports were strange light effects and the sensation of something tugging at your clothes.

Raynham Hall
The Location

Construction on Raynham Hall began in Norfolk, England, in 1613, at the behest of Sir Roger Townshend, an influential member of English Parliament. Sir Roger had been touring around Europe and had the home built in a popular Italian style that would become the rage in England many years later, making Raynham Hall notably ahead of its time, and infamous as one of the finest stately country homes in the area.

The home is also notable for the extensive work done on the house by famous English architect, landscaper and designer William Kent. Many of Kent's finest pieces - along with a variety of other artwork he hand-picked for Raynham - can still be found in the home to this day.

The Legend

One of Sir Roger's descendants, Charles Townsend, married a woman named Dorothy Walpole in 1712. Dorothy had a reputation as being promiscuous, which may have fueled some of the strange rumors surrounding her death in 1726. It is rumored that Lord Townsend actually faked his wife's death, so that he could imprison her in the home, possibly as retribution for an infidelity or out of anger after discovering she had been previously involved with a rival. Unable to see her children, leave the room, or eat, she died in that room, wearing a brown satin dress.

The first sighting of The Brown Lady took place at Christmas in 1835, where a guest of the house, Colonel Loftus, met with the Brown Lady on his way back to his room of an evening. He said she was wearing a brown satin dress and seemed to glow from behind her empty eye sockets. His account led to many of the house servants leaving the house immediately, refusing to return.

Numerous notable figures from British history claim to have seen The Brown Lady while staying in Raynham Hall. One of the first and most infamous encounters happened to King George IV when he stayed in one of the home's state rooms. He claims to have woken up to find the deathly pale lady hovering right next to his bed. Apparently, the king was so frightened that he refused to remain in the home any longer, and left immediately.

The ghost of Dolly is thought to still walk up and down the grand staircase of Raynham Hall today.

But Is It True?

The Brown Lady is the subject of arguably the most famous ghost photograph of all time...

... which is fairly unsettling. However, the Brown Lady story does feel a bit like the product of the Victorian fascination with both the occult and sexual moralizing, rather than an accurate account of the Townsend marriage. (The vagueness surrounding the reasons for Lord Townsend's sudden decision to imprison his wife and fake her death, for example.) Still, it's hard to argue with the seriousness and integrity of some of these witnesses. If you can't trust a guy named Colonel Loftus, who can you trust?
White House
The Location

The White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue has been the home of every American president and his family since the John Adams administration in 1800. Homes in the US don't get much more historic, and few are reported to be more crowded with undead souls.

The Legend

According to legend, the first First Lady to take residence in the mansion liked it so much that her spirit remains there today. Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams, can reportedly be seen hanging laundry in the East Room from time to time.
Adams probably doesn't get much chance to be lonely, as Dolley Madison, wife of James Madison, has also been spotted hanging out in spirit form at the White House. Madison, who designed the Rose Garden during her husband's administration, allegedly returned to stop work on the garden's removal years later.

That's far from all of the haunting in this landmark. The Rose Room, also known as the Queen's Bedroom, is said to be the spiritual hot spot in the White House. The ghosts of everyone from President Andrew Jackson to President Abraham Lincoln is said to occupy that bedroom.

Finally, many visitors and residents of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue claim to have seen Abraham Lincoln's ghost walking the grounds. First Ladies Eleanor Roosevelt and Grace Goodhue (wife of Calvin Coolidge) told of spotting Lincoln's ghost in the appropriately-titled Lincoln bedroom. As well, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands claimed that, while spending the night at the White House, she heard Lincoln knocking at her bedroom door. (I'm sure it was perfectly innocent...)

But Is It True?

Most ghost stories seem to indicate that great traumas or intense emotions are what spark a haunting. Ghosts don't want to hang out just ANYWHERE. They occupy those locations where significant events went down. And it's hard to think of a more significant place where more dramatic decisions have been made than at the White House.

Still, with so many people walking through the White House every day, it seems an odd place for ghosts to be mucking about unseen. And a lot of the stories about White House hauntings are patently absurd, such as when Winston Churchill claimed to have been taking a bath in the White House, only to emerge nude and find himself face-to-face with Lincoln's ghost.
Whaley House
The Location

Located in San Diego, California, the Whaley House was built over the site where James Robinson (nicknamed Yankee Jim) was executed in 1852 after a conviction of grand larceny. Four years after the hanging, Thomas Whaley purchased the land and constructed the home for his family. (Hence the name.)

The Legend

Yankee Jim was a relatively infamous character in the area, known for ambushing miners for their recently-obtained gold. Eventually, he and two other men were arrested for stealing a boat, and he was condemned to die. (To give you a sense for the way justice was meted out at the time, two of the jury members were also the owners of the stolen boat.)

On the day of the execution, Yankee Jim addressed the crowd that had gathered while standing in a cart. He said his execution was a miscarriage of justice, and argued that he was a good man who was known for donating to the poor. He was then hanged suddenly in the midst of speaking. In addition, the noose was set too low, allowing Yankee Jim's feet to touch the ground and prolonging his death.

After moving into the home built atop the site of this execution, the Whaleys began hearing strange noises, including the sound of boots stomping around the house. Soon enough, the stories spread that the ghost of Yankee Jim was still wandering the grounds, angry about his overly harsh sentence.

In the 1950s, the county decided to have the home renovated and restored, and the workers began to notice strange things, like doors and windows opening and closing themselves, or strange sounds. Some reported seeing not Yankee Jim but the ghosts of Thomas Whaley and his wife at the top of the staircase. A few refused to continue working on the site. Even television personality Regis Philbin has claimed to have seen the spirits in the home.

But Is It True?

Here's the most compelling evidence to date of the haunting of Whaley House, a photo that appears to show a smoke-like apparition:

Rose Hall House
The Location

Rose Hall House is one of the most famous and lavish homes in Jamaica. It was first constructed in the 1770s in Montego Bay, and was most recently refurbished in the 1960s. It is a popular tourist attraction.

The Legend

In 1820, Haitian-born Annie Palmer married John Palmer of Montego Bay. John owned Rose Hall at this point, and ran it as a plantation, utilizing slave labor. John died soon after returning to Rose Hall with his Haitian bride. According to local legends, Annie was a psychopath who used voodoo to dominate the men of the plantation. She allegedly manipulated the string of new husbands she acquired over the years, as well as the slaves who worked on the plantation, tolerating them for a time, only to murder them when she lost interest.

Annie was said to have a freakishly high sex drive. When she became bored with her three husbands, all who died under strange circumstances, she would make male slaves join her in bed. When Annie grew tired of a slave, she would murder them as well. This ritual repeated itself for years apparently, all right there in Rose Hall House.

It's said that Annie was eventually killed in her bed by one of her victims, possibly a slave during the slave of the 1830s. Annie was buried in a special grave in the woods, but her spirit reportedly remains in the Rose Hall to this day. The site, in addition to being a tourist attraction, has been home to numerous seances and attempts to commune with Annie's spirit. She has come to be known as the "White Witch of Rose Hall."

But Is It True?

Almost certainly not. Aside from a novel apparently inspired by the house from the 1920s, there's nothing in the historical record to suggest even that "Annie Palmer" existed, let alone that she was a voodoo priestess using the house as a homebase for a bloodthirsty rampage. The story seems in many ways concocted out of the most depraved fantasies of the local European residents. In a study of the legend from the Fortean Times in 2007, author Benjamin Radford investigated the "White Witch" legends and concluded that they were entirely fictional. Even the pseudo-scientific paranormal investigations of the location have failed to produce any compelling indications of a supernatural haunting.
The Crescent Hotel
The Location

The Gothic style Crescent Hotel of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, is sometimes called the "Grand Old Lady of the Ozarks," and is often listed as the most haunted place in all of the Ozark Mountains (a location known for its colorful folklore.) The hotel and spa was designed by famed Missouri architect Isaac L. Taylor and built between 1884 and 1886 on the West Mountain in the Ozarks. Eureka Springs had recently become infamous as the home of "healing spring waters," which were believed to have curative properties for all variety of ailments. (Lots of bottled Eureka Spring water was also making its way around the country, adding to the region's notoriety.) Tourism to the area also got a boost when a stop on the newly-built Frisco Railroad was built close by.

Interest in the resort waned by the turn of the century, after it became clear that the springs - though delightful for holiday goers - didn't actually help cure anything. It has been run in the intervening years alternatively as a hotel and health clinic, and is currently open as a spa and resort, along with one of America's historic hotels.

The Legend

Rumors and stories about hauntings at The Crescent started as soon as construction began. It's said that one of the workers - in most accounts, a stonemason named Michael - plunged from the roof to his death, landing in the spot currently occupied by Room 218. Naturally, strange noises have been reported in this room over the years by guests.

Most of the horror stories surrounding The Crescent concern the years it was operated by a charlatan named Norman Baker, who had become famous via a variety of get-rich-quick schemes, including a small fortune made selling calliopes. Baker - who was not a licensed physician - intended to use The Crescent as a homeopathic clinic of sorts, offering a variety of miracle medicines. (Baker had previously touted a "cure for cancer" in his native Iowa before being shut down by the American Medical Association.) Most of Baker's "cures" offered at the Crescent consisted of drinking the local spring water, which was not actually curing people but also was probably not doing them much harm.

Local legends sprung up around the clinic, however, about Baker's cruel and gruesome treatments. Some anecdotes have him scalping patients to search for tumors directly in their brain, or of locking patients away to die in pain so no one would know they had not been cured. Baker was arrested in connection with the scheme in 1940 and did 4 years in prison, abandoning the hospital thereafter. But it's said that the ghosts of his tormented patients still linger there, most famously a cancer patient named Theodora who is accompanied by a ghostly cat that appears on guests beds.

But Is It True?

The Crescent is a popular location for TV shows and documentaries about ghost hunters, and has appeared on Sci-Fi Channel's Ghost Hunters, NBC's Today Show, A&E's Haunted Road Trips and elsewhere. (On the Sci-Fi Channel show, it was suggested that the ghost of famous dancer Irene Castle - who spent her last years in Eureka Springs - was spotted at The Crescent.) It's important to bear in mind, though, that much of The Crescent's business depends on the fascination with its haunting, so it's in everyone's financial best interests to make sure there are an appropriate number of "sightings."

As well, Baker was never charged with torturing or brutalizing patients, merely with defrauding them via the US Mail.
The Bell Farm
(Skip to 03:15 for information on the Bell Witch.)

The Location

In 1800, farmer John Bell and his family moved from North Carolina to Red River, Tennessee (today called Adams, Tennessee). He eventually came to own over 300 acres of property in the area, and became a respected local leader and Elder of the town church.

The Legend

By most accounts, strange things started happening on the Bell family farm around 1817, which have been blamed on an entity known as "The Bell Witch." There are several popular stories. Here are a few of the more intriguing variations:

- John Bell found a strange animal on the property that looked like a half-dog, half-rabbit.
- The Bell children started hearing strange sounds, which at times resembled vermin invading their rooms and gnawing at their beds.
- Faint whispering heard around the house that resembled women softly singing hymns.
- The Bells found a vial of unknown liquid sitting around the house. They tested it out by giving some to the cat, which soon died.

Bell grew ill in 1820, by some accounts owing to the stress and terror of believing a witch was haunting him. (In other accounts, John became sick because the Bell Witch had given him some of the strange liquid that killed the cat.) It was said that, after John's funeral, the Bell Witch could be heard laughing and cackling to herself, and taking credit for the death.

But Is It True?

President Andrew Jackson certainly believed so. During the Battle of New Orleans, in which several of Bell's sons had fought, then-General Jackson became intrigued by stories of the haunting of the Bell's Farm and in 1819 took a trip there to investigate further. Though peculiar things started happening almost immediately upon his arrival at the farm (such as the wagon he was bringing suddenly becoming immobile and refusing to budge), the skeptical Jackson initially denied the rumors. Eventually, however, he too became convinced the Bell Farm was haunted, and is said to have even come up with the name "The Bell Witch."

However, it's hard to tell how much of this report is folklore vs. actual history. Only one primary source still survives about the Bell Witch, an account written by Richard Williams Bell - the second-youngest child of John Bell - in 1846 called "Our Family Trouble." In it, he provides an eyewitness account of the haunting. It was rumored that the ghost had promised to return to Bell's direct descendent in 107 years, which would have been 1935. No reports of Bell Witch sightings were made at that time.

The story has inspired a number of notable pop culture haunted houses and ghost stories. The horror film "An American Haunting" is a largely fictionalized retelling of The Bell Witch story, though in this version, John Bell is raping his daughter and the Bell Witch is actually a manifestation of her anger and grief.

Times Tom Hanks Was Just as Cool as You Hope He
Tom Hanks is not just a man. He's not just an actor. He is, perhaps, one of the actual greatest guys on the planet. Seriously, he has Bill Murray levels of skill at showing up in unexpected places and doing delightful things. Besides playing some of cinema and television’s most enduring characters, nice Tom Hanks stories include ones where he posed with a passed out fan, taped an Emmy to the hood of a Mercedes, and got inducted into the Army Ranger Hall of Fame.

Tom Hanks good deeds also include returning a Fordham University student’s ID via Twitter, gifting the White House press corp with an espresso machine, and befriending an NYC cab driver. Tom Hanks is that good guy we can look to when other celebrities start disappointing us. He’s our rock. He’s good natured, charming, and fairly good at catching random soccer balls with Wilson’s face on them. He’ll jump into a Carly Rae Jepson music video. He’ll perform the perfect poetry slam about Full House. He’ll write “FU” on an autograph at a fan's request. And he’ll still have time to invent a typewriter app and make more movies.

When Bill Murray isn’t around to invade someone’s engagement photos, we’ve got Tom Hanks making a super fan’s day by showing her scrapbook some genuine love. He is the standard for aspiring celebs everywhere, and seems genuinely grateful for all that he has.

Tom Hanks will no doubt continue to fill the annals of history with good deeds and Hanksian antics. Here are some of the best moments so far.

Times Tom Hanks Was Just as Cool as You Hope He'd Be,

That Time He Helped Sell Girl Scout Cookies

Hanks and his son Truman were on their way to a typewriter shop when they spotted Girl Scouts selling their delicious cookies. Hanks bought four boxes and donated $20 on top of that. And then he hung out and took pictures with people who also bought cookies. At first the Los Altos Scout moms didn’t recognize Hanks because he was wearing the grand celebrity disguise of a baseball cap and sunglasses. But his familiar voice eventually got their attention. “I never realized how distinctive his voice is. It was right out of a movie,” an impressed mom said. And of course everything was shared on Twitter for posterity.

When He Takes Pictures of His Wife on the Red Carpet

Hanks doesn’t worry so much about how he’s coming across on the red carpet. He chooses to focus on his wife instead. He takes his own shots of Rita Wilson on his phone according to the Huffington Post.

When He Brought Down the House at Michael Duncan Clark's Memorial

Hanks and his Green Mile co-star were close. Hanks told a story actor’s memorial service that Duncan had once told him. It brought tears to everyone's eyes.

That Time He Found a Fordham University Student ID

On Oct. 6, 2015, Hanks found a student named Lauren’s student ID in a park. He took to Twitter to let her know he had it and his office would return it to her. That same day, Lauren’s friend Hannah recognized her friend and responded to Hanks.

Lauren didn’t have a Twitter account and found out via her professor that Hanks was looking for her. The lost ID landed her on Good Morning America. She explained to GMA that she lost it when she was on a run and after she pulled out her phone to take a selfie. Hanks eventually mailed the ID back with a note attached.

When He Took a Selfie with Steve Martin Onstage at the Governor Awards

Martin was accepting an honorary Oscar from Hanks when the latter thought it would be a good time to grab a selfie. Definitely captures the moment for him and everyone else.

When He Was Made an Honorary Member of the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame

The Army inducted Hanks into the Ranger Hall of Fame in 2006 for his accurate portrayal of a World War II army ranger in Saving Private Ryan. Unfortunately, Hanks was unable to attend the ceremony according to reports.

When He Reenacted All of His Movies in Six Minutes
Along with James Corden, Hanks gave fans a treat when the pair hit the highlights of Hanks’s biggest roles. Best part: nailing the buddy song from Big
The Way He Signs Autographs

We really hope this one is true. He (may have) signed this fan’s autograph with a Buzz diss. It does seem like a very Hanksian thing to do.

The Time He Taped an Emmy to the Hood of a Car

In order to turn his limo into a Rolls Royce that would take him and wife Rita Wilson to the 64th Annual Emmy Awards, Hanks taped (using packing tape) his Emmy for producing Game Change to the hood of a Lincoln town car. The Emmy was Hank’s fifth. He then reportedly tweeted, “How I'm getting around these days! Hanx.”

That Time He Posed with “Drunk” Fan

After meeting a random fan in a restaurant, Hanks and the fan posed for some pretty funny pics, at the fans' request. The fan pretended to be passed out drunk in a North Dakota diner while Hanks made fun of him. When one of the photos surfaced, it instantly went viral. The other shots reveal that the two were having some fun.

In 2012, reddit user groucho29 posted a link to the pictures, saying, “my friend met Tom Hanks, stole his glasses and pretended to be wasted.”

The Eeriest Coincidences Throughout History
Many coincidences are just that and nothing more. This is true almost across the board, and while the coincidence at hand might be amusing, it isn't significant in anyway and certainly not the portent of a curse. However, there are some creepy coincidences out there that are just plain weird - simultaneous or predicative events that seem far too similar to be the product of mere chance. Is it just happenstance, or is there something more at play?

This list details such eerie coincidences and some will seriously freak you out.

The Eeriest Coincidences Throughout History,

The Lincoln and Kennedy's Assasinations
There have only been four United States presidents to be assassinated while in office, the first being Abraham Lincoln, and the last John F. Kennedy. The similarities surrounding the men both in life and in death are rather surprising. Focusing on the assassinations alone, the coincidences are uncanny. Writes Valerie Klein of History News Network:

"Both Presidents were shot in the back of the head, on the Friday before a major holiday, while seated beside their wives, neither of whom were injured.

"Both were in the presence of another couple, and in each case that man was also wounded by the assassin.

"After both assassinations there were loud and insistent claims that the fatal shot must have come from a different direction...

"Both were succeeded by vice-presidents named Johnson: Andrew born in 1808 and Lyndon in 1908, both of whom had 13 letters in their names and two daughters.

"Both assassins have fifteen letters in their names.

"Booth shot Lincoln in a theatre and fled to a warehouse. Oswald shot Kennedy from a warehouse and fled to a theatre.

"Both assassins were in their turn assassinated by shooters who used a Colt revolver and fired only one, fatal shot."

Twins Killed by the Same Taxi with Almost Too Many Similarities
This incident occurred in 1975 in Bermuda. One of the twins died when a taxi cab struck his moped scooter. One year later, the other twin, riding the exact same scooter, was struck and killed by the exact same taxi, driven by the exact same driver, who was driving the exact same passenger as in the death of the first twin.

The odds of this happening might seem astronomical, leading you to believe the story was made up, but apparently this really happened.
Tamerlane's Prescient Words
Military leader Tamerlane's body was exhumed in 1941 by a Soviet scientist. Inside his tomb, a message read, "When I rise from the dead, the world shall tremble," and, "Whomsoever opens my tomb shall unleash an invader more terrible than I."

Two days later, despite having signed the German-Soviet non-aggression pact, Adolf Hitler and his Nazi troops invaded the Soviet Union.

Author Predicts Titanic Sinking
Morgan Robertson published his novella Futility, or the Wreck of the Titan in 1898. In it, a massive commercial cruise liner named Titan collides with an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean, causing the ship to sink. 14 years later, nearly the exact same thing happened in real life with the Titanic disaster. Not only were the ships' names similar, Robertson's boat was nearly identical to the the Titanic. AP writer Michelle McQuigge notes:

"The ships are approximately the same size, with the Titanic being only 25 metres longer than the Titan's 243. Both were capable of maximum speeds over 20 knots, and both carried only the bare legal minimum number of lifeboats for the thousands of passengers on board...

"Both vessels were hailed as unsinkable, and both proved all too vulnerable after striking icebergs in mid-April."

Bruce Lee Predicted His Son's Death
Never mind the coincidence that both Bruce Lee and his son, Brandon, died while filming movies, there's an even freakier coincidence surrounding the deaths of father and son. Bruce's last film, which was incomplete at the time of his passing, is called Game of Death. In it, Bruce plays a character who, while filming a movie, is shot by a prop gun loaded with real bullets.

In 1993, while filming The Crow, Brandon was killed in a manner almost exactly mirroring the scene in Game of Death - a gun was accidentally loaded with a dummy cartridge still equipped with a projectile and a primer, and thus the round behaved like a regular bullet, killing Brandon, who was struck in the abdomen.
The Miraculous Exploding Church Incident
A church exploded in the small Nebraska town of Beatrice on March 1, 1950, at around 7:25 pm. As choir practice always began around 7:15 pm, all 15 choir members perished in the blast, right?

Nope. No one died. No one even incurred any injuries. How? All 15 members were running late for their own personal reasons. They were nowhere near the church when it exploded. What could have been an utter tragedy for Beatrice ended up being relatively fine, save for the loss of the town church.
Edgar Allan Poe's Macabre Tale Comes True
Edgar Allan Poe's only novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, published in 1838, features a scene in which the crew of a ship, stranded in the ocean and starving, draws straws to see who will be sacrificed for the others' bellies. The loser of the draw is one Richard Parker.

46 years later, in 1884, a few crew members aboard the ship Mignonette escaped a deadly storm just before their boat sank. Stranded without food, the men decided to sacrifice a 17-year-old crew member after the boy attempted to drink saltwater to quench his thirst, causing his health to rapidly decline. They could not wait for him die and risk his body becoming infected in the process of death, so the boy was stabbed to death and devoured.

The boy's name? Richard Parker.
Separated Identical Twins Live Nearly Identical Lives
Two identical twin boys were separated at three-weeks-old and adopted to separate families in Ohio in 1940. 39 years later, in 1979, the brothers were reunited. They'd both been named James by their adoptive parents and they both went by Jim. Both became law enforcement agents as adults. Both married women named Linda, divorced, and then remarried women named Betty. Both had dogs named Toy at different times in their lives. And both had sons named James Allan.

Coincidence, a strong argument for nature over nurture, or unconscious psychic communication?
Man Survives Atomic Blasts at Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Tsutomu Yamaguchi happened to be on a business trip to Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, the day US bombers dropped an atomic bomb on the city. He suffered severe burns, but was otherwise okay. He returned to his home in Nagasaki, where the US dropped a second atomic bomb just days later, and managed to survive that attack as well.
Twins Die on the Same Day, in the Same Manner
In early 2002, a pair of 70-year-old twins died on the dame day in Raahe, Finland. Not so strange, right? Wrong. The men both were struck and killed by trucks while riding their bicycles on the exact same stretch of road, about a mile apart from each other, within a span of two hours.

Police did not suspect premeditated suicide, as the twin to die last had no knowledge of his brother's death before setting out on his bike. Their near-simultaneous and eerily mirrored deaths were simply a freak accident.

15 Celebrities Whose Family Members Were Murdered
List of Celebrities Whose Family Members Were Murdered, loosely ranked by fame and popularity. Thousands of people are murdered every year in the United States. Several celebrities have had family members that have been victims of murder. Some famous people had family members who were killed while they were children and others had family members killed when they were successful adults.

Who is the most famous person who had a family member murdered? Charlize Theron tops our list. The “Young Adult” star's mother shot her father in self-defense in 1991.
